America - The Land of the Giving and the Home of the Generous

Our great country is unique in many ways. One strength is we do not expect the government to meet every societal need not served by the private sector. This is very different from elsewhere in the developed world. Unlike in much of Europe, for example, America is blessed with a large and thriving nonprofit sector, which includes private hospitals, churches, social services organizations, museums, universities, and private schools such as George Walton Academy. These private, nonprofit organizations, driven by a distinctive mission, provide goods and services to advance the public good. The U.S. nonprofit sector is enormous; it employs 10% of the workforce and accounts for 11% of GDP. It is surprisingly entrepreneurial and agile. It drives remarkable societal progress, funding cutting-edge research, educating children and adults, and caring for the infirm, disadvantaged, and underserved.

Without question, wealthy, democratic countries are much more likely to embrace philanthropy—the financial catalyst for most charities. Capitalism and democracy are a powerful combination, improving our quality of life and the human condition. In America, our citizens recognize that with freedom comes responsibility. They take the initiative to make life better for others, often by volunteering and donating.

Giving Tuesday 2024 was December 3. According to reports, this year the Day of Giving total in this country was up +16% over last year, to a whopping $3.6 billion. What a powerful statement of American generosity!

Philanthropy in our country dwarfs all other countries combined. There is no comparison. America has the finest universities, health care and treatment facilities, research centers, and private schools in the world due largely to the impact of philanthropy.

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:21 (NIV)

This bible verse reminds me of advice from my late father: If you want to know what a person values, look at his calendar and his checkbook. As Pastor Rick Warren reminds us, our heart is wherever we put our time and money.

At this special time of year, I am especially grateful for the benefactors (of both time and money) who have supported GWA over the past fifty-five years. Our school’s successes would not have been possible without literally thousands of parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends who have invested in our school via their sweat equity and donations. We are a better school as a result.

In sum, the United States of America is a stronger country and a better place to live because its citizens understand that government is not always the answer. They take initiative, especially the high calling to serve and to give abundantly - especially when they don’t have to.

Making the Case

Mr. Wilson’s AP Government class participated in a mock trial. Senior Sydney Colson skillfully presented a case about free speech in schools to the Supreme Court. After a rebuttal from defense attorney Audrey Doppelhuer, the students on the Supreme Court reached a verdict allowing free speech in schools as long as the speech does not interrupt the school day.

Learning is Sweet!

To conclude their unit on rational numbers, the students in Mrs. Beam's sixth-grade grade math class engaged in a project to classify rational numbers using a Venn diagram. This activity demonstrated their ability to write and categorize rational numbers, integers, and whole numbers. The students celebrated their hard work by enjoying ice cream sundaes as a special treat.

Learning New Techniques

Middle school art students have been learning the basics of clay. They practiced various techniques and were tasked with constructing a coil and slab vessel. They used scoring, slipping, and blending techniques to construct the pieces. This week they are adding glaze to beautify their vessels. They can't wait to show off the finished projects.

Clay Creatures

Artists in kindergarten and first grade are hard at work using clay to sculpt critters you might run into in the jungle! Kindergarteners learned how to form slabs and coils to create adorable clay turtles. They used the patterns from the bottom of their shoes to give their turtle shell some texture! First graders learned all about making coils and building up with clay in order to form coil pot snakes! They used wooden tools to add texture and patterns to their snake pots. Next, they will let them dry, fire them in the kiln, and add some beautiful glaze to finish them off! These clay pieces and many more will be on display at the jungle-themed art show on March 14!

GWA Grapplers
