Lighthouse Moments

Today in World Travelers, students will be learning about Canada. We are grateful to the Armstrong family for sharing their time and knowledge with our students as they help bring this learning to life.

Experiences like World Travelers spark students’ curiosity about the world and help build cultural awareness. Learning directly from families in our community supports students’ growth as they develop appreciation and respect for different cultures and perspectives.

Thank you to Ms. Musialowski (PTO), Ms. Monge, and Ms. Winitz for continuing to support and help coordinate this meaningful learning opportunity for our students.

Thank you!

A huge thank you to the PTO’s Teacher and Staff Appreciation Committee, led by Ms. McClayton, Ms. Winters, and Ms. Hamburger, for celebrating and recognizing our teachers and staff through the Winter Olympics theme during Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. The staff was incredibly grateful for the thoughtfulness and care that went into each day of the celebration last week. It also created meaningful opportunities for staff to connect with one another, which was truly appreciated. It was truly a wonderful boost for our community. Thank you!

Math Night

Join us for a fun-filled family evening, Wednesday, March 18th 6pm-6:45pm to explore math through hands-on activities and games! Experience engaging stations designed to make math exciting and joyful for learners of all ages. Come play, problem-solve, and discover just how fun math can be — together!

Don’t miss this special opportunity to share the joy of math with your child. All HW students and their siblings are welcome but must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Evacuation Drill

We will be holding an evacuation drill on Thursday, March 19 at 9:00 a.m. An evacuation drill follows procedures similar to a fire drill, during which all individuals safely exit the building.

MTSS: Tiered support for all learners (Stephanie Larenas, MTSS Coordinator)- (Virtual Zoom Event)

April 8, 2026 9:30 A.M.

Join MTSS Coordinator, Stephanie Larenas, for an informational session in how we support all of our students. Our MTSS practices serve as the foundation of understanding across the district as we provide continued support for students. This three-tiered model ensures consistent teaching and learning for all students, support for students who already understand, and supports for those students who may need additional review. Come learn more about how we gauge student learning and progress, how we respond to student understanding, how we differentiate the need for in-class instruction and intervention support, and how we determine what student progress looks like.

Safety Reminder from the Village of Winnetka

The Village of Winnetka regulates the use of e-bikes, e-scooters, e-dirt bikes, and other motor-driven vehicles with the goal of sidewalk and roadway safety for all residents. These regulations apply to all village-owned or village-maintained property. Violations may result in a fine of $100 for both the operator and the parent/legal guardian (if applicable).

Please remember:

  • Any person operating a device on a public road or public sidewalk must follow the rules of the road, including traveling below the posted speed limit.

  • It is illegal to operate a vehicle with more passengers than the number it is designed/equipped for.

  • It is illegal to modify a device from its original design to change its speed, method of propulsion or braking, or to remove pedals, chains, or add a throttle.

  • All individuals riding e-bikes must wear a helmet at all times.

  • The person operating the device must be able to keep both hands on the handlebars/steering device at all times.

If you have questions about the classification of a device, please call the Winnetka Police Department at 847-501-6034.

Access to Playground on Southside in the Mornings

We recognize that the change to the south side entrance may require an adjustment for some families, and we appreciate your patience as we work through this transition. Until we are able to install an additional gate, a staff member will be stationed at Door 14 from 8:20–8:30 a.m. to allow students to enter the playground from the south side of the building.

Thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we work to support a smooth and safe arrival for students.

Acceleration Request Window

Illinois’ Accelerated Placement Act requires public school districts to maintain policies that allow for both single-subject and whole-grade acceleration when appropriate.

To learn more about how District 36 implements its acceleration policy, families may:

  • View this overview infographic

  • Visit the district’s Early Entrance and Acceleration webpage

  • Watch the January 2025 Winnetka Parent Institute session on acceleration

Families who are considering whether acceleration may be an appropriate option for their child are encouraged to begin with this parent reflection worksheet, which is designed to support thoughtful decision-making prior to submitting a request.

The request form for accelerated programming for the 2026–27 school year is now open. The request window runs from March 2 through March 20.

Questions about the acceleration policy may be directed to Dr. Becky Mathison, Assistant Superintendent of Innovation, Teaching and Learning, at beckymathison@winnetka36.org.
