Cluster 3 needs your help!

Cluster 3 is looking for your help, community!

We are still collecting new or gently worn & functional coats (and ski pants!) to support our Coats for Kids collection drive. The drive ends on January 8th. Email Mr. Allegro (andrew.allegro@watertown.k12.ma.us) for collection help or just bring them in!

We are also starting a new drive to support Operation American Soldier by collecting new socks! With the help of the Pvt. Charles Shutt Marine Corp League, we are looking to ship socks to soldiers oversees. Socks are a huge necessary to those fighting for our freedom. Please think of those in need!

We are starting The Outsiders in ELA, studying the Circulatory System in Science, finishing up our skits from the Hinduism story, The Ramayana in Social Studies and starting to dissect Circles in Math.

Have a great start to December! ~~~~~Cluster 3

ELA with Ms. Fitanides & Ms. Gordon

Students have started reading The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton and already it has become an obsession with many of our students! Some have exclaimed that it is the first book they've ever really liked. :-) Others are struggling to stay on pace with the class and not read the whole book in one night! :0

A few things on this topic. We are reading ONE chapter per day/night. Students will be reading some in school but will need to finish the chapter at home. We have post-its to mark places in the book to take notes and kids have a note-sheet where they are recording quotes and analysis throughout the story. Our goal is to finish in time to work on our final creative theme project before the break. Please make sure your children are reading!

I give a one question check each day and these grades are recorded on PowerSchool but not averaged into the grade until we finish the book. It definitely shows trends... kids who are not reading or perhaps understanding what they read (0's) or kids who are reading and really able to show their comprehension (2's).

I've started "MAKE-UP MONDAYS" after school for kids who want to retake the bellwork quizzes or other assessments. If Mondays don't work, they can see me for additional options. Make-ups need to be done within a reasonable amount of time from the date of the original assessment. Grades for major assessments will be entered based on mastery of different standards so the short story assessment, for example, has three different grades for different skills.

One final note, our student teacher, Ms. Gordon, sadly is leaving us on December 16. We have really enjoyed her lessons and support in class and she will be greatly missed by students and faculty!

ELA standards:

-I can read a book on my grade level and show my comprehension.

-I can use reading strategies to notice key details in a story that will help me understand deeper concepts.

-I can identify topics that lead to themes in a story, write theme statements and support them with evidence in a text.

Math with Mr. Casiano

Hello Cluster 3 Families!

We finished our unit on proportional reasoning with an assessment prior to Thanksgiving. We have 4 weeks until winter break and our next unit is focused on circles. In this unit, students explore the relationships between the radius, diameter, circumference, and area of a circle. Students also practice writing and using equations to calculate missing measurements. The first 2 weeks we will focus on Circumference of a Circle (Lessons 1–4 + Practice Day + Quiz). The final 2 weeks we’ll be looking at Section 2: Area of a Circle (Lessons 5–9 + Practice Day and Test)

Here is a link to our Family Resource Information Sheet!

Enjoy the week!

Science with Ms. Smith

Learning Targets:

  • I can identify the main functions of the circulatory system and how it is structured.

  • I can identify the main organs associated with the circulatory system.

  • I can identify how the circulatory system interacts with other body systems.

Last week we finished up the circulatory system, and on Friday we will be discussing the frog. The students will be looking at and identifying the relationships between the digestive system and the circulatory system in humans and in frogs. Next week the students will be doing there own research on one body system, we will be using Book Creator.

Social Studies with Mr. Kirkaldy

Learning Targets:

- I can describe how Prince Siddhartha became the Buddha

- I can explain the central beliefs of Buddhism.

This week we wrapped up skits that highlighted the Hindu values found in the classic epic poem the Ramayana. Next we are starting to read and examine visual sources about the story of how Prince Siddhartha Gautama became the Buddha. Students will be learning about the central beliefs of Buddhism. As a final project, students will create a mock interview with Buddha to demonstrate what they have learned about his life and teachings.
