PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE - BOARD DISCUSSION OVERVIEW
As part of the district’s long-range financial planning efforts, the Board of Education will continue discussions regarding the possible closure of a school building beginning in the 2027–28 school year during a special meeting to be held on May 26, 2026.
We understand this topic is important to our families, staff, and community, and we are committed to keeping stakeholders informed throughout the process.
Prior Discussion + Decisions
In February, the Board received a recommendation to close an elementary school. Ultimately, the board voted to pursue alternative cost-saving measures to address the budget needs for the 2026–27 school year.
At the same time, district administration recommended that the Board take action no later than October on a possible building closure for 2027–28 as part of the district’s long-term financial planning and enrollment considerations.
Early Planning Considerations
District administration is recommending that the board revisit this decision in June, rather than waiting until later in the fall, to allow for district administration to enter into the school year ahead with additional planning time should any future action be taken.
Earlier discussion and potential decisions give the district the ability to plan responsibly for student, staffing, leadership, attendance boundary, and school community needs well in advance of the 2027–28 school year. Having clarity sooner allows students, families, and staff more time to prepare and plan ahead, helping reduce the stress and disruption that can come with last-minute changes and transitions.
Community Engagement Opportunities
To support transparency and community engagement, the Board will hold a special meeting for public comment on May 26, 2026, before considering any future action related to this recommendation at their regularly scheduled meeting on June 8, 2026.
Patrons who schedule input in advance by the applicable deadline (noted in the graphic below) will be provided 3 minutes on the day of the meeting to share information about the topic directly with the board. We kindly request that all patrons who request to speak at an upcoming meeting please take a moment to review board policy BCBI in advance of attending the meeting so that they know what to expect.
Moving Forward Together
We understand this topic is deeply important to our families, staff, and community, and we recognize that conversations about possible school closures can be emotional and difficult for everyone involved. These discussions affect students, families, staff members, and entire school communities, and the way we speak about one another as Pioneers matters.
Throughout this process, we encourage thoughtful and respectful participation from all stakeholders. Regardless of differing opinions or perspectives, we are all part of the same school community and share the same goal: providing the best possible educational experience for all Pioneer students while ensuring a strong future for our district.
