Sunnyvale ISD Welcomes Susan Heston as Director of Special Education
Sunnyvale ISD is proud to welcome Susan Heston back to the district as the Director of Special Education. Most recently serving as Coordinator of Special Education for Royse City ISD, she led district-wide efforts in evaluation processes, special education staff development, and special education compliance. Heston said she is committed to empowering educators through meaningful professional learning and collaboration.
Her previous tenure in Sunnyvale ISD as Lead Speech Language Pathologist provided her with firsthand knowledge of the district’s and the community’s expectations. She said her time away in a leadership role provided valuable experience she is eager to bring back.
“After spending almost 14 years serving this community, returning now as the Director is an incredibly exciting full-circle moment,” Heston said. “Stepping away to serve in an administrative leadership role in another district over the last two years provided me with a vast amount of new, high-level experiences that I am excited to bring back home.”
As she begins her new role, Heston said her top priority is building strong, transparent relationships through a visible campus presence and open communication.
“My primary goal for my first year is to spend significant time on our campuses in order to build transparent, strong relationships with educators, administrators and families,” she said. “When communicating with parents, I value absolute transparency and active listening. With teachers, I strive for clarity, collaboration and being an approachable, solution-oriented partner. When it comes to our students, my focus is always on recognizing and celebrating their unique strengths.”
Creating a positive culture across campuses is another priority. Heston said consistent visibility and connection help foster a supportive environment for students, staff and families.
“I am deeply honored to be back serving our Raiders,” she said. “My promise to you is to lead with a servant-leadership mindset and an unshakeable commitment to our kids and educators. Together, we will help every Raider rise.”
