GCS Honors the Life and Legacy of Hall of Fame Inductee Betty Farr

Betty Farr, a 2023 GCS Hall of Fame inductee and 1951 graduate of Greenville High School, left a lasting impact on the community. Farr passed away on March 12 at the age of 92. She founded Betty’s School of Dance, became a renowned storyteller across South Carolina and later served as CEO of Greenco after her husband’s passing. She served on numerous nonprofit boards and received many honors, including the Order of the Palmetto in 2003. Her legacy lives on through landmarks such as Grandma Betty’s Farm at the Children’s Museum of the Upstate and the Betty & Judd Farr Music Garden at Unity Park. Information/Action from Board Committees/Liaisons

Advocacy Committee
Mr. Saylors: The committee met today. There has been an ongoing concern related to students with disabilities being recognized within graduation rates. We took this to the state’s Education Oversight Committee (EOC). They have agreed that there should be more value given to the Employability Credential in assessing success rates and the full EOC will consider different means of incorporating the Credential into their metrics. We appreciate the time that the EOC, including Senator Turner from the Greenville delegation, put forth to address this.

Finance Report

The District’s monthly financial statements were presented to the Board of Trustees as an information item.

The meeting adjourned at 6:23 p.m.
