Message from Nicole Pease Message from Nicole Pease

Hello DCS families, if I do not send out the newsletter by Friday afternoon, you can be sure it has been a busy week! Our monthly Community Lunch was Friday and it is so lovely to see our students interact with the adults that came. I know it is hard for many families to attend as work conflicts with the time, but is is nice to have those that are able to visit.

Kelly Parker was back at DCS with Wellness this week and she helped students prepare for the annual Turkey Trot. IN class, students have been working on understanding why physical activity is important and what it does for our bodies. Additionally, with Mrs. Parker's support students set a goal for the number of laps they would trot around our lower field. The Turkey Trot was held Friday afternoon, and one of the best parts was hearing how excited students were in considering if they met their goal. There was a lot of cheering too for the winners of the cranberry sauce, stuffing, and turkey. This is an amazing event! Thanks so much to Mrs. Parker for the planning and preparation!

Next week is a short one and will be filled with opportunities to consider what we are thankful for as well as showing caring for others. I hope you and your families have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Below I have included a reminder about the PTO Wreath Fundraiser as well as sharing that DCS is a Toys for Tots donation site. Please mark your calendars for the Lantern Festival on December 6th! Nicole

Grade 3/4/5 Team with Mrs. Quinn and Mrs. Garland Grade 3/4/5 Team with Mrs. Quinn and Mrs. Garland

The third, fourth, and fifth-graders have dedicated time in their classes to focus on what “thankful” means. They have listened to stories and developed strategies to demonstrate what it means to be thankful and thoughtful. For ELA, third-grade students read, listened to, discussed, and wrote about the characteristics of animals, including vertebrates versus invertebrates and warm-blooded versus cold-blooded organisms. They practiced the suffixes -ed and -ing, as well as the prefix un-. At the same time, the 4th & 5th graders read several Thanksgiving-themed texts and focused on making inferences. They also worked on helping verbs in grammar and continuing with ‘r’ controlled vowels, suffixes, and Greek and Latin roots in spelling.

For Math, the third-grade goals of this unit are to fluently add within 1,000 using algorithms based on place value and properties of operations, and to use place value understanding to compose and decompose numbers. In fourth grade, students began Unit 3, which focuses on "Using Operations with Fractions." While the fifth graders are continuing to work on Multiplying and Dividing Fractions.

For Social Studies/Science, third- and fourth-grade students will conduct several experiments focused on erosion, deposition & the water cycle, as well as create a Land & Water Dictionary. While across the hall, the fifth graders are working hard to complete their individual state projects.

Grades 1 and 2 with Mrs. Fletcher Grades 1 and 2 with Mrs. Fletcher

Our first and second graders have been loving our new reading unit, Different Lands, Similar Stories! We’ve been traveling the globe as we learn geography and read fairy tales from around the world. Students compared and contrasted three versions of Cinderella stories—“Cinderella” from France, “The Woman with the Red Shoes” from Egypt, and “Billy Beg” from Ireland—and showed great understanding while completing a triple Venn diagram.

We also explored stories from Europe, Egypt, and even Japan! First graders have been practicing “word chaining” with letter cards to help them understand the magic e, and they just began Unit 3 in math, where they are working on learning facts to 20. Second graders have been focusing upon measurement in math, lots of hands on learning!

Kindergarten with Mrs. Lang Kindergarten with Mrs. Lang

his week in Kindergarten was full of discoveries! We finished up our shape unit by looking closely at how shapes are alike and different. The kids loved using big math words like line, corner, longer, and shorter as they explored and compared shapes all around the classroom.

We wrapped up our Five Senses unit with two amazing role models—Ray Charles and Helen Keller. The children were fascinated by how both of them found creative ways to navigate the world and share their talents despite their disabilities. Remarkable!

Our read-aloud Turkey Trouble had everyone giggling, and the “turkeys in disguise” the children created were wildly imaginative! In honor of Thanksgiving, we also made festive placemats and practiced how to set a table—everyone was very proud of their fancy place settings! And best of all, we can feel something magical happening… our kindergarteners are becoming readers! Their excitement is growing with every book they pick up. Check out our latest pictures here and keep reading!
