4-H ENROLLMENT POLICY:
ALL youth and volunteers MUST be enrolled in 4-H and any/all projects they plan to participate in no later than January 15th, especially if planning to participate in the Fair in that project area.
RETURNING 4-H Youth Members and Volunteers will re-enroll through their existing ZSuite account and re-select your projects and clubs for the new 4-H Year. BE SURE to update any mailing addresses, parent AND youth emails, phone numbers and/or medical information at this time.
NEW 4-H Youth Members technically have all the way until January 15th to join our county 4-H program. However, the earlier the better to ensure they can take full advantage of program offerings, New 4-H Family Orientations, project orientations, club elections and get in before projects fill up!

Due to facility and/or leader and project capacity, the following 4-H Projects are NOW FULL and are no longer accepting enrollments for the 2026-2027 year:

WAITLISTS: Some projects have enrollment caps. Once a capped project reaches capacity, the project will be hidden from the enrollment system and will no longer appear as an available selection. If the project you are looking for is not listed among the available project selections, it may be full. To be added to a waitlist, you must email the 4-H Office at gallatin4h@montana.edu and specify the project(s) you would like to be added to the waitlist for.
We are very excited to see that these projects were so popular! We apologize for the inconvenience if you were interested in enrolling in one of these projects, but this shows how important it is to enroll sooner than later when the new 4-H year opens.
More options in 4-H than you think!
Still thinking about joining Gallatin County 4-H? YES - there is still a place for you!
We know many families are looking at our 2026-2027 4-H enrollment options and may be disappointed to see that some of our most popular, leader-led projects have already reached capacity. But don’t let a full project stop you from joining 4-H!
🍀Join a CLUB! Clubs are a great way to get involved in 4-H as a whole. Clubs provide opportunities to:
- Gather as a group at a monthly meeting
- Meet other 4-H members of all ages
- Make friends in different project areas
- Take part in group activities, events, trips, and traditions
- Explore a WIDE variety of educational experiences – not just one project/skill!
- Develop confidence, communication, and leadership skills
- Serve the community
- Fundraise
**If you choose to participate in a Club ONLY – select “Exploring 4-H/CLUB PARTICIPATION ONLY” as your ‘Project’ in order for the system to accept the submission of your enrollment.
🌱 Explore an Independent Study Project
Montana 4-H offers more than 200 different project areas! It is simply not possible for Gallatin County to have an official volunteer Project Leader for every one of those project areas. That’s where Independent Study comes in!!
If the Gallatin 4-H Project you were interested in “hit capacity” (leader-led projects) or does not currently have an assigned Gallatin County volunteer leader, you can still enroll in that project and complete it as an Independent Study with a parent/guardian serving as your “helper.”
Independent projects allow youth to:
- Work through the 4-H project curriculum
- Create, build, experiment, explore, and learn hands-on skills
- Set their own goals and work at their own pace
- Document their progress through photos and a project journal
- Explore careers and real-world applications
- Create an exhibit or presentation for the County Fair
Check out the 200 Montana 4-H Projects here: 4-H_Clover_2024-2026_WEB.pdf
**Animal Projects (beef, sheep, swine, goat, rabbit, poultry, dairy cow, horse, dog) cannot be completed as Independent Study due to Fair requirements and rules.
There is SO much more to 4-H than one skill, one project, or one meeting. 4-H is about learning by doing, building confidence, making friends, serving your community, developing leadership skills, and discovering what you’re capable of.

LAST CALL: Seeking 2026-2027 4-H Year Themes
Submit your ideas via this form: https://forms.gle/936SEvvYUN7DdZzAA by November 3rd!
Our 4-H Council will review all submissions at their November 3rd meeting and narrow the options down to the top 3-4 choices. Those finalists will then be shared with the entire Gallatin 4-H membership, giving everyone an opportunity to vote for your favorite to determine our winning theme for the year!
We need a good, catchy phrase to use for marketing and logo purposes throughout the year. We are striving to be more inclusive (as we have both 4-H and FFA members at our Fair), so please refrain from using "4-H" in the phrase.
- Think of words or characteristics that embody 4-H and FFA (growing, learning, exploring)
- Puns or rhyming are welcomed!
- Use Google/Pinterest to get inspiration
- Theme phrases need to be fun and easy to use for Club Display booths, possible merchandise or stickers, advertising, etc.
Examples of themes from past years:
- "Discover the Treasure of 4-H" (compass/treasure map)
- "Rising Above the Rest" (hot air balloons)
- "Mountains of Adventure"
- "Rooted in 4-H"
- "THIS is 4-H Country"
- “The MAGIC of 4-H” and “The MAGIC of Fair”
- “Hands in the Dirt. Hearts in the Work.”
2026-2027 Livestock Contract
ALL youth participating in a 4-H or FFA Livestock Project must read and sign the digital 2026–2027 Gallatin County Livestock Contract, regardless of whether they plan to sell an animal at the 2027 Gallatin 4-H/FFA Fair. This contract outlines important program expectations, including required workshops, animal possession deadlines, and other livestock project and fair requirements. Both the youth member and their parent/guardian must sign the contract.
This contract is MANDATORY for all livestock project participants and must be completed by the possession deadline for your species, as listed in Section 4 of the contract. Please note: This contract is in addition to any specie-specific contracts or requirements provided by your project leaders. The 2027 Fairbook, typically published in March or April, will include additional policies, divisions, and classes specific to the Fair.
Fill out a separate contract for each youth member. After both the youth and parent/guardian sign the contract, families and the 4-H Office will be auto-emailed a copy of the completed contract(s) to keep for your records. The 4-H Office will pass along the signed contracts to the appropriate species leaders for tracking purposes (and FFA advisers if applicable).
Sign Contract Here: https://na3.docusign.net/Member/PowerFormSigning.aspx?PowerFormId=a4c62133-0cb6-4c1a-a1a9-5fb6515318e4&env=na3&acct=960f6090-f7cb-40a6-adf5-0490f456d6eb&v=2

Setting S.M.A.R.T Goals in 4-H Record Books
4-H Record Books give members an opportunity to reflect on their yearly work. Record Books require youth to document their skill development and their learning experiences in a written report. 4-H members measure their achievements and growth in their total years in 4-H. 4-H Record Books encourage members to set goals, pursue strategies to meet those goals, and to shift gears in the face of challenges and obstacles.
As we enter November, families should be picking up their Project Record Book documents and curriculum books from our 4-H office and working to set youth S.M.A.R.T goals for the 2026-2027 4-H Year.
S.M.A.R.T Goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound objectives that help youth in 4-H programs achieve their aspirations effectively.
Here’s a breakdown of each component in the context of 4-H:
Specific:
- Goals should be clear and specific, answering the questions of who, what, where, when, and why. For example, instead of saying "I want to improve my skills," a specific goal would be "I want to learn how to plant a vegetable garden in my backyard."
Measurable:
- There should be criteria for measuring progress toward the goal. This could involve quantifying the goal or setting milestones. For instance, "I will plant at least 10 different types of vegetables by the end of the summer."
Attainable:
- Goals should be realistic and achievable, considering the resources and constraints. An attainable goal might be "I will dedicate two hours each week to gardening."
Relevant:
- The goal should matter to the individual and align with broader objectives. For example, "Learning to garden will help me understand where my food comes from and promote healthy eating."
Time- Bound:
- Goals should have a deadline or timeframe for completion. For instance, "I will complete my vegetable garden by June 30."
RECENT HIGHLIGHTS
CONGRATULATIONS to our newly selected 2026-2027 Gallatin County 4-H Ambassadors!
Please join us in congratulating our 2026–2027 Gallatin County 4-H Ambassador Team! These six teens were selected through an application and interview process to represent our county program throughout the year.
Congratulations to Moriah Colton, Maggie Radke, Bob Smieja, Makenze Woodring, Keeley Luhrsen, and Roslyn Knapp!
Our older 4-H members are more than participants - they are the leaders, role models and the energy behind our program. Without teens willing to step up, we cannot provide the strong program our members deserve.
Our Ambassadors work alongside the 4-H Agent to plan events, mentor younger members, teach county workshops, help lead the Teen Leadership Project, and represent Gallatin County 4-H at activities throughout the year.
We’re excited to see these young leaders grow, serve, and make a difference in our 4-H community!

Club & Project Leader Training Recap
MANDATORY: The word that makes everyone’s eyes roll🙄😂🍀
We knew making our Club & Project Leader Training mandatory this year would be a risk, but it was one we were willing to take because we believe strong leaders are the foundation of a strong youth development program!
To kick off the new 4-H year, we offered three training sessions over the past few weeks to bring a total of 67 Gallatin 4-H Club & Project Leaders together to learn, connect, and start the year on the same page. From club/project meeting procedures and volunteer responsibilities, to financial and risk management, our goal was to create consistency across our program and ensure everyone had the information and resources needed for a successful year ahead.
Because 4-H is about so much more than projects and the annual Fair. It’s about education, leadership, life skills, and creating opportunities for young people to learn and grow - and that starts with investing in the volunteers who make it all possible.
A huge thank you to our incredible Club & Project Leaders for showing up. We’re grateful for each of you!
UPCOMING ACTIVITIES
Montana 4-H Leadership Academy
We invite 4-H youth, ages 11–14, to tune into the Montana 4-H Leadership Academy Series - a series of interactive online workshops designed to help youth build skills they can use in 4-H, school, and their community.
Workshops are delivered virtually via ZOOM. Virtual sessions will be offered one Sunday each month at 6:00pm, November-March. Participants can join from the comfort of their own home, or get together in small groups to participate in the Zoom session together. Leadership Academy is led by the Montana 4-H State Ambassador Officer Team and advisors. Leadership Academy is for youth interested in learning about leadership, with workshop activities and content designed especially for emerging leaders ages 11–14. Each workshop focuses on a different leadership skill and gives youth opportunities to learn, practice, share ideas, and connect with other 4-H members across the state.
This series is a great fit for youth who are:
- Curious about leadership
- Looking to grow their confidence, communication skills, and ability to work with others
- Interested in becoming a club officer someday
- Thinking about future roles like 4-H Camp Counselor, County Teen Leader, or 4-H Ambassador
- Or simply aren’t quite old enough to participate in teen-level 4-H leadership opportunities
2026-2027 Leadership Academy Sessions:
You do not need to attend all five workshops to benefit from this learning opportunity! You can pick and choose the topics that interest you or attend based on the dates that fit your schedule.
- KNOW YOURSELF – Self Awareness (Sunday, November 1st at 6pm). What makes you, YOU? Discover the strengths you bring to a group, what makes your leadership style unique, and one skill you want to grow.
- MAKE CONNECTIONS – Communication (Sunday, December 13th at 6pm). Good leaders listen first. Put your communication skills to the test as you practice listening, asking great questions, and getting your ideas across clearly.
- BETTER TOGETHER – Teamwork (Sunday, January 10th at 6pm). Good teams need everyone. Take on fun challenges while discovering how to share ideas, include others, encourage teammates, and help a group succeed.
- FIGURING IT OUT – Problem Solving (Sunday, February 7th at 6pm). Be ready for anything to happen. Tackle a challenge, explore different solutions, make a plan, and learn what to do when Plan A doesn't quite work.
- MAKE IT HAPPEN – Initiative (Sunday, March 7th at 6pm). Don't just have an idea, put into action. Spot an opportunity to make a difference and turn your idea into a first step you can actually take.
How to Participate:
Register for Leadership Academy Here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/-mkVu7ACRe-uaUKoZRWwhw#/. Once registered, you will automatically receive an email with the Zoom meeting link and information for all five Leadership Academy workshops. We recommend that each participant register individually so they receive the Zoom meeting information directly.
Hello to our NEW 4-H Families!
You’ve joined 4-H - now what? We’d love to help our first-year 4-H families get off to a great start! Join us for our New 4-H Family Orientation on Tuesday, November 10th at 6pm in Building #3 at the Fairgrounds in Bozeman. We know there’s a lot to learn when navigating 4-H, and we want to help make the experience a little less overwhelming! There will be a short presentation from our Office Staff, followed by some helpful advice from our volunteers, concluding with time to allow families to wander around open-house-style to get their specific questions answered by leaders.
We’ll cover:
- Program Overview & Expectations: What 4-H looks like for youth and families, and what happens next.
- Communications & Staying Informed: Where to find updates, important information, and project requirements throughout the year.
- Tips & Tricks from Experienced Families: Our volunteers will share lessons learned and advice for navigating the program.
- Ask a Leader: Some of our Club and Project leaders will be there to answer questions pertaining to Clubs, Indoor and Animal Projects.
- Connect with 4-H Teens: Our teen Ambassadors will be there to answer youth questions and share their perspectives with fellow members.
This Orientation will be geared primarily toward parents and helping families navigate the Gallatin 4-H experience, but youth are absolutely welcome and encouraged to attend! **Can’t make it? Don’t worry – your Club/Project leaders will have orientation information available at your first Club/Project meeting specific to that Club/Project. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to a Leader or the Office!
We hope you’ll join us as we kick off a great year in 4-H. We look forward to seeing you there!
Getting Started in Your 4-H Independent Study Project
Projects with no official Leader = Independent Study 4-H Projects
If a youth member is enrolled in a Project that Gallatin County 4-H does not currently have an official leader for, members participate in that project as “Independent Study”, with their parent/guardian as a “helper.” Independent Projects are a great way to build skills, learn by doing, and take ownership of a self-directed learning experience. Families will guide youth members through the project at home utilizing the 4-H Project Curriculum Book.
Below are some FAQ and steps to help you get started and stay on track for a successful year:
1. Which Gallatin County 4-H projects are Independent Study 4-H Projects in 2026-2027?
- We currently have youth enrolled in: Aerospace, Baking Independent Study, Cake Decorating Independent Study, Cooking Independent Study, Electric, Embroidery, Entomology, Family Adventures, Forestry, Gardening, Interior Design, Knitting/Crochet Independent Study, Pocket Pets, Quilting Independent Study, Robotics Independent Study, Scrapbooking, Sewing Independent Study, Small Engines, Sport Fishing, Visual Arts Independent Study, Welding, Woodworking.
2. When do I get started in my Independent Study 4-H Project?
- As soon as possible!! Pick up project curriculum books and Record Book documents for the year at the 4-H Extension Office (903 N. Black Ave, Bozeman – located within the Fairgrounds) - these are required to participate in Fair, the sooner you start the better!
- YOU are the leader of your own project so tailor the project pace around your family’s schedule. You can either cruise through the activities/curriculum during a slow season in your year or pace yourself to work on your project on a monthly basis like our other 4-H projects do
3. Keep Up with Your Record Book - Record books are an important part of every 4-H project. They help members track goals, progress, expenses, and reflections.
- Use the Gallatin County 4-H Record Book resources: 4-H Record Book - Gallatin County Extension | Montana State University
- ***Youth must complete just 7 activities in their project curriculum book per 4-H year (requirement if participating/submitting an exhibit to the Fair) – youth do not finish the whole curriculum book in one year, they are designed to last up to 3 years (21 activities per book, finish 7 per year = should last 3 years).
- Update your project journal regularly
- Include photos or documentation of your work
4. Define Your Project Goals - Start by identifying what your member wants to learn or accomplish this year in that Project area
Ask questions like:
- What interests me about this topic?
- What new skills do I want to learn?
- What will my final project or exhibit look like?
Set S.M.A.R.T Goals in your Record Book:
- Specific: Goals should be clear and specific, answering the questions of who, what, where, when, and why. For example, instead of saying "I want to improve my skills," a specific goal would be "I want to learn how to plant a vegetable garden in my backyard."
- Measurable: There should be criteria for measuring progress toward the goal. This could involve quantifying the goal or setting milestones. For instance, "I will plant at least 10 different types of vegetables by the end of the summer.
- Attainable: Goals should be realistic and achievable, considering the resources and constraints. An attainable goal might be "I will dedicate two hours each week to gardening."
- Relevant/Realistic: The goal should matter to the individual and align with broader objectives. For example, "Learning to garden will help me understand where my food comes from and promote healthy eating.
- Time- Bound: Goals should have a deadline or timeframe for completion. For instance, "I will complete my vegetable garden by June 30."
5. Begin Your Project Work - Independent projects can take many forms—some examples include:
- Working through the project curriculum book to learn about the subject area and completing hands-on tasks
- Creating an item (i.e. woodworking or sewing item)
- Exploring potential careers within that project area
- Conducting an experiment or research projec
- Keep detailed notes and photos of your progress along the way. These will be helpful for your record book and fair display later.
6. Participating in the County Fair
- Participating in our annual county fair (Big Sky Country State Fair – 3rd week of July) is not required, however highly encouraged as it is a great opportunity to showcase our local 4-H youth, their skills, creativity and accomplishments! Gallatin 4-H has an entire indoor exhibit building at the fair that is dedicated to 4-H/FFA youth exhibits.
- Participating in the fair will require turning in a Record Book (due June 23rd, 2027) and completing a brief interview(s) with a community member judge with their project the week before the Fair (i.e. poster, sewn item, welding creation, etc) – more information to come on this later.
- Think about how you might share what you’ve learned at our annual County Fair…
Ideas include:
- A display board summarizing your project
- An educational poster with photos and key learnings
- A finished product (like an art piece, model, or baked item)
- A presentation or demonstration
If you’re unsure how to exhibit your project, we’re happy to help you brainstorm! More information on the Fair here: 4-H/FFA Fair Information - Gallatin County Extension | Montana State University.
7. Stay Connected - Even though you don’t have an official designated Project Leader, you’re still part of our Gallatin 4-H community!
- Take advantage of our county-wide activities and workshops that are offered throughout the year – all activities are published in our monthly 4-H Newsletter: 4-H Newsletters - Gallatin County Extension | Montana State University
- If you’d like guidance, feedback, or project ideas, reach out to the Extension Office at gallatin4h@montana.edu or 406-582-3280. We can connect you with project resources, examples, or others with experience in your area of interest.
We’re excited to see the creativity and independence that comes from these projects. Thank you for supporting your member’s 4-H journey—and remember, the most important part of any 4-H project is learning by doing!
Club Officer Training
We encourage any Club Officers, and any supporting roles such as Recreation Leaders, to attend together and strengthen their teamwork.
Our new Gallatin 4-H County Ambassador Team and Teen Leaders are excited to host a fun and engaging opportunity for Club Officer teams! The Club Officer Training will be an energetic, interactive weekday-evening workshop. Participants will dive into topics such as:
- Creating a welcoming club environment
- Fun and effective icebreakers and recreation games
- Productive brainstorming strategies
- Structuring club meetings & basic parliamentary procedure
- Understanding officer roles and responsibilities
When: Wednesday, November 18th
Time: 5:30pm-8:00pm

Earn Money for your 4-H Project or Club
NEW EVENTS RELEASED (Football, Basketball, Volleyball, PowWow, Rodeo)
We have the AMAZING opportunity to continue to work MSU Concessions and this has become a GREAT way to raise money for 4-H club/project activities! Please see the link below for the 2026 Fall Fundraising concessions events at MSU! We frequently commit to events throughout the year as they arise and update the SignUp Genius accordingly.
What does working MSU Concessions entail?
All food is made and prepped by MSU Culinary/Concessions staff, 4-H members/parents just simply sell and serve it out of one of the concessions stands on MSU Campus (Stadium or Fieldhouse depending on the event). This is a super easy, fun and quick way to make money for your Clubs/Projects and gain some skills in the service industry! A Stand Leader and MSU Concessions staff will train you on the spot with what you need to know - No experience necessary!
If club/project members sign up for an event as a group, your club/project will get ALL the tips and a percentage of the profits from that event. If multiple projects/clubs sign up for the same game, then the tips and profits will be split between the groups. So, we highly encourage you to gather up your members, pick a game/event that your club/project will work as one group to maximize the amount of money you will earn!
Depending on the event, the day/time/hours will vary and depending on our concessions stand location, the number of people we will need per game will vary. We will need a combination of youths (minimum age of 10 with parent accompaniment) and teens/adults (ages 15+) to run cash registers.
If you have any questions, please contact the 4-H Office gallatin4h@montana.edu
Shooting Sports Leader Training
Our Gallatin 4-H Shooting Sports projects serve over 200 youth every year and with another 4-H Year right around the corner, we are always looking to recruit more 4-H Shooting Sports Volunteers! Shooting Sports is a safe, fun and challenging activity that can become a lifelong passion to be shared with the family. The safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment is the primary focus of the 4-H Shooting Sports program. Youth members will improve marksmanship skills, have the opportunity to compete, and learn self-discipline and personal responsibility.
ALL 4-H shooting sports volunteers must attend a State Training workshop and become certified in a shooting discipline before serving as project leaders and volunteers. Project disciplines include: Air Pistol, Small Bore Pistol (.22), Air Rifle, Small Bore Rifle (.22), Archery, Shotgun, Muzzleloading, Hunting, and Western Heritage.

We hope you'll check us out if you're looking for a club in the Manhattan area.

This kids want fed this year @ meetings ;-) Seems to be a theme with successful groups (incentives the kids to come and participate) so I'm all-in 🙌
Here is the signup for THE ENTIRE YEAR: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0C4DADA92AA0F8CF8-67200448-drycreek#/. I tried to put meeting topics we discussed during our planning but those are subject to change.
The Signup does not dictate what to bring but a pair of families can coordinate the meal and drinks. Watch the RSVPs to gauge quantities, but plan for some last-minute adds. IDK...maybe they'll get on track with RSVPing when they run out of food a few times 😜
There is a 7-day reminder set on the signup so if you grab one way out and you can no longer cover it, please post to the group for a substitute. ~ TIA to everyone for the help! 🍀

Meeting Place, Date & Time:

Our first meeting on October 13 was well attended with lots of new and returning members. Miss Rebecca led a fun icebreaker where the kids had to act like elephants and giraffes (don't ask 😉). The kids shared out their service reports and which projects they were signed up for. Nominations were held for President, Secretary, Treasurer and Historian(s). Our activity was fun - the kids wrote ideas for what we can do this year as a club on sticky notes and pasted them on the wall. Then the members voted on their favorite ideas. Our next meeting will be Monday, November 9th. Keep an eye on the Club BAND for updates.
Looks like we will have a packed calendar this 4-H year, with these activities receiving the most votes: skiing, bowling, painting ceramics at Arts on Fire, running a 5K and the Butte waterpark; top-voted community service projects: walking dogs for elderly people, visiting the senior center, shoveling snow, coat drive; and the top-voted fund raisers: wrapping gifts at Murdochs, bake sale, karaoke at the Manhattan Christmas stroll, designing and selling teeshirts for sale.

Hello Cat Project Members and Families!
We are excited to kick off another great year with the Gallatin County 4-H Cat Project! 🐱
📅 Meeting Date: November 4
⏰ Time: 5:30 PM
📍 Location: Alpenglow Animal Hospital
For our first meeting of the year, we’ll be exploring the various breeds of cats and their characteristics (both personalities and physically!)! We’ll have some fun activities and plenty of opportunities to learn more about our feline friends.
We also want to hear from YOU! One of the things that made our meetings so successful last year was having our own 4-H members take the lead by sharing presentations, organizing games, and planning fun activities. We would love to see that continue this year! We’ll spend some time brainstorming exciting topics and ideas for future meetings, and we encourage everyone to participate and share their interests and talents.
Remember, this is YOUR project, and your ideas help make it great! Whether you love learning about cat health and behavior, grooming, breeds, training, showing, or just fun cat facts, we want to hear what interests you!
📚 Don’t forget to bring your record books!
I have also set up a Gallatin County 4-H Cat Project Facebook group for sharing ideas and asking opinions/advice about various cat-related subjects, as well as keeping up to date on activities as an addition to the BAND app, which gets very busy sometimes!
https://www.facebook.com/share/g/19csHmATxL/
We look forward to seeing everyone, catching up, and starting another fantastic year of learning, friendship, and all things CAT!
See you November 4th! 🐾

Hello Everyone! My name is Jen and I am the leader of the dog agility and dog obedience projects. This will be about my eighth year leading a dog project.
I hope that you all are as excited about this new year as I am! The obedience portion of the dog project is currently full, however if you are wanting to participate in the project please call the office and get on the waitlist as we will be deciding over the next couple months as to how many can be added to the project. With that said, remember as well that in order to participate in the agility project you must have first completed one year in dog obedience.
This year, much like last year, we will try to have monthly guest speakers from various career paths revolving around dogs and this will start hopefully in December/January. These sessions could be on a variety of days not always a Wednesday. Watch in monthly newsletters to find out more about upcoming guest speakers and other information.
Typically, we start our formal meetings/classes at the end of March and run weekly until fair. This year our project meetings/classes will be held on Wednesdays at Montana Murray Kennels. There will be an obedience class at both 4pm and 5pm for the first five weeks and then drop down to one class at 5pm. Agility will always be at 6pm.

Happy November to all of the 4-H poultry project members!
This past month our project members assisted with a community service event with the Montana Veteran's Meat Locker giveway in Belgrade. Thank you to those members who helped with the service event and to the project members who raised quality animals that went to the feed our local veterans in our community this past year. Our project also did some fundraising with the MSU football concessions on Halloween! Thank you to those who helped raise funds used to support our poultry project this coming year!
We are now into the new 4-H year and are looking forward to our first poultry project meeting! The meeting will be held on Monday November 23, 2026 at the Belgrade Middle School Cafeteria 6:30pm to 8:00pm. This meeting is for both new and returning project members! Please note that the project has made a change for the new year and members will need to attend at least 4 workshops prior to the end of June 2027 in order to show at the fair in July.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting and hope you enjoy the turkey month!

Must attend a minimum of (4) Swine Workshops to be eligible for Fair.
Swine Project Welcome Letter: 2027 Welcome Letter - Google Docs. Please read through it but here are some common FAQs & additional information to get you started:
When are the Swine Project Meetings? We do not meet regularly (same-day-each-month-type schedule) We will offer many opportunities for the youth to meet the 4-workshop requirements (yes, we have 4 required instead of 3 now) between now and June (typically 12-15 workshops are offered). Our Committee is working to plan the workshops and will issue lists via email so you can plan your project. If you have any ideas for a workshop topic, please let us know!! We love to offer swine education in new areas that our members are interested in.
What should we be doing right now to get ready?
- Go by the Extension Office and pay your invoice to become fully registered in 4-H & pick up your Project Workbooks (if you're new to swine) as well as your Record Book forms.
- Look around for a source for your pigs, discuss your budget for purchasing, and make plans for building / improving your pen and shelter for your pigs in the spring. We've also attached the COOL Source Form that will help you decipher some of the information you'll need to gather when acquiring your pigs. LOTS more info to come on getting your project kicked off if you're new...but most pigs are born late December/January 1st and ready for their new homes mid-March/early-April. They will weigh 50-100 pounds at this point and in the following 90 days+, you'll raise them to be 220-290lbs.
Let us know if you have any questions or need more information at this time. We look forward to reaching out again soon! We hope you have a great November

The leadership opportunities listed below are an incredible way to build leadership, communication, teamwork, event-planning and public-speaking skills that can strengthen college applications, resumes, scholarship applications and future careers.

Hello Cloverbuds 🍀
My name is BreeAnna. This is my second year leading the Cloverbuds Project. My son’s third year in Cloverbuds and 4H. I am a little bit of everything. I am a solo-parent. I am an entrepreneur with three businesses (cleaning, Airbnb and music/movement teacher for kids under 6). On top of that I also homeschool my son. We are huge animal lovers. We have 2 dogs, 2 chickens, 4 cats and a bunny. I truly enjoy working with this age group, which is why I volunteer to lead the project. I hope that I can help all of them discover the opportunities that 4H has in store for them.
We will meet every 2nd Tuesday of each month in the exhibit buildings at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds from 5:30-6:30/7:00. Unless otherwise specified (in case we do a field trip). Please make sure your Cloverbud brings crayons, markers, glue, scissors and a pencil to each meeting. This way they will always be prepared. If they need anything extra I will make sure to mention that in my email I try to send out a couple days before our meeting that month.
We did already have our first meeting on October 13th…but no worries if you missed it or hadn’t signed up yet. We will just see you at our next meeting on Tuesday, November 10th!!! If you are not signed up yet, please do so. We are almost at capacity for this 4-H year.
See Y’all November 10th at 5:30 in Exhibit Building #4 at the Fairgrounds.

Wow! What a turnout for our first meeting! Thanks so much to Kryka Shockley for bringing your sweet horse for us to meet and learn about the "Parts of the Horse." 🏇
Our next meeting will be Saturday, November 7th out at the barn in Gallatin Gateway with Katie Lynn Smith. Be on the lookout for an email with times, address of the barn, and a liability waiver to sign. Be sure you are registered and paid in our project before Nov. 7th! Siblings are welcome to join us at the arena, but can not be in the arena with the horses if they aren't registered 4-H project members. As always, bring your project book! Wear close-toed shoes or boots and check the weather -- the barn isn't heated, so dress appropriately to be outside for at least an hour. ❄️
Mark your calendars now for our Christmas party on Thursday December 3rd. We will have food, games, learning, and an ornament exchange. Please bring an ag-related ornament (wrapped or in a bag). We promise not to go "pasture" bedtime, but the good times will have you ready to hit the hay! 🐴
Check out the link in the newsletter above to volunteer at an MSU event for our Horseless Horse Project. Remember -- 1 volunteer event, 5 meetings attended, and 5 projects completed earn you a FREE riding lesson! 🍀

No meeting in December
We had our first meeting of the 2026-27 4H year in October. I hope that everyone found it informative.
The first half the meeting was spent going over record books and how they work, in an attempt to get everyone started off on the right foot. The beginning of the year is also a good time to go over and review how to set goals. Developing high-quality goals requires an understanding of what makes a good goal. 4H encourages you to use the SMART goal setting system when you pick a goal. SMART is an acronym for S-Specific, M-Measurable, A-Attainable, R-realistic, T-time based. Examples of good goals are: “I am going to finish all 7 leather craft project activities by March 31,” “I am going to be able to identify the six basic leather tools and know how they are used by May 1.” These would be good project specific goals. These would go on your project specific record book. Non-SMART goal examples: “I want to rebuild a saddle” or “I want to have fun”. I would like everyone to come to the next meeting with two general goals in for you My 4H Year record book and two project specific goals for your leather craft “Non-Animal Financial Record book.” If you have questions about how to fill out record books Molly and her team will be hosting a county wide workshop and I would encourage you go to attend that, or you can go to https://www.montana.edu/extension/gallatin/4hrecordbook.html. Here you will find the files to download and print yourself, electronic versions to fill out if you choose to fill it out that way, you will also find videos on how to fill them out, detailed instructions on how to fill them out, examples and also rubrics on how they will be evaluated by the leaders. If you prefer you can always ask me. But this first meeting will be the only meeting we will spend significant time on how to fill out a record book.
Colorado State Extension is where the activity book I had printed off for you was, but we only printed off the first few pages as it is 160-page document. Here is the link to the entire document Leathercraft Manual if you desire to visit it and print out additional pages. Colorado State has also developed a video series that goes along with a lot of what we go over during our monthly meetings so feel free to visit these as needed.
I also passed out the activity books and the leather craft activity tracking sheet that needs to be turned in with your record book at the end of the year. Since leather craft is different than a lot of other projects, I developed this activity tracking sheet and by attending most of the meetings you will get hands on experience learning 7 items. You also need to demonstrate what you know about that specific task. For instance, Casing of Leather, you will put a date and either the parent or I will initial the activity sheet, in addition I require a simple description as to what is casing of leather, how to do it and any other details. This will, of course, look different for 9-year-old than a 16-year-old.
The second half of the meeting is one of my favorite times all year. We passed around, felt and looked at many different types of leather and identified the sources of leather (cow, ostrich, pig, lizard, elephant, kangaroo, etc), the tanning technique, and some of the potential uses of each of the different types of leather. I think that everyone was shocked by at least one of the samples we passed around.
At this point you don’t need to purchase anything for this project unless you are wanting to. I have several sets of the basic tools that we use as a class and can be checked out between meetings, just be sure to bring them to the next meeting so we have enough. By attending the meeting, they will complete a couple of projects but if they want to do more they are free to, for first year leather craft kids should choose kits for projects. There are lots of places you can go online to purchase kits from belts to coasters, to glasses cases, to key chains, bookmarks, ect. Unfortunately, I have heard that Hobby Lobby is phasing out their leather craft section, but you are free to look there. Online locations include Weaver Leather, Springfield Leather, Tandy Leather, Real leather, Makers Leather, Montana leather, amazon.
I also encourage all of you who are not part of a club to try out a couple of clubs to see if there is one that fits. Clubs provide more than just a project can. IF YOU CHANGE YOUR CLUB STATUS: BE SURE TO HAVE THE EXTENSION OFFICE CHANGE IT as z-suite has a few quirks.
Our next meeting on Nov 21, is going to be a lot more hands on with everyone learning the 6 basic tools and getting to do some basic tooling. The meeting will be at the Gallatin County Extension office at 903 North Black Avenue and enter from the north side of the building. The meeting will go from 1-4pm and please bring your record books with 2 smart goals for your my 4H year and 2 goals for your leathercraft project.
If I am missing any emails for your family please respond to this one and let me know.
Feel free to reach out at any time.

The Vet Science Project is off and rolling! A big thank you to Dr. Katy Malcott for joining us at our first meeting to help steer members toward getting into vet school, exploring other vet science careers, and showing us a few "props" from the clinic. We also plastered the office in "germs" and searched for them under black lights. 😃
We won't be meeting in the classroom for November, but we will be traveling to Livingston for a small ruminant workshop held at the Spur Line. Be sure to let me know if you are attending, so we can plan a carpool!
Here is an upcoming schedule:
🐑 Friday November 13 - 3-6 pm Small Ruminant Workshop @ the Spur Line
🧑🎄 Thursday December 3 - 6 pm Holiday Party at the Fairgrounds Building #4 (along with Horseless Horse - ornament exchange, games, food, and learning!)
🐴 Wednesday March 17th - MSU Farrier School (daytime - TBD) (I know this is Spring Break and not everyone will be able to make it, but the farrier school wanted to schedule with us on a school day so their students can teach!)
More fun to come!
