NJROTC ACCOLADES! NJROTC ACCOLADES!

On Thursday (06.11) morning, Chief Michael Salviati of the Northern New England Chief Petty Officer Association presented cadets Cryric Grunhuvd and Brentley Werner with a check covering the full tuition for the two-week Northeast Navy JROTC Leadership Academy/Sail Training in Newport, Rhode Island. To qualify, these cadets had to meet strenuous physical requirements and earn selection based on their continued outstanding performance in the NJROTC unit at Massabesic High School.

Massabesic High School NJROTC Cadets

Brentley Werner

Brentley Werner is a cadet who has shown consistent growth and dedication to the NJROTC unit. This year, he served as both the Armory Officer and the Color Guard Captain. He received several honors, including the Aptitude, Distinguished Cadet, and Naval Science 2 Outstanding Cadet ribbons, as well as the Military Officers Association of America JROTC Award. Brentley continues to excel as a leader and will take on further responsibilities next year as Operations Officer, Unarmed Drill XO, and returning Color Guard Captain. Additionally, he naturally performs under pressure and is an excellent mentor.

Cyric Grunhuvd

Cyric Grunhuvd has taken the initiative this year to train as the successor to our unit’s Supply Officer (SUPPO). In this new role, he will be responsible for tracking over $50,000 in inventory. His achievements this year include receiving the Aptitude Ribbon, the Naval Science 2 Outstanding Cadet Ribbon, the Participation Ribbon, and the Non-Commissioned Officers Association Award. Additionally, he started the CyberPatriot team for the unit, competes on several athletic teams (both NJROTC and School), and his positive attitude is contagious to his peers.

Northeast Navy JROTC Leadership Academy and Sail Training

The NJROTC Leadership Academy and Sail Training (LA/ST) at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island, is an intensive, two-week summer evolution designed to develop the top-performing cadets from the Northeast region. Often referred to as "N2LAST" (covering Area 1 and 2), the program transforms rising juniors and seniors into highly motivated leaders capable of supervising and training their home units.

Core Training Components

The curriculum is a rigorous blend of academic instruction and hands-on maritime experience:

  • Sail Training: Cadets learn to sail on the Narragansett Bay using Rhodes 19 sailboats, culminating in a regatta during the second week.

  • Leadership & Academics: The program includes approximately 22 leadership classes covering ethics, social etiquette, and management.

  • Military Discipline: Cadets practice close-order drill, sword manual, and platoon command.

  • STEM & Field Skills: Training includes modern technology like drones (STEM) and traditional skills like orienteering.

Daily Routine and Environment

The academy follows a strict military schedule to build self-discipline:

  • Schedule: Days begin with reveille at 0500 for formal physical training (PT) and typically end between 2100 and 2200. To foster teamwork and focus, cadets are not permitted to have electronics (cell phones or watches) during the training.

  • Physical Demands: Cadets average 8–10 miles of walking per day and must pass a formal physical training test (pushups, situps, and a one-mile run).

  • Housing: Cadets live in King Hall, and eat in the Ney Hall Galley alongside active-duty sailors.

Selection and Recognition

Attendance is a significant achievement and often a prerequisite for high-ranking unit leadership positions:

  • Selection: Cadets must be nominated by their Senior Naval Science Instructor and pass a physical fitness screening.

  • Completion: Successful graduates are awarded the silver aiguillette, a braided loop worn on the shoulder of their dress uniform

2025-2026 MASSABESIC HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK 2025-2026 MASSABESIC HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK

Is it too late to buy a yearbook?

No. It is not too late.

Yearbooks can be purchased on jostens.com. This online opportunity will remain open until approximately June 4th; follow the path for Massabesic, Waterboro, High school, yearbook. After this date we can accept money (cash or check) and place the order for anyone who would like to still order a book. The money goes right into the MHS Yearbook account and goes to covering the cost of producing/printing the book.

*Signature booklets will be available to students who have a purchased book recorded. I am able to check a purchase report list, if anyone is not sure.

*Just see/email me. The yearbooks are $90, even.

Will books arrive before school ends?

No, they will arrive at the High School the first week of August. There will be a sign in front of the school signaling they are here. For the past 4 years, our MHS yearbooks have covered the entire year, for the whole school; including all 3 sport seasons, events, academics, etc. through graduation. The last pages are finished the weekend after the graduation ceremonies, and the book goes off to the printers. Not every school has this benefit. They have their senior year recorded thru Fall and Winter only, and then Spring events (PROM, Sports ,Graduation) is from the previous school year. This is where MHS stands out. The Book usually arrives, at the High school, the first full week of August. They are then inspected, counted, and sorted then distributed to families/students.

Expected dates and time for 2026 pick-up:

August 7th-Friday, 8th-Saturday and 9th-Sunday

Friday, August 7th: 3pm-7pm

Saturday, August 8th: 10am-2pm

Sunday, August 9th: 1pm-5pm

*Please contact for questions, or issues: heidifryzlewicz@rsu57.org

SHIFTS IN SCHOOL COUNSELOR CASELOAD SHIFTS IN SCHOOL COUNSELOR CASELOAD

As we shift our focus to the 2026–2027 school year, an important change is occurring in our Guidance Department that we believe will provide a stronger, more cohesive experience for our students.

Starting next school year, our four school counselors will transition to alphabetical caseloads rather than the current grade-level system.

Enhanced Support in Upper Grades: By balancing the caseloads evenly, our counselors will have more dedicated, in-depth time to guide and support students through the critical junior and senior years (college applications, career planning, and post-secondary transitions).

Collaborative Teamwork: An alphabetical structure allows our counseling team to better collaborate, cross-train, and support one another on school-wide initiatives, ensuring no student's needs are missed.

We are confident that this structural shift will maximize the care and attention each student receives. Keep an eye out for a follow-up communication later this summer detailing the specific supports from your individual school counselors.

Alphabetical Counselor Breakdown:

Mrs. Curtis: A-D

Mr. Rodgers: E-K

Mrs. Cryer: L-P

Ms. Kearney: Q-Z
