Read All About It! Read All About It!

What a year it has been in the Hedgcoxe library! Here are the highlights:

  • We've circulated 13,268 print resources and over 6000 digital resources (databases and e-books) for our students and staff!
  • All students received age-appropriate library instruction on literacy skills, digital citizenship skills, and information literacy skills.
  • We had a school-wide author visit with illustrator and author Adam Rex, and our 4th graders enjoyed a Bookelicious virtual visit featuring prolific author Katherine Applegate. Thank you to our amazing PTA for making those author visits possible for our students!
  • While our most-circulated books are still the perennial favorites from the Dog Man and Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, our students also enjoyed rich picture books, a variety of stand-alone and series chapter books, and many kinds of non-fiction books.
  • Our year in the library was also sprinkled with fun activities like two PTA-sponsored book fairs, seasonal reading challenges, a bookmark-creation contest, and STEAM building stations. There's something for everyone in our library!

It's time now to bring all of our books "home" for the summer so I can get our shelves ready for a new school year. All books were due on Friday, May 8th. If your student still has a library book that cannot be located, then please contact me at karen.berry@pisd.edu for payment information. (Lost or damaged books must be paid for; we can no longer accept replacement books in lieu of payment.) Students whose accounts are not reconciled before summer will not be able to check out books when school resumes in August. This includes 5th graders who are moving on to middle school! The good news is that if you pay for a book and then find it over the summer, a full refund can be arranged if the book is returned in good condition within the first two weeks of the next school year. If you have any questions about lost library books, please email Mrs. Berry at karen.berry@pisd.edu.

SUMMER READING: Avoid the Summer Slide with these Amazing Ideas & Incentives! SUMMER READING: Avoid the Summer Slide with these Amazing Ideas & Incentives!

"Summer Slide" is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. The good news is that preventing the summer slide is as easy as reading for 20 minutes a day over the summer. The best news is that children who read for 20 minutes a day over the summer can make a "summer leap" and make reading gains!

Check out the reading programs below for some fun ideas and free incentives to keep your students reading ALL SUMMER LONG! Click each link for details.

PLANO ISD Summer Reading Challenge- Click to read about the first annual Plano ISD Beanstack challenge! The top three elementary schools and the top three middle schools will each receive funds to purchase new books for their library. Additional recognition and rewards will also be provided for the top school at each level, along with opportunities to earn prizes from Beanstack for overall participation. So encourage your Hound to READ and then to LOG THEIR READING MINUTES in Beanstack! The Beanstack app is available on every student's Webdesk. See below for Beanstack resources and how-to videos:

PISD elementary students can access Sora e-books/audiobooks and Tumblebooks through their PISD Webdesks all summer long! Students can earn digital badges in Sora for various reading challenges. If a student does not have the Sora app on their webdesk, it is because their parents opted out of e-book access in Skyward at the beginning of last school year.

Library Volunteers Library Volunteers

I would be remiss not to mention our amazing Library Volunteers! About 35 parents, grandparents, and community members came to the library every week or every other week all year long. They assisted students in finding and checking out books, and they shelved literally THOUSANDS of books throughout the school year. Our library volunteers are THE BEST, and they make all the difference in how our students experience their time in the library.

If you would like to be a library volunteer next school year, then look for the QR codes that will be posted around the building during Meet the Teacher to express your interest in and availability for volunteering. Mrs. Berry will then reach out to you about joining this amazing team.

Have a wonderful summer, and I look forward to seeing your students in the library again next school year. Happy Reading!
