The Devil in New York: The Witchcraft Trial of Goody Garlick

Speaker: Tara Rider, Ph.D., Stony Brook University

Sunday, October 19, 2025

2-4pm

Step back into the shadow of colonial New York, where witchcraft and suspicion were the topic of fireside conversations. Decades before Salem became synonymous with witch trials, the small town of East Hampton found itself in the clutches of fear as a woman named Goody Garlick stood trial, accused of consorting with the devil. This talk explores the tangled web of rumor, power, and superstition that ensnared an entire community. Dr. Tara Rider is a senior lecturer at Stony Brook University in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences with a multidisciplinary background in history, marine studies, and sustainability. Her research focuses on how nature, gender, and race are entwined with questions of power, culture, and identity.

Preserving Blue Point's Heritage

Installation of Historic Signs

We are excited to share that two historic signs have now been installed at the base of Blue Point Avenue. One sign celebrates the legacy of Blue Point Oysters, while the other illustrates the history of Five Mile Look through a “then and now” perspective.

Next Steps in Restoration

The upcoming phase will focus on restoring the original fountain that once stood on the grounds of Five Mile Look. The restored fountain will feature the center decoration, recreating its appearance from 1913, the year the hotel first opened.

Ecological Renewal

After the fountain restoration, we will collaborate with the Seatuck National Wildlife Refuge to introduce native plant species to the site, supporting efforts to bring local wildlife back to the area.

We are also looking for volunteers to work on a committee, many which are forming now. We currently have a decorating committee, one for displays, refreshments, advertising, set-up and clean-up. "Back to School" in Blue Point in 1929

These articles first appeared in the Bayport Blue Point Gazette.

They were written by Gene Horton and reprinted here with permission.

September 2006

This was Blue Point's first brick school (BPE). The building was dedicated on Tuesday, October 29, 1929 (which, by coincidence, was the same day as the "Crash" occured on the NY Stock Exchange thus triggering the Great Depression).

The school building contained eight large classrooms, one for each grade level, first grade through eighth grade (there was no Kindergarten then). The school house was designed to accommodate up to 350 children, although only 147 were registered in 1929. The new school cost $175,000.00 to construct. The architect was Wilson Potter of NYC.
