Liaison List
What should I be doing now?
- Identify students who are experiencing homelessness and assist with enrollment, even if documents or medical records are not available
- Follow up with students who were MV last year on their current nighttime residence (MV status is re-determined each year at the start of school)
- Assist with School Selection
- School of origin - arrange transportation by discussing options with resident district Liaison (sample agreement 1)
- Create a plan to train staff on MV awareness and student rights (start with the video in this smore)
- Hang posters / flyers within school buildings and the community - Know Your Rights flyers in multiple languages
- Are you also the Foster Care Liaison? FC is different than MV - read the MDE Best Practices Resource Guide to get started
Younger Siblings & School of Origin
Common Start of the Year Scenario
Thomas lost his housing last year while attending Sodor Elementary School and moved into a shelter outside of the district. His circumstances did not change over the summer and he would like to return to Sodor Elementary. He also has a sister, Daisy, who will be starting Kindergarten and would like to attend Sodor as well. Even though both students are McKinney-Vento eligible, MV enrollment only covers school of origin and school of residence. In this scenario, Sodor is not the school of origin for Daisy and she would need to enroll in her resident district or local charter school. (Note: if SOC slots are available Daisy may be able to enroll at Sodor under SOC)
Important
- Allegan - Sylvia's Place now has outreach office hours in Pullman at People Helping People, 10am - 2pm
- Increased Military Deployments - if a student is staying with a relative or caretaker due to their parent or guardian's deployment they are not considered MV but do have the right to enroll where they are now staying due to the Military Interstate Children's Compact - these students should be coded 9130 in your SIS (military connected child)
- Rx Kids - residents of 49507 in Grand Rapids are now able to register for Rx Kids if they had a baby July 1st or afterward - program provides $1,500 for expectant parents and then $500/month for up to 6 months after birth to support financial security
