Fall Festival
The Jefferson Fall Festival was this past Friday. This is an annual event run by the PTO that includes food, music, games, and crafts. Many of our alumni come back to help run the activities. A highlight is the Annual 5th Grade Pie Eating Contest vs. Dr. Droske. This year, Everett Serafin was the winner.
Preschool Hayride
Another fun activity this week was the Preschool Hayride. Since our special education preschoolers are not quite ready to take a field trip off campus, our PTO brings the pumpkin patch to them. The students get to take a hayride to the back field where they can pick a pumpkin.

Supporting Our Multilingual Learners Through Empathy
This month, teachers from Lincoln Middle School and Hawthorne High School participated in the first session of a five-part professional learning series on Sheltered English Instruction with Dr. Alex Guzman. The session introduced Empathy Mapping, a reflective activity that encouraged educators to consider how our multilingual learners think, feel, say, and do in their daily school experiences. By gaining insight into the challenges these students face, our teachers are better equipped to provide meaningful support. Across the district, we are committed to putting empathy at the forefront of our decision-making this year to ensure all students feel seen, heard, and valued.

David has already made such a positive impression in the first few weeks of school that exemplifies responsibility and organization. From Day 1 his responsibility has stood out. Within the first few days he has not only been able to handle his own schedule, but also helped others stay organized and follow their schedule. These actions show maturity, consideration, and leadership and they are truly valued.

Natalya Fischer
Natalya is off to a fantastic start at Lincoln Middle School and is truly embodying our “Be a Bear” motto.
From day one, she has stood out as a rockstar, always eager to lend a hand, whether to her teachers or fellow classmates. There hasn’t been a single day when Natalya hasn’t volunteered to help with something. Her generosity, kindness, and genuine desire to support others reflect a deep goodness of heart that makes her a natural role model.
What makes Natalya even more special is her smile and positive attitude. She approaches each day with cheerfulness, politeness, and a willingness to make a difference. Whether someone needs a hand, a kind word, or simply a friend, we can always count on Natalya.
We are so lucky to have her as part of the Lincoln Middle School community!

Faith Martinez
Teacher of Dance/Theater, Ms. Grunfeld (Sonia) shared, "We are thrilled to share some incredible news from our Performing Arts Department! Faith Martinez, a junior, has been selected to perform at Carnegie Hall this February as part of the prestigious Honors Performance Series. This international program recognizes outstanding high school musicians from around the globe. Students must be referred by an educator and complete a competitive audition process to be chosen. Faith will have the extraordinary opportunity to sing under the direction of a master conductor alongside top musicians from around the world. She recently shared the exciting news after months of dedication and preparation, having applied, auditioned, and submitted all materials last spring. We are so proud of Faith’s remarkable achievement and can’t wait to cheer her on as she takes the stage at Carnegie Hall!

Sunday, October 5, 2025, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, 8 Acre Woods at Maitland Avenue
The Hawthorne Environmental Commission, Hawthorne Green Team, Borough of Hawthorne, and Hawthorne Rotary International are sponsoring a Garbage and Litter Clean- Up Campaign, entitled: “Help the Hawthorne Bee Defeat Litter!” The Hawthorne Bee is back as the caped crusader against the debris that dirties Hawthorne. The campaign commences on Sunday October 5, 2025 and will be an ongoing effort of all Hawthorne residents to come forth and Keep Hawthorne Clean! by cleaning up your neighborhood.
To help the Hawthorne Bee Defeat Litter, the Borough of Hawthorne will be distributing clean-up equipment, free of charge, to the residents who come to the 8 Acre Woods at Maitland Avenue on Sunday, October 5, 2025 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Each person will receive a set of gloves, two (2) plastic bags, and for the first 20 residents, a free grabber to pick up garbage without the need to bend down. Girl Scout Troop #96005 will be participating in our Garbage and Litter Clean-Up Campaign.
To keep everyone apprised of the progress of the clean-up campaign, the Environmental Commission and Green Team are asking you to post your pictures with the Hawthorne Bee flyer on the Hawthorne Environmental Commission/Green Team Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/HawthorneEC/ or send to the or send to the Hawthorne Environmental Commission email HawthorneEC@gmail.com with your name and phone number by Monday, October 6, 2025.
The Hawthorne Bee will be adding a more excitement to the campaign by providing a
little competition to his busy helpers. Show and tell through pictures how many bags of
garbage you collected, and what was the most interesting or unusual piece of trash you
found. Winners will be notified by email.
