AR Reading Program - AR NIGHT OUT -
The Accelerated Reader (AR) program is an optional activity for students. While participation is encouraged as a way to foster a love for reading and track progress, it is not a required component of the curriculum. Students are welcome to participate at their own pace and comfort level. We recognize students during lunch time when they reach 25, 50, 75, 100, 150 & 200 AR points.
Students who meet the following Accelerated Reader point goals by the end of January will qualify for an invitation to an AR Night Out event scheduled for February 11th:
Grades 1–3: Must earn 25 or more AR points
Grades 4–5: Must earn 50 or more AR points
Over winter break Accelerated Reader (AR) will be open and available for students to participate in taking quizzes on books they have currently read. Students can earn their points by reading books, logging into the Accelerated Reader program, and taking quizzes on the books that they read.
Click here to access how students can log into the AR program.
If you have any questions about the AR program, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Harsila, aharsila@sd13.org or Mr. Pearlman, brianpearlman@sd13.org
Winter Weather
As the temperatures begin to drop, we want to share a reminder about our recess procedures to ensure all students are dressed appropriately for outdoor play:
Outdoor or Indoor Recess?: Students will line up outside at arrival and enjoy outdoor recess when the temperature is 10 degrees Fahrenheit or above (including the windchill factor). We also continuously monitor the conditions of the blacktop and playground surfaces to ensure they are safe for students.
Dress Warmly: Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather every day with a warm coat, hat, and gloves.
Snow Play: Students are allowed to play in the snow if they are fully dressed in the required gear: snow boots, snow pants, winter coat, hat, and gloves. Without all these items, students must remain on the dry blacktop areas.
Thank you for helping us ensure a safe and comfortable outdoor experience for everyone!
E-Learning
Due to summer construction, we can NOT extend the school year. The last day of school WILL be May 22 for all full day students. Therefore, if a "snow day" is called there will be an E-Learning Day.
The Bloomingdale School District will send an email/phone message to all families if an E-Learning Day is called either the night before or the morning of by 6:30am. We understand supervision and assistance at home will vary based on each family’s situation. The E-Learning plan will be flexible for student participation due to age, home support and other unexpected factors. Our goal is to ensure students are able to engage in learning activities while at home.
- An E-Learning day is from 9:00 am - 2:30 pm
- There is an optional check-in with the classroom teacher at 9:00 am & 12:00 pm
- The classroom teacher will be available throughout the day to provide support and assistance
- Students will have three school days to complete assignments. We understand that some students will not have the supervision or assistance at home to complete activities

A Bloomingdale Champion Award
A Bloomingdale Champion (ABC) is a community member or a staff member who exemplifies one or more of the core values of District 13 through intentional acts that:
- Ensure every child will learn;
- Treat everyone with honor and respect, and;
- Demonstrate a willingness to work together to achieve a goal.
- The nominee must have specific experiences that demonstrate key elements of at least one of the core values to be considered as a finalist.
- Nominees shall be brought to a committee made up of members of the Bloomingdale Council of Teachers, the Board of Education of Bloomingdale School District 13 and the Administration.
- Using a rubric (below), each nominee will be scored by each member of the committee until one community member and/or one staff member has been selected for recognition.
- The form should only take 10 to 15 minutes to complete.
The Rising Star Award
One of the most critical roles in Bloomingdale School District 13 is the paraprofessional. These individuals support instruction from within the classroom, can be directly assigned to students whose goals are outlined on an Individual Education Plan, and, in many cases, are the source of substitute teaching in each building. They supervise lunch and busses, deliver curriculum under the teacher's supervision, and are often the ones helping calm down and dry the tears of children.
With the Shining Star Award, District 13 wants to recognize the work of this group of employees through the special work and support they provide daily. If you as a staff member, or you as a parent through your child have had a wonderful experience working with a paraprofessional, please take the time to complete this brief form to nominate them for this recognition. A couple of times a year, nominees will be selected by a group comprised of school board members, staff, and administration based on the impact the paraprofessional has had through the description you provide.
Message from Nurse Rosero
Required Health Forms for the upcoming school year:
- Kindergarten: Physical, Dental, & Vision
- 2nd Grade: Dental
- Health Office Website
Student Needs:
Please inform the nurse of any allergies or sensitivities to foods, medications, and environmental allergens. If there are any pertinent details of your students' health that you feel the nurse needs to know, please reach out and discuss this with the school nurse. This information can be helpful to better support your student throughout the day, if certain situations arise.
About Your Student’s Medication:
The district's medication administration policy mandates that all medication to be administered at school requires an MD order, this includes over-the-counter medications. Students may NOT keep over-the-counter meds in their backpacks or in their lockers--including cough drops, Advil, etc. This is an important safety concern! Please review the policy included in the registration process.
If your student requires an inhaler, Epi-Pen, or any oral medication, please obtain the medication form and appropriate health care plan from your physician when your child has their exam. Forms may also be obtained on the district website.
Excused Physical Education Class:
Please note that all PE excuses need to be sent to the Nurse's Office. A parent may excuse a student from PE for up to 3 days. (consecutively) Thereafter, a Doctor's note is required.

AR Reading Program
The Accelerated Reader (AR) program at DuJardin: Students in first-fifth grade can take AR tests on the books they read.
As students earn points, they can get rewards, including bookmarks, brag tags, and a chance to attend our special AR Night Out in January and the big End of Year Field Trip in May!
Mr. Pearlman will be going over the AR program during library with our First and Second grade students this coming week. Most books we have in the library are AR books and students can read the book and take a quiz to earn points. So, find a great book, get reading, and let's get those points!
Click here for more information about the AR program at DuJardin.
Please note: this is an optional reading incentive program.
