March 4, 2018
Principal's Message
Thanks to all those who came out to last night's auction! Your generosity and support is a crucial part of our school's success and on behalf of all of our staff, thank you, thank you, thank you!!
We have a full week this week at Hearst, including the Alice in Wonderland auditions on Monday and Tuesday after school, our boys basketball game on Tuesday at Deal, the DCPS clearance event on Wednesday, and an all school community meeting on Friday. All events are on the new and improved Bloomz calendar, which now has day, week, and month options for easier viewing.
We have two students to celebrate this week at Hearst. 5th grader Braxton Castle has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a Certificate of Excellence from the 2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, and with a President's Volunteer Service Award. Also, a Hearst 4th grader, Dmitri Brandt, has qualified to compete in the state level competition of the National Geographic Bee which will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018. Congratulations to Braxton and please wish Dima good luck when you see him!
Thank you again for all of your support of Hearst and have a great week!

Sarah Schiers, 1st Grade Teacher
This is my eighth year at Hearst and fifth teaching first grade. I am the part of the most awesome classroom team in the building with Ms.Yvette Gilmore.
I grew up in New Jersey with my amazing parents, married 42 years this fall. Despite being an only child, I was always surrounded by family. My parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and their families all still live close to each other in south Jersey. I have an amazing 3 year old son, Declan Miles. He brightens my world and grays my hair in equal measure. I am a very lucky momma.
I attended The College of New Jersey back when it was still Trenton State College. I started as a biology major but ultimately graduated with a bachelor’s in history and a minor in biochemistry. After college, I worked as a Youth Service Team Leader in an AmeriCorps program devoted to community organizing and education around water quality issues in NJ. Loving the intermix of history and science explored during undergrad, I was lucky enough to be able to continue these studies as a master’s student after AmeriCorps. I attended the Centre for History of Science, Technology, and Medicine at the University of Manchester in northwest England. Although I loved the academic world, I also felt a bit useless after a year of community organizing and teaching and years working with students in aftercare and summer camps. While I tried to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life, I somehow fell into restaurant management for a number of years. I did love learning something new each day and enjoyed training my staff and building relationships but this was certainly not my life’s work. I finally relented to a lifetime of being told I should teach and realized that’s where my true passion lay.
I always say I am so lucky to have found Hearst. While working toward my master’s in education at George Mason University, I learned far more in the classrooms of Hearst as a teaching assistant in Kindergarten. My luck continued when I was hired as a lead teacher and paired with Ms. Boyle in first grade…Go Team Schoyle! I am grateful each day for my incredible coworkers. I love this little school and this community has been amazingly supportive and loving to me. I am forever an Owl. Hoot Hoot!

National School Breakfast Week - March 5th through 9th
Be sure to mark your calendar for National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) next week, March 5th through March 9th! This week serves to:
- Celebrate the benefits of the National School Breakfast Program, and
- Encourage student meal participation
School Breakfast is an extremely valuable service available at no cost to all children attending D.C. Public Schools. You’ve heard the phrase, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Well, it’s true. Breakfast helps children learn. Students who eat breakfast have improved learning and attendance, and reduced behavior problems and tardiness. Breakfast promotes good health. Eating breakfast at school results in fewer visits to the school nurse, improves children’s diets, and helps build healthy habits. Additionally, children who start the day with breakfast are less likely to be overweight. Remember – students can eat free breakfast after the bell. Don’t let your child miss another day. School Breakfast, That’s What’s Up!

ReThread DC Launch
Textiles such as clothing, bed linens, towels, and rags comprise more than five percent of the waste that District residents and businesses send to the landfill. However, most of these items still have plenty of life in them, so the Department of Energy and Environment is hosting ReThread DC on Wednesday, March 14 to teach residents how to repair, reuse, and donate unwanted clothes and textiles.
