WLWV Community Update

February 12, 2021

WLWV CommunityUpdateFebruary 12, 2021

Final Change to Meals Program Begins February 22

Some of our youngest students will begin in-person hybrid learning starting Monday, Feb. 22, with older grade levels phasing in through the beginning of March. Because of hybrid learning, our school buses will now be needed to transport students and therefore home delivery of meals will no longer be possible.

There will be no more meal delivery to homes starting Feb. 22. Instead, families can pick up a full week’s worth of meals at one time every Tuesday or Friday. Hot lunch will be provided to students during their in-person learning days. The last day of meal delivery to households will be Friday, Feb. 19.

Meal Pick Up For Students in CDL and the WLWV K12 Online Program

  • Five days’ worth of meals will be available for pickup for all students on Tuesdays and Fridays at all school locations. Meal sets include breakfast and lunch.
  • The pick-up window will be from 11 a.m. – noon.
  • Meals are free for all children age 18 and younger who reside in the district boundary regardless of school attendance.
  • Families can pick up meals from any school location.
  • Families who are currently having meals delivered to their household will receive extra meals for every child during the week of Feb. 15.

Meal Service for Students in Hybrid Learning

  • Hot lunch will be available for all students participating in hybrid learning during days they are learning at school. No ordering is required.
  • Hot lunch will not be served at school on Fridays due to the shortened school day.
  • Only lunch will be served during in-person learning days. There will be no breakfast.
  • Even for students in hybrid learning, families will pick up a week’s worth of meals at any school location for the days students are learning at home. Meal sets include breakfast and lunch.
  • Pick Up Days are every Tuesday and Friday from 11 a.m. – noon.
  • Meals are free for all students.

Technology Reminders for Students Transitioning to Hybrid Learning

These are things that Families/Homes need to know:

  1. We will expect all students to bring their fully-charged Chromebook (or personal device) to school every day that they come. We will also expect them to be taken home each night. Charging/power cords should be kept at home.

  2. We suggest that students carry the device in their backpack. Please take extra precaution if sending any food/beverage to school to ensure that no leaks occur. If you are sending food/beverage to school in the backpack, consider enclosing the chromebook in a ziploc style bag inside the backpack.

  3. If your child has been using a personal computing device this school year, they can bring that to and from school. That is up to you as a family to decide.

  4. If you do not have a Chromebook or other device that you are comfortable transporting to and from school at this point, please submit a tekmee ticket to get directions for arranging for picking one up.

  5. Please make sure that your child can independently log into their device, including remembering their password as well as how to turn the device on. Please practice this with your child if they have generally relied on parental support to do this.

  6. We highly encourage you to keep the device plugged in while at home all the time. This will help ensure that it has adequate charge when brought to school.

  7. Before your child returns to school, it would be wise to "test" the battery capacity. To do so, fully charge it and then use it for a full-day of normal school activities while not plugged in. Watch the power as you do this and connect power when/if the battery gets below 10%. This will provide the best estimate of the device's current battery capacity. If you had to plug it into power before the normal end of the school day, contact the school to arrange for a device swap.

Transition to Hybrid Model Includes 3 Professional Days for Staff

The District has set aside 3 Professional Days to support K-12 teachers and staff in the transition from Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) to the Hybrid Model. These days will include time for teachers and staff to:

  • Participate in 3 trainings on safety protocols including COVID-19 training (aligned to OSHA requirements); each school’s procedures outlined in their Operational Blueprint; and walk-throughs of the facility to solidify the new routines with access, flow and adjusted learning spaces.
  • Set up classrooms to prepare for students’ return.
  • Plan with grade level and department colleagues on the implementation of the Hybrid model including changes with the instructional model, classroom routines and procedures.

These days will be non-school days for students in Comprehensive Distance Learning as teachers and staff need to focus time and attention completely on the safety trainings and the successful transition to the Hybrid Model. The dates of these non-school days will differ for each grade level and have been highlighted below. These changes to instruction do not apply to students in the WLWV K12 Online Program:

  • PRIMARY SCHOOLS: February 17, February 18, February 19
  • MIDDLE SCHOOLS: February 24, February 26, March 5
  • HIGH SCHOOLS: March 3, March 5, March 12

Your principal may provide more information for your school as we approach these training days. Thank you for your partnership as we prepare for Hybrid Learning.
