A Slice of PIEWhere Life and Learning Meet

October 2026 🎃 October 2026 🎃

Volume 17, Issue 2

Happy Halloween!

We hope all of our students and families (who celebrate these occasions) had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a happy Halloween! We really enjoyed seeing and hearing about student and staff costumes this past week. As we move further into the fall season, and adjust to a new timezone, we wish everyone a safe, happy and healthy November. May it be filled with lots of learning and laughter for all of us. 📚

If you have saved calendar events from PIE staff from before the time change, they may be showing up an hour out for the next little while. Teachers will be going with the times decided on over the phone (and hopefully in email or text communications) if there is a discrepancy between the time you decided on and the time the calendar says the meeting will occur. We will be working closely with our IT department to hopefully clear up as quickly as possible any confusion this will cause in the next little while. I hope to have something ready to send to all staff and families tomorrow. 🕑

qathet Principals and Vice Principals: Oct 23rd

The principals and vice principals, along with qSD senior admin, spent the day learning about Navigating Challenging Conversations with Angela Millar from the Justice Institute of BC. The intended learning from this course, as stated in the description, is:

Challenging interpersonal interactions with colleagues and with interested and affected parties can consume significant amounts of energy. In this course, you will learn how to prepare to invite others into a collaborative conflict conversation and how to conduct a structured conflict resolution dialogue. In addition to reflecting on your own patterns of engaging in conflict, you will acquire conflict analysis skills and assess barriers to resolving conflict.

Allan, Ian and I were able to spend time together, in-person, for this session which allowed us to discuss the ways this information might be applicable in our work as PIE principals.

qathet Teachers and CUPE staff: Oct 23rd

Professional Specialist Association Day, or PSA Day, is always held towards the end of October and it is designed to give teachers a chance to attend conferences focused on their practice. A number of PIE teachers attended the BC Educators for Digital Learning (BCEDL) conference where they had the opportunity to learn from Ryan Fahey about how "energy, habits, boundaries, workload, connection, recovery, and productivity all interact to influences how professionals show up each day." They also had the opportunity to learn from our own Trevor Armstrong, who facilitated a roundtable discussion on "Elementary Literacy Benchmarks, Assessment and Intervention". Other options included "Building Community in Brightspace", "Building Smarter Course Documents for an AI Reality", and a session on WCLN updates in "Sciences, English, and Math."

qSD CUPE staff had the opportunity to learn about common medical concerns, understanding behaviour, key district practices, joint information on services, and our clerical staff worked on student information gathering and other MyED processes.

For both BCTF and CUPE members, there is also the ability for personalized professional development on a range of topics related to their practice. ðŸŠī

Truth and Reconciliation - Bowen Island

On October 4, PIE Bowen Island students and staff gathered at the Cape for a meaningful Truth and Reconciliation learning event. The day began with a land acknowledgement and a moment of silence before students rotated through four stations exploring Indigenous knowledge, sustainability, poetry, storytelling, and reflection. Activities included learning about traditional foraging practices, enjoying cedar tea, reading Miya Wears Orange by Wanda John-Kehewin, and creating a collaborative mandala using natural materials. Each layer of the mandala represented an important part of reconciliation, from recognizing Orange Shirt Day and practicing listening and sharing to acknowledging difficult truths and committing to meaningful action. It was a moving opportunity for students and staff to learn together with open hearts and minds.

Secret Path - Comox Valley

Every year on October 17, we recognize Secret Path Week, a time to learn about the story of Chanie Wenjack, a young First Nations boy who died in 1966 while trying to return home after escaping a residential school. Inspired by Chanie’s story, Secret Path by Gord Downie and Jeff Lemire helps raise awareness of the tragic legacy of residential schools and their lasting impacts on Indigenous children, families, and communities. This week provides an opportunity for our students to learn about Canada’s history, reflect on the importance of reconciliation, and consider how we can all contribute to a future built on understanding, respect, and meaningful change.

Yay! They're Back! ðŸĨģ

It is always exciting to have students back in the buildings each new school year. In qathet and the Comox Valley, that happens in early October, once the bustle of getting new families up and running in September has settled down. On the first day back in October, I noticed the rise and fall of sounds and energy as students came together to learn with Rob in the morning and then went out on their walk around the airpark. Even though it was much quieter in the building when they headed out for the walk, the evidence of them having been in the building, and the promise of their soon return, left me feeling grateful for our PIE staff who put so much effort into making the In-person Opportunities safe, meaningful, and an essential community-building opportunity for our students, their families and our staff. I am also grateful to the qathet School District for supporting PIE in providing these opportunities in the communities in which our students live, as much as possible.

Primary - qathet

The primary in-person class in qathet embraced the autumn season with a fun read-aloud! Students enjoyed The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming, a playful story about the changing leaves and the mysteries of fall. It’s a wonderful way to build literacy skills, spark curiosity, and celebrate the beauty of autumn together! 🍂

Intermediate - Comox Valley

This fall there have been many plump piles of golden and russet shapes decorating the grass behind our PIE CV Building. Our Grade 4-6 learners took it upon themselves to gather them in a moment of free play, releasing them to the sky and then eagerly dancing about as they fell back to the earth. This group also engaged with Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox by Danielle Daniel. They then used Maple Leaf outlines to create their own unique foxes. Another fun activity would be to use Maple Leaves and Acrylic Paint for this activity. ðŸĶŠ

Senior - qathet

Senior PIE students in qathet took part in a creative art activity centred on the theme, “We are unique individuals who belong together.” Each student designed a personal puzzle piece to reflect their individual identity, interests, and strengths. When brought together, the pieces formed a complete puzzle, symbolizing how each person contributes something special and valuable to our community. This activity celebrated individuality, connection, and the importance of belonging.

Senior - Comox Valley

Our senior students recently participated in a variety of engaging activities through Destination Imagination (DI), an educational program that encourages creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Through hands-on challenges, students work together to develop innovative solutions, think outside the box, and put their ideas into action. DI helps students build important skills in teamwork, communication, and creative thinking while encouraging them to take risks, learn from mistakes, and approach challenges with confidence. It was wonderful to see our senior students exploring new ideas, working collaboratively, and embracing the opportunity to learn in fun and meaningful ways!

Safety Drills ðŸĶš

This month, we participated in The Great Shakeout on October 15th and Fire Drills in the week of October 26-30th.

It was estimated that 60 million people, worldwide, would participate in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills this year. In BC, more than 500,000 people registered to practise how to “Drop, Cover and Hold On.”

It was a particularly wet day on October 29th when students and staff braved the elements to meet at our designated meeting location while Marnie took attendance! 🚒

Ava - Grade 10

One of our PIE students had an unforgettable adventure this summer, sailing along the west coast of Vancouver Island with SALTS (Sail and Life Training Society)! Read on to hear about their 10-day journey aboard a traditional tall ship, filled with hands-on learning, coastal exploration, and memories that will last a lifetime.

"This August I went on a sailing trip around the west coast of Vancouver Island on a SALTS trip! We got aboard the Pacific Grace, a 108ft wooden tall ship in Port Hardy and took 10 days to get to Victoria Harbour, motoring and sailing in the day, anchoring at night and taking the tender or dories to shore to explore Brooks Peninsula and some beautiful freshwater pools in Barkley Sound.

We would have watches in the day where we would get to steer by compass, listen for distress calls on the radio or be up at the bow watching for logs, whales and other boats. Each watch takes turns with night watch. You have one hour a night up on deck on night watch, listening for the anchor if it drags or watching for distress lights from other boats. When we weren’t on watch we could climb out on the whisker shrouds or up the mast, play cards, help in the galley, or help the bosun sand and varnish parts of the ship.

There would be a class once a day where we learned rules of the water, names of the ship‘s parts and sails, and how to navigate on a paper chart.

It is hard to imagine what this experience was like if you have never done it yourself. After the seasickness wears off, by the third day, and you learn to walk like Jack Sparrow when you are up on deck, the rock of the ship is calming. They were some of the best days of my life!" - Ava

Indigenous Veteran's Day - November 8th Indigenous Veteran's Day - November 8th

Indigenous Veteran's Day is observed on November 8 to honour the Indigenous veterans who served in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and other conflicts. Despite facing discrimination and barriers at home, thousands of First Nations, Inuit, and MÃĐtis people courageously served their communities and country. This day provides an opportunity to recognize their sacrifices, learn about their contributions, and reflect on the importance of honouring Indigenous veterans and their stories as part of Canada’s history.

PIE qathet principal, Ian Landy, has prepared an assembly in recognition of Indigenous Veteran's Day that will go live on Friday, November 6, at 8:00am. Watch for the link in the weekly WAG communications Ian sends out.

Remembrance Day is observed across Canada on November 11 to honour the brave men and women who served and sacrificed their lives in times of war, conflict, and peacekeeping missions. Each year, Canadians gather for ceremonies, observe a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m., and wear poppies as symbols of remembrance and gratitude. This important day encourages us to reflect on the courage and sacrifices of those who served, honour the veterans and active service members who protect our freedoms, and remember the importance of working toward a more peaceful world.

Ian has prepared a Remembrance Day assembly that will go live on Tuesday, November 10th, at 8:00am. Watch for the link in the weekly WAG communications Ian sends out.

Staying Visible in Permanent Daylight Savings Time

With darker mornings and no time change this fall, we encourage our PIE families to stay visible while outside the home. Bright colours and reflective clothing make it easier for drivers to see people (particularly young students who are not as tall as adults) in low-light conditions. Motorists can also help by driving carefully, watching for children who may be waiting, walking, or biking, and following school bus safety rules. Never pass a stopped school bus with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing. 🛑 Thank you for helping keep everyone safe!
