Robert Down Principal's Update
August 27, 2026
Principal's Message
Dear Robert H. Down School Community,
It was wonderful to see many of you at our Social Emotional Learning Parent Workshop on Tuesday, August 25 with our incredible Counselor, Sonda Frudden! Thank you so much for taking the time to attend! For a brief overview of our Social Emotional Learning program at Robert Down, please click here.
Be sure to mark your calendars on Saturday, September 12 from 9-12, and participate in Walk with PRIDE to raise funds for your child’s classroom! You are welcome to walk, run, scooter, skate, or bike (please no e-bikes!) along the Rec Trail to help them earn charms. Reach out to friends and family to sponsor your child in their efforts! Every dollar raised goes directly to each child’s classroom.
I have truly enjoyed walking through classrooms and seeing all the many ways our teachers are engaging our students in learning in fun, innovative ways! If you have a second grader, be sure to ask about the Mystery Suitcase. If you have a fifth grader, they may have participated in a paper airplane challenge recently!
Apologies!
Last week, I highlighted our students and community members who represented Robert Down for our presentation at our District Board meeting highlighting our Garden as well as our new Art Mural. I inadvertently omitted 5th grade student, Erin Li, who did a beautiful job highlighting what she enjoyed about participating in the creation of our Art Mural! I wanted to be sure I included and acknowledged her presence and contribution. Thank you, Erin!
Goodbye at the Gate!
Many thanks to those of you who have been transitioning to say good-bye at the gate! I have seen so much growth in independence in just a few short weeks! We appreciate your full support as we continue to work toward having every student enter school independently so they can quickly get into their morning classroom routines. Thank you for your continued help and support with this!
Building Our "Culture of We" – Get Involved!
At Robert Down Elementary, we believe in the power of community. There are so many ways to get involved and support our students:
Are you interested in volunteering to help some of our classes with Science prep (which could possibly be done from home), set up, and/or clean up? If so, please let us know here!
September 15-October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month! Would you like to share about your family’s Hispanic heritage through a bulletin board display, presentation, or slide deck? If so, please sign up here!
Sign up here to join the Robert Down PTA! Your involvement makes a real difference.
Safety Update
Successful Evacuation Drill: Last Friday, August 21, we had our first Safety Drill on Evacuation. All students and staff were able to evacuate from their classrooms to their designated area on the field and account for every student and staff member in about 8 minutes!
Our District follows the Big Five protocols for emergencies. Linked here is our procedure for Evacuation.
Community Events
Come watch 3rd and 4th graders Elowen Dow, Lennox Andrade, Ever Karai, Tenar Karai, and Emmi Leyva Nguyen in this year’s Fall PacRep production of The Little Mermaid at the Outdoor Forest Theater in Carmel! It is playing on Thursdays-Sundays through September 20! If interested in this fun family event, more information can be found here!
One of our Robert Down families leads Trash Turtles and they are partnering with some other local organizations to do a Coastal Clean Up Day on Saturday, September 19 in Sand City. For more information, see the flyer here.

Calling 5th Grade Students for FLL!
What is FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL)?
FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) is a fun, hands-on robotics program for students that combines science, technology, engineering, coding, teamwork, and creativity. Students work in teams to design, build, and program LEGO robots to complete missions on a themed competition table. Along the way, they also research and solve a real-world problem connected to the season’s challenge.
FLL is designed to help students learn important STEM skills while building confidence, communication, leadership, and teamwork. Teams are guided by coaches and mentors, but students are encouraged to do the problem-solving, designing, and programming themselves.
In FIRST LEGO League students:
Build and program LEGO robots using motors and sensors
Learn coding and engineering concepts
Work together as a team to solve challenges
Research real-world problems and present innovative solutions
Practice public speaking and presentation skills
Develop creativity, persistence, and critical thinking
Competitions Include:
Robot Game: Robots complete missions on a challenge field
Innovation Project: Teams research and present a solution to a real-world issue
Robot Design: Students explain their engineering and programming process
Core Values: Teams demonstrate teamwork, inclusion, and gracious professionalism
FIRST LEGO League is ideal for students who enjoy building, coding, problem-solving, and working collaboratively in a supportive and exciting environment.
