Monthly Rebel Update From Superintendent Bonjour

Rebel ReflectionsMonthly Rebel Update From Superintendent Bonjour

Hello Rebels!

My name is Caleb Bonjour, and July 1 was my official start date as the new Superintendent of Rebel Nation! It could not have gotten off to a better start than by celebrating a Rebel win while listening to it on the radio in the car with my wife and kiddos after bringing up our first trailer full this weekend. Our closets have started to add blue, grey, and white, and we are all beyond excited to be Rebels!

It is with sheer joy and great excitement that I hit the ground running on Monday! While I know you're enjoying your summer break, I am eager to get to know all of you as best as possible and dig into the phenomenal things that our district is accomplishing, as well as the areas of need that we can work together to improve.

Please free to reach out to me via email or schedule a time to meet with me. My family and I hope to continue to attend many community activities throughout the summer, and we are looking forward to meeting each of you!

Brief About Me:

Becoming Superintendent at Gladbrook-Reinbeck is a bit of a homecoming for my family and I. When I accepted my position in Maquoketa as Dean of Students, my wife and I always said that if we could ever get back to the Cedar Valley, we would want to because our time living and teaching in the area was absolutely amazing when we were in Grundy Center. I think I speak for all of us when I say our time in the district thus far has us truly feeling HOME, and the outpouring of support and anticipation for us to come has us all on cloud nine!

I started my career in Pella teaching 6th grade math. After teaching and coaching there for three years, my wife and I wanted to get closer to family after welcoming our first child, (Lincoln) and we both accepted positions in the area. I taught a little bit of everything at Grundy Center along with coaching, and Amanda taught and became an instructional coach at Dike-New Hartford. To break into administration, I accepted a Dean of Students position at Maquoketa Middle School and the following year I became Elementary Principal. I did this for three years and then became Midland's Superintendent. I served in that role the past two years and when I saw the posting to become the next Rebel leader, I couldn't pass up the opportunity and am incredibly humbled to be here today.

Amanda, the kids (Lincoln, McKinley, and Madison) and I have been doing all we can to soak up the amazing things that our great communities have to offer thus far! Between the parade and rides at Corn Carnival to the stops at The Milk House on every trip, we have truly come to love getting to know our new home.

In each of the roles and districts I've served in throughout my career, I have been able to have tremendous experiences while always holding fast to my core values of doing what is best for kids. Through the positions I have held, I have been able to do this in a variety of ways from working one on one with students, to ensuring that our staff are having their needs met so that they can meet the needs of our students. I am beyond excited to call Rebel Nation HOME and to do all that I can to ensure that we continue to uphold and improve upon the tremendous tradition of excellence that the Rebel Community showcases.

First Things First

Anytime, I have taken on a leadership role, I have done all that I could to learn as much as possible about those that I will be serving in our community and within our school system.

To do this, I will be enlisting the help of our Rebel Staffulty!

In the coming days, I will be sending out a couple of surveys and will begin analyzing the results as they come in. The first survey will a Questionnaire and Networking Audit. This will let me get to know each staff member, as well as learn more about the great things our district has going for it, along with the areas that are seen as needing the most urgent attention.

The second survey will look at our Organizational Health. I have started to dig deeper into Patrick Lencioni's work about how we can leverage each other more and do the small but important things to ensure that we have the healthiest organization possible. In The Advantage, Lencioni proposes the four disciplines for organizational health and over the next year or two, it is my hope that we can work to embrace these four disciplines and leverage them as a district!

The second survey will let me see where we are at as a district and which areas we can work to improve in to ensure that our organization is strong and healthy!

“Not finance. Not strategy. Not technology. It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare.”
