"The Advice Trap" Book Study "The Advice Trap" Book Study

January 17: 1:00pm-2:30pm

It's not to late to participate! We are happy for any coach or specialist to join the book study. You can also listen to the audiobook on the IMESD Sora app. An email with the Zoom link will be shared out the week of the meeting for those that have registered.

To Read before January 17: the Introduction and Section 1 (pages 1-58)

Discussion Questions for Section 1:

  • Think about any conversation where there is a “helper” and a “helpee.” When you are the helper, how often do you move right to offering up advice? When you do this, how often does the helpee actually take and use your advice?
  • As a coach, who is “Present You?” Who is “Future You?” Take some time to think about the gap between the Yous. What might you do to close that gap? What are some immediate actions you might consider taking?
  • When I am coaching, do I stay curious? How does that look both internally and externally? Jot some ideas down.
  • Do you know how to tame your own Advice Monster? Do you recognize when you are doing it? What are some of your “go-to moves?”
  • How do you respond when people ASK for your advice in a coaching setting saying things like, “Just tell me what to do and I’ll do it.” Are there ways to avoid this scenario?
