First Grade Field Trip

First grade students went on a field trip to the Abingdon Fire Department. They learned about fire safety tips for their homes, got to tour the fire station, watched a demonstration from one of the fire fighters, learned about what all is stored on the fire trucks, and even got to sit on an antique fire truck. We also got to see the firefighters in action as they got geared up for an emergency call. One of our Social Studies SOLs is to learn about community helpers and how they make positive impacts on our community, so this was a great way to bring that standard to life!

Goodbye to Our Fifth Graders

Fifth Grade Awards were held on Thursday, May 23. We would like to take this opportunity to wish our outgoing fifth graders the best in all they do. Shoot for the stars and always do your best. Be respectful, responsible, and ready to learn. Be a light!

Awards Day

Awards day was held on Friday, May 24 for Kindergarten through fourth grade. Many students received recognition for attendance, citizenship, music, art, physical education, writing, math, reading, science, and social studies. In addition, students who participated in run club and ran a 5K were recognized as were members of the GES Safety Patrol.

Field Day

GES students had a blast on field day. Many activities kept them busy including team competition relays, water balloon toss, dunking teachers in the dunk tank, inflatables, a water slide, and Happy Ice to keep them cool.

Kiss a Pig

As a reward for putting forth their best effort on the SOL tests, students got to watch Mr. Colston and many of their teachers kiss a pig. Earlier in the month, students voted on the incentive that would help them stay focused for their tests. The winning result was "kiss a pig." Students laughed and cheered when the visiting pig, Snoop Hog, came into the gymnasium and the teachers lined up to kiss him. One of the stipulations was to "kiss a pig while wearing red lipstick." So, Mr. Colston and the third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers put on red lipstick and each gave Snoop Hog a kiss in the snout or forehead.
