Student Residence Verification (New School Board Policy) Student Residence Verification (New School Board Policy)

The school board approved the following policy in May. This year every family must show proof of residency. The policy and the list of documents that can be used is below. Most documents need to be within the last four weeks. For the 2026–2027 school year, all families will be required to submit residency documentation during registration.

J4010

Policy

Student Residence Verification

[ISBA Code: 4010]

"Residence" for purposes of this policy means the place where an individual has his or her principal and permanent home, at which he or she remains when not called elsewhere for labor, studies, or other temporary purposes. It is the place a person has voluntarily fixed as a permanent habitation for himself or herself with the intent to remain in such place for an indefinite period.

The residence of an unemancipated student follows the parents or a legal guardian who has actual custody of such student. In the event of divorce or separation, the custodial parent's residence determines the student's status unless a court order or written agreement provides otherwise.

If an unemancipated student moves independent of his or her parents, the student shall be considered an Indiana resident upon the basis of a legally appointed guardian's Indiana residence if the student is living with the guardian.

Proof of Indiana residency must be filed at the time of enrollment for every student who is counted for membership purposes and maintained by the school corporation in the student’s file.

The following documents will be considered relevant in evaluating whether a student is a resident of the state of Indiana.

β€’ Bank statements – dated within the last four (4) weeks.

β€’ Utility bills – dated within the last four (4) weeks.

β€’ Current property tax statement.

β€’ Current mortgage statement or lease/rental agreement.

β€’ Voter registration card – Parent or student, if applicable.

β€’ Federal or state income tax returns – most recent tax year.

β€’ Medical bill – dated within the last 30 days.

β€’ Student's tax returns - when emancipation is claimed.

β€’ Letter from verified social services agencies – dated within the last 30 days

At the beginning of the school year, the parents of each student must verify the student's Indiana residency without providing documentation if the residence has not changed. If the residence has changed, parents will be required to provide the appropriate documentation verifying residence within the state of Indiana.

The Superintendent may develop administrative guidelines to implement this policy at the building level.

Breakfast, Lunch and Book Rental

Great News!!

There will not be any book rental fees this year for the state of Indiana.

LSC received a grant that breakfast and lunch will be free for all LSC students.

We still need each family to complete a free and reduced lunch form so we can continue to receive Title I funding to have support staff and supplies for the students.

    • Drive down to the back parking lot. Follow the arrows and someone will be there to help your child out of the car.
    • The cafeteria doors will open at 8:00. Please do not let your child out of the car until an adult is outside directing the flow of traffic.
    • Cars should pull up to the β€œDrop Off” zone as far as possible to allow more than one car to drop off at a time.
    • For safety reasons, students should exit the vehicle on the passenger side ONLY.
    • Please do not pull around another car unless instructed to do so.
    • If you forgot a note, lunch box, etc. Please exit the car rider line and park in a spot on Cason Street in front of Murdock to take care of those issues.
    • After your child is out of the car, you will go back up the hill (same way you came down).
    • To help the flow of traffic, please turn right towards 18th street.
    • If your child is arriving to school after 8:25, PLEASE park in front of Murdock and walk your child to the main doors.
    • The tardy bell rings at 8:30. Students need to be in their classroom by 8:30.
    • Students arriving after 8:30 will be counted as tardy and you will need to sign them in at the main office.

    Morning Walkers:

    • Walkers will enter the main doors. These doors will not open until 8:10.

Pick Up Procedures

  • Focus:

    • Students will go to a designated area after school to wait for FOCUS to start.
    • When you pick up your child from FOCUS, please park in the spaces in front of the building. You will walk up to the building, hit the call button and tell us who you are picking up. We will radio for your child to come to the main lobby. Please have your ID with you, we may ask you for identification purposes. You will also need to sign your child out. There will be a binder in the front office.
    • FOCUS students can be picked up between 4:30-6:00. Please do not pick up before 4:30.

    Afternoon Walkers:

    • Students will have a designated place to go after school. Students that walk towards 18th street a staff member will walk them a short way down the sidewalk so they can carefully pass where the cars are entering and exiting for the car rider line.
    • Do not park on Cason street and walk to the building to pick up your student between 3:15-3:30
    • If you drove to the school to pick up your child, use the car rider line.

    Afternoon Car Rider Procedures:

    • Each family will receive two car tags with a number that is linked to the child(ren) you are picking up. Those tags are for your car visor on the passenger side. Simply attach one with a rubber band or binder clip. If you do not display a green tag you will need to go to the front of the building and go to the office with your ID to receive a car tag and then return to the car line to retrieve your child.
    • When you arrive in your car please enter at the yellow gates and follow the drive. We ask that you not enter this drive until 3:00. A staff member will stop you to verify who you are picking up and will radio ahead so that your child is ready.
    • For safety reasons, have your child enter on the passenger side of the vehicle. DO NOT exit your vehicle to assist your child.
    • As cars approach the student car rider line, a staff member will alert the student by calling his/her number. The student will proceed to the designated boarding area to be dismissed.
    • While students are waiting in the gym, the noise level is to be quiet so each student can hear their number being called. Please help us by reminding your child of this matter.
    • If a student is not ready for any reason, we may ask you to go around the parked cars and re-enter the car rider line. This keeps the flow of traffic moving as well as everyone safe.
    • Keep the car-rider line moving. Do not stop to have a conversation with the car-rider staff. If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, you will need to call the school and set up an appointment or email your child’s teacher.
    • Do not pull around another car unless instructed to do so.
    • To help the flow of traffic, please turn right towards 18th street.
    • For safety reasons, please do not talk on your cell phone while in the car-rider line and in the school zone.
    • If you arrive at school after 3:35, you will need to pick up your child at the front office. Park in the spaces in front of the building. You will walk up to the building, hit the call button and tell us who you are picking up. Please have your ID with you, we may ask you for identification purposes. You will also need to sign your child out. There will be a binder in the front office.

It's My Closet

In December 2005, Jefferson High School opened a store called It’s My Closet. The philosophy behind the store serves to enhance the concept of nurturing the whole child within the LSC mission statement. The store, specializing in gently used clothing, furniture, and household items, is open to all LSC students and their families. All items are given to shoppers at no cost.

The store and donation center are located in portable classrooms behind Durgan School, 18thStreet and Hiatt Drive. Lafayette School Corporation donates the use of the buildings and also pays the utilities. All workers are volunteers; no one is paid for their time or donations.
