District 97 Launches Middle School ELA Resource Pilot
District 97 is committed to continuing to elevate our students' experiences in reading and writing in grades 6-8.
One of our district’s priorities is to ensure teachers have access to high-quality, evidence-based resources aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards for English Language Arts.
This year, Brooks and Julian Middle Schools will pilot two resources for Tier 1 instruction that were carefully evaluated and selected by middle school English language arts (ELA) teachers during the 2025–2026 school year. We look forward to implementing these resources in grades 6–8 to provide students with engaging, high-quality opportunities to develop their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills while identifying the resource that best supports the needs of our students and teachers.
ELA Resource Pilot Timeline:
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Into Literature: October 26, 2026 - January 15, 2027
Imagine Learning StudySync: January 19, 2027 - March 25, 2027
Your voice is important as we engage in the pilot process. Families will be invited to provide feedback about their experience with each resource. This feedback, along with input from students and staff, will help inform the district-wide adoption of a new comprehensive 6–8 ELA Tier 1 resource for the 2027–2028 school year.
Thank you for your partnership and support as we continue to provide meaningful opportunities for all students to grow as readers and writers!
Please contact {April Moriarty | Nick Filopowski} if you have any questions regarding the upcoming pilot.

PICTURE DAY IS COMING - 10/28/26
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month!
From September 15 to October 15, our school community is excited to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month! This special month honors the rich history, cultures, and incredible contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.
Over the next four weeks, our students will explore these vibrant traditions and histories through various classroom activities. We look forward to learning, reflecting, and celebrating the diversity that makes our school so wonderful! Keep an eye out for updates on how we are celebrating throughout the month.
Recommended Middle School Books
Looking for a great book to read with your middle schooler this month? These engaging stories explore Latine cultures, family dynamics, and identity through themes that perfectly mirror the middle school experience:
- "Merci Suárez Changes Gears" by Meg Medina – A humorous and heartwarming coming-of-age story about a girl navigating friendships and her large, multigenerational family.
- "Invisible: A Graphic Novel" by Christina Diaz Gonzalez – A brilliant, fast-paced graphic novel about five very different students who discover each other's true stories during community service.
- "Frizzy: A Graphic Novel" by Claribel A. Ortega – A beautiful story about family expectations, self-esteem, and a young girl learning to embrace and celebrate her natural hair.
- "Efrén Divided" by Ernesto Cisneros – A deeply moving and relevant novel about a 12-year-old boy finding the strength to care for his family and community.
Ways to Celebrate at Home
Here are a few quick, meaningful ways you can connect with Hispanic heritage outside of the classroom:
- Analyze an Infographic: Find a Hispanic Heritage Month infographic online to look at together. Talk about the history of the month and the rich differences between terms like "Hispanic" and "Latino."
- Take a Virtual Tour: Travel without leaving the living room! Families can take a free virtual field trip to incredible cultural hubs like the Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City.
- Listen to New Sounds: Swap out your usual playlist during a car ride or dinner. Introduce your child to different vibrant genres like salsa, cumbia, or Latin jazz.
- Explore Family History: Use the themes of these books to spark conversations about your own family's names, roots, traditions, and stories.

E-Ride Guidelines (min age 15yrs old) and Street Safety Reminders for Families
Now that school is back in session, students are back on the streets and sidewalks traveling to and from school. While e-bikes, e-scooters and other e-rides have become increasingly popular, the Village of Oak Park Public Health Department has a few reminders, guidelines and tips for middle school parents to encourage safe travel.
- The minimum legal age for e-rides: 15 years old. This means the vast majority of middle schoolers cannot legally operate an e-ride in Oak Park. For more on e-rides, the law, and safety, visit the Village's e-ride webpage.
- Alternatives to dropping off students via car if they are not eligible to take the bus:
- Walk with friends and classmates: Choose a common meeting spot or create a route where you can pick up friends along the way. While crossing guards are stationed throughout the community, make sure students also know to be alert and aware of cars, bikes and other vehicles any time they cross any street.
- Bike to school:
- Protect your head! Get a well-fitted helmet for all bike riders in the family and encourage consistent wear every time, every ride.
- Choose a route: check out Neighborhood Greenways and bike lanes in the Village. Remember no one can ride on sidewalks in Oak Park business districts, but cyclists 14 years and younger can ride on sidewalks anywhere else in the Village.
- Brush up on rules of the road. Click here for safety tips for kids from Ride Illinois.
- Reminders for drivers. Every one of us has a role in road safety and reducing the number and severity of accidents, drivers included. What can drivers do to ensure walkers and bikers are safe?
- Obey school zone speed limits
- Stop for crossing guards and pedestrians
- Avoid distracted driving
- Never pass a vehicle stopped for children crossing the street
A few extra seconds of caution can help ensure every student arrives safely at school and back home each day.
Morning Library
- Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
- No pass needed
- To enter, wait by the Kenilworth doors (by the main office)
- An adult will escort groups to the library at 8:00, 8:15, and 8:30. For example, if you arrive at 8:10 you will have to wait until the 8:15 group to head up. If you arrive after the 8:30 group has been escorted, you may not enter the library that day
- You will sign-in and stay in the library until the 8:50 bell
- These times are for students to quietly read, do homework, or meet as a group to study or work on a project. Students will not be permitted to play games on their chromebooks..
Bell Schedules
Here is the Bell Schedule for SY26-27
Please note that PE and a matching elective selection will meet on an A/B rotating Day schedule. Here is the A/B day schedule - Wednesday 8/26 is an A day, and then each school day alternates. If there is a day off from school, it is skipped, and the pattern continues the next school day.
Student Arrival Entrance & Drop Off Locations; Walking/Biking & Bus Routes
Students should arrive at their designated entrance (see below) by 8:50 am.
All 6th Graders should line up to enter the building at the Washington door entrance
Non-bus riding 7th and 8th graders should line up to enter the building at the Kenilworth door entrance
Bus riding 7th and 8th graders should line up to enter the building at the Clinton door entrance
Starting after Labor Day,
Students who arrive after 8:57 am should enter the main entrance at Kenilworth and check in to the main office to receive a tardy pass to their first class.
Students that do NOT have their school-issued ID when they arrive at school, should head to the commons to receive a temporary ID between 8:15am and 8:55am before going to their first period class.
Here is a link to safe walking/bike routes & drop off locations as well as Brooks Bus Routes, which will be assigned and the route denoted on the Student ID, if you live greater than 1.5 miles from Brooks.
Bike Riders: E-bikes are NOT permitted at Brooks. Oak Park requires the rider to be at least 15 years old. Bikes can be locked at bike racks on school property on the east and west sides of the building.
DROP OFF & PICK UP INSTRUCTIONS:
We strongly encourage students who are able to walk or bike to school to do so rather than arriving by car. This reduces congestion around the school and makes drop off easier for the kids who do need to be driven to school.
IF ARRIVING AT SCHOOL BY CAR, ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS should be dropping students off on Kenilworth Ave. heading south, Randolph heading east or Washington heading west and then have the Brooks student exit on the passenger side of the car and then walk to their designated line-up location. Please refrain from pulling into the staff parking lot, as it is hazardous with multiple cars in motion, as well as staff members driving in for work. Additionally, please do not drop off or pick up on Clinton Avenue as that is where are school buses are parked. This is a safety and security concern, so we thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Spoken Word Club
Launched in Fall 2015, Spoken Word is a powerful and effective medium for fostering creativity and self-expression in young people. Kids learn to collaborate creatively and to respond to each other's work in a thoughtful and constructive manner.
When: Beginning Wed., Sept. 30th
Where: Alternate between Julian and Brooks Middle Schools
Spoken Word Club will meet Wednesdays, starting Sept. 30th from 4-5:15pm. It will alternate between Brooks and Julian, and students from both schools are invited to alternate along with the schedule. (The Sept. 30th meeting will be held at Brooks.) It is led by Spoken Word Artist and Chicago rapper Phalair along with teacher-coaches Bessie Santos (Julian) and Miles Lee (Brooks).
Parents may use this linked Registration Form to register their student for this opportunity.

Join us every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 PM in the 3rd Floor Gym.

The PTO will need adult volunteers to assist with distributing Starship lunches to all grade levels each Tuesday. More information coming soon!
Please note that to ensure the distribution process runs smoothly, we request that volunteers are able to stay for the duration of all 3 lunch periods from 10:36am - 1:03pm on any day you may sign up for. **Per D97 policy, all volunteers must complete and pass a D97 Background Check which is a quick and easy process that can be scheduled through the D97 office.**
