Cahokia Mounds Experiential Learning Class Trip

Chelsea Center Collaborative Learning Team Teacher Grants Program

The Chelsea Detrick Experiential Learning Center is excited to announce a new initiative allowing us to expand the reach of experiential learning into more general education classrooms. The Chelsea Center Collaborative Learning Team (CLT) Grants program encourages faculty CLT groups to dream together to enrich their course outlines with experiential learning opportunities. We are able to grant the funds for those student experiences and provide support to teachers through the planning, execution, and reflection phases of the experience.

Last week, students in Dr. Jessica Pursell's and Mr. Josh Lupaell’s AP U.S. History sections took their learning beyond the classroom with an experiential trip to Cahokia Mounds. Students explored the history of Native Americans in our region by holding artifacts, playing traditional games and walking Monks Mound to take in the perspective of the culture. Click here to view a video on Instagram of students reflecting and demonstrating the inspiring spark that comes with authentic experiential learning. A huge thank you to the donors making the Chelsea Center CLT Grants program possible at WGHS, and to Dr. Pursell and Mr. Luparell for taking the brave leap into new pedagogy to bring history to life for our students!

Hospitality Industry Business Networking Opportunity

The featured experience next week on 9/11 during Academic Networking is a talk and networking opportunity with top executives at the Lodging, Hospitality, and Management group (LHM). LHM manages lots of local hotels, restaurants, and event spaces including hotels, restaurants, and attractions at Union Station, Westport Plaza, and Ballpark Village. This opportunity is available to all students, and great for those interested in business, marketing, hospitality, and management. Interested students should sign up in GivePulse, and those who attend this networking talk will be eligible to join us later in September on a trip to experience the daily work aspects of LHM business professionals and sites they manage–including the fun attractions of Union Station!

Reminder: We can help students who are pursuing their A+ hours find connections to service learning that include the mentorship or job shadowing components the A+ program requires. Have your students stop by to talk with us, or independently explore their GivePulse account opportunity listings at wgsd.givepulse.com.
