QHS Presidents Bulletin - 10.23
Principals Message
Quincy High School Students and Families,
As we are now well into October, we are excited to be “back to school” at Quincy High School. Students and teachers have adjusted to the new schedule, routines have been established, and everyone is digging into curriculum as we continue our pursuit of BEING GREAT! Our all school read, "On the Come Up" has been met with positive feedback as faculty and staff have embraced the challenge of weaving this initiative throughout all content areas.
Please note: quarter one interim progress reports were posted Friday, October 6th live on Aspen and Q1 ends in just two over weeks on November 9th. The last week of the term will be a busy week for us at QHS with no school on November 7th for election day, an early release day on the 8th, and no school on the 10th in honor of Veterans Day.
There are quite a few opportunities to visit QHS as we encourage you to join us whenever possible. Thank you to all those who attended our Parent Info Night on August 31, Back To School Night September 21, College Info Night September 28, and Roll Hats Weekend October 6-7. We very much appreciate the entire QHS community and look forward to seeing you at future events!
As always, your students are at the center of everything we do at Quincy High School and this year we are focusing on our efficiency, effectiveness, and equitable practice (3EP) to maximizing the learning potential of our students.
Thanks for your continued support,
Keith Ford, Principal
Ed Smith, Assistant Principal
Roll Hats Weekend 2023
QHS Roll Hats Weekend 2023 was another great success taking place October 6-7 and showcased many incredible clubs, activities, athletics, and school spirit QHS has to offer. So many to thank who made this weekend possible including parents, teachers, advisors, coaches and most importantly our student leaders! Students Anna McPhillips and Tom Curtin did a wonderful job putting in an unreal effort for their school and their classmates. We look forward to Midnight Madness on its way to kickoff Winter Sports. #rollhats
Half Day Advisory Period - New This Year
During the 2023-2024 school year, QHS has introduced an advisory period into our new schedule. On each Early Release day this year, students will return to their homerooms during the second period of the day for Advisory. The Culture and Climate Committee is providing all homeroom teachers with materials for each of these advisory periods throughout the school year.
Our focus during the October Advisory is on Hispanic Heritage Month and we are excited to offer students and teachers the opportunity to learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month and Hispanic Heroes, both in the world and right here at QHS.
Picture Day and Student IDs
On Thursday, October 26th, Legacy Studios will be back at QHS for student picture retakes and to take photos of any students missed in September. Shortly after this date, students will receive a 23-24 QHS student ID.
All students should carry their QHS Student ID with them at all times and/or have a picture of it on their phone. We will be using the student ID barcode to sign students in and out of school. Previous year's ID barcodes work so if you have your old QHS student ID, please start carrying it now!
Summer Internships
Students Kyrie Blue and Caitlin Fennelly, from the QHS Metal Fabrication program, participated in a summer camp/internship at Cannistraro, one of Boston's largest mechanical contractors. They were very impressed with with both Kyrie and Caitlin!
Quincy High School graduated its first candidates in the MBTA 2023 Intern Transportation Institute (ITI). Viet Phan (2024) and Dynasty Cardoso (2023) were employed at Everett Shops for seven weeks and received additional professional development training, including behind the scenes tours and site visits. Congratulations to Dynasty, Viet and Quincy High School! Thank you to Brendan Cunningham for seeking out this rare opportunity and his work to make it happen for the students.
No Hate Tour Visit - September 29
Quincy High School was thrilled to host an all school assembly on September 29th in the gymnasium for the ASA High School No Hate Tour. The No Hate Tour was a high-energy action sports circuit that visits cities across the United States to promote bullying prevention and positive behavior. The program featured top BMX stars who performed high-energy tricks and spoke to our students about bullying, overcoming obstacles, being an ally, inclusion, and kindness.

QHS Community Service
A reminder that the QPS community service graduation requirement is back for all high school students. Lots of students are turning in awesome community service hours from the summer and the beginning of the school year. QHS students have packed boxes at the Germantown Food Bank, worked at Lincoln Hancock Touch a Truck, assisted at a number of summer camps and programs for kids, helped at the QARI August Moon Festival, and assisted in many other ways. Students, please check your hours on Aspen and make sure that you are on track. If you need help check the google classroom or see Ms. Matthews in D219.
Poetry Club Performs
On Friday, October 20, the Quincy High Poetry Club performed original pieces at Quincy District Court for the court's Cultural Appreciation Week. Many dignitaries were in attendance, including Kimberly S. We would like to thank Associate Probation Officer Scharliea DaRoza for inviting our poets to attend!

QHS Curriculum Highlights - Math Department
After a year of having teachers pilot the Desmos Algebra One curriculum, the Math Department is teaching using Desmos in all CCP and Honors Algebra One courses. This program is designed to put student ideas at its center. Desmos does this by posing problems that invite a variety of approaches before formalizing them. As students learn, teachers have live access to their progress and can easily share and discuss student ideas.
This is a sample slide in which students explore the relationship between linear and exponential functions. We are very excited about this new implementation and students and teachers are loving this new interactive resource!
