Monitoring Your Student's Academic Progress in Essential Standards

This week and next week, we will take intentional time to reflect on our achievement in all classes at EMS. We will be cueing students to review PowerSchool to publish/track their progress on Essential Standards in their academic planner. Do you know your student's academic standing? Your student can show you in PowerSchool AND you can review your student's planner (see the image to the left).

Increasing Self-Awareness

We want students to "know where they stand" academically. When students are certain of their strengths and weaknesses, staff and families can help the student take their next best step.

Monitoring Growth and Regression

The iReady Diagnostic tool is a "snapshot," nationally-normed measure of Math and Reading ability. We want you and your student to know about their growth or regression of Math and Reading skills to help explain why they are enrolled in specific Reading or Math FLX B or FLX C sections.

Setting Goals

Our goal is for all students to be proficient in all learning standards by the end of the year. Your student will be tracking their progress continuously throughout the year. What your student doing well? What is your student needing to develop?

Initial Data: Students' Math and Reading Skills Improve, Schoolwide

Throughout the last two weeks your student worked through our iReady Math and Reading Diagnostic tools to measure Math and Reading skills. Your student's achievement - in addition to your student's performance on in-class academic learning tasks - will help our team enroll your student in FLX B and FLX C sections to ensure continuous growth throughout the academic year.

On 1/31/22 we will be sending you individual growth reports for your student and you to view. We want you to know how well your student is learning at EMS. Below are images describing our students' overall, schoolwide growth:

Math Celebration:

--Half of all students met their annual Math goal (and we are half-way through the year)

--87% of students who were 3+ years below in Math ability, met their annual goal

Reading Celebration:

--100% of all 8th graders demonstrated growth in Reading

--83% of students, schoolwide, who were reading 3+ years below grade level, met their annual reading goal (and we are half-way through the year)

Hands-on Science Class Learning Hands-on Science Class Learning

Science 6, Science 7, and Science 8

Science 6: We are learning about what causes weather! Students engaged in a discussion after viewing a demo to explain why a cool deflated balloon begins to rise once heated. The answer is that air molecules spread out when heated, making the balloon less dense than the air around it!

Students used a video of the demo for our discussion so that all are physically distanced during class.

Science 7: Students have been working with intent on writing Claim, Evidence, Reasoning paragraphs! Students have also begun a multi-week process of collecting data on, analyzing, discussing, and ultimately improving the feedback they are giving to peers!

Science 8: Students built and wrote about models this week. Students are exploring how objects with more mass have more gravitational force as they bend both space and time (like our fabric stretched).
