6th Grade Visits Camp Howell
Sixth Grade Camp was an amazing day filled with teamwork, laughter, and new friendships! Students had the opportunity to build relationships and form bonds with classmates while working together, encouraging one another, and stepping outside of their comfort zones. From ziplining through the trees and climbing the rock tower to challenging themselves on the ropes course, students faced their fears and discovered that they could do things they never thought they could. We also enjoyed playing fun games, sharing lots of laughs, and singing songs together on the bus. The beautiful fall weather made the day even more special as we spent time outside enjoying nature and making memories that our sixth graders will carry with them throughout the school year. It was truly a wonderful day of teamwork, courage, friendship, and fun!
The Second Step Social & Emotional Learning Curriculum K-8
As you know, in September we kicked of the Second Step Curriculum in all K-8 classes to further strengthen our social and emotional learning. Second Step offers weekly, age-appropriate virtual lessons for students to help them with a variety of social and emotional skills. These weekly lessons build on and support all of the great work we're doing at Ike to support our students. Combined with our schoolwide restorative practices and consistent PBIS expectations, we are creating a firm Tier 1 foundation for supporting all of our students' social, emotional, and behavioral development.
This week, each grade-level will begin a new unit. Please view the grade-level home links below to learn more about what your child is learning and how to support them at home during the second unit of Second Step.

Parking Lot Reminders
- The North lot is NOT a drop-off/pick-up zone. It is for parking only. We MUST keep the loop open for busses and emergency vehicles. This rule applies to everyone, so please be cooperative and follow it.
- The large, central lot has two lanes: a drop-off/ pick-up lane on the outside of the loop and a driving lane on the inside.
- Please note: Drivers MAY NOT get out of their cars while in the outside drop-off/pick-up lane. Students must exit to the outside of the loop, and drivers must not exit the car to walk students up or pick them up. If you have younger children who need to be walked up or picked up at the door, you MUST park your car in one of the lots or on the street.
- Smoking and pets are not permitted on school grounds. Please leave your pets at home for the safety and comfort of all of our students and families.
Restorative Practices for Parents
Restorative Practices is a relational approach to building community. In this three hour training, you will learn some of the theory behind Restorative Practices as well as some practical strategies to add to your parent toolbox that are already being used with your students in our schools. Whether you have a kindergartener or a senior, this training is for you!
The Restorative Practices training team consists of a classroom teacher (Luke Woods), a retired public safety officer (Lisa Pettyes), and a social worker (Tina Radulski). The team has been training staff in RP for over 5 years and will bring several different perspectives to the training.
There are two difrerent slots to sign up - one if you require child care and one if you will not. Please make sure to use the right category.
Training will be on November 4th from 5-8:30 PM in the Richards Middle School Media Center.
Celebrating Red Ribbon Week All Month Long
Red Ribbon Week: October 23–31
2026 Theme: “Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free.™”
Red Ribbon Week is a time for schools and families to encourage healthy, positive choices. At Mark Twain, our celebration will begin Monday, September 28 and continue throughout October, leading up to a week of activities from October 26–30.
Wear Red Mondays: Students are encouraged to wear red on September 28 and October 5, 12, 19, and 26. We’ll also share Red Ribbon announcements on those days.
Learning and activities: In HEART classes, students will discuss healthy habits and positive choices and make a pledge to live drug free. Students in grades 1–6 will complete the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs unit during October. All students and staff will receive red awareness bracelets to wear during Red Ribbon Week. Each school day from October 26–30, five students wearing their bracelets will be randomly selected to win a prize—25 winners in all!
Spirit days, October 26–30. -SEE BELOW...
Poster contest: Students in grades 4–6 may choose to create a Red Ribbon poster. HEART teachers will collect entries, and winning posters from each grade will be displayed in the district during November.
Thank you for helping our Comets make healthy choices and celebrate Red Ribbon Week!

6th Grade Vaping Presentation
We are excited to have CARE support our school’s Red Ribbon Month activities by providing their “Dispelling Myths and Revealing Facts on Vaping” presentation to each of our 6th grade classes.
The presentations will take place during HEART classes during the month of October and will complement our Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Unit. This educational opportunity is designed to provide students with accurate, age-appropriate information to help them make informed and healthy choices.
Topics addressed during the presentation will include:
The ingredients and substances found in vaping products
Understanding nicotine and the risks of addiction
The potential health and social impacts of vaping
We appreciate CARE’s partnership in supporting our students through education and prevention and look forward to this meaningful learning opportunity during Red Ribbon Month. If you would prefer that your child not attend this presentation, please contact your child's teacher.
Halloween Around Twain
- Parade: A short "Halloween Parade" will take place beginning at 10:00AM on Friday, October 30th. Weather permitting, we will parade out the main doors and around the building. Our Y5s & kindergarten students will lead the parade around each classroom and then out around the building. All are welcome to come and watch our costume parade outdoors!
- Classroom Activities: Classrooms/grade levels will be planning for Halloween activities and celebrations individually, either before or after the parade. If teachers request parent volunteers to help facilitate the classroom activities, all volunteers will have to submit a Background Check.
- Costumes: Students may come to school in costume on Friday, October 30th. They can stay in costume for the duration of the day. Costumes need to be school appropriate and cannot depict violence or excess blood/gore. No fake weapons are allowed in school (i.e. toy guns, swords, blades, etc). Costume masks can be worn for the parade, but not throughout the day. For costumes that have short skirts/shorts, leggings or pants need to be worn underneath.

Health Guidance for Going to School
We want to partner with our families to make our school a safe, healthy and welcoming environment for your students.
Make sure to send your child to school if they are generally healthy and able to participate in their usual day-to-day activities. Avoid keeping children at home unless they are too sick to participate.
We have put together this helpful chart of when to keep your child home and when they can return to school for common illnesses
