Safe Walking To and From School Safe Walking To and From School

A Safe Walk to School Starts With a Few Simple Habits

Walking to school is a great way for students to start the day, but staying alert and making safe choices is essential. Families can help by reviewing a few simple pedestrian safety habits with students:

  • Use sidewalks and designated crosswalks whenever possible.

  • Stop, look left, right and left again before crossing—and keep looking while crossing.

  • Make eye contact with drivers and never assume a vehicle will stop.

  • Put phones and headphones away when crossing streets or walking near traffic.

  • Follow crossing guards and traffic signals at all times.

  • Be especially careful around buses and school parking lots, where vehicles may be turning, backing up or stopping unexpectedly.

Drivers also play an important role: slow down, stay alert and watch carefully for students, especially during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.

A few extra seconds of attention can make a big difference.

Approved School Technology: Chromebooks Approved School Technology: Chromebooks

Each student will be assigned a chromebook to use and keep at school. Families are financially responsible if students damage their chromebook.

Financial Responsibility for Chromebooks

Each student is financially responsible for damage or loss to any Chromebook and charger that is checked out to the student. The device is loaned to the student to be used for instructional purposes only and in accordance with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Regulation IGT-RA, User Responsibilities for Computer Systems, Electronic Information, and Network Security. No cost is associated for a student to borrow, possess, or use a Chromebook. A family is only financially responsible when there is avoidable damage to the device. If the device is faulty, there is no charge to the family; however, if the damage is considered avoidable or the device or charger is lost, the family will be charged according to MCPS current parts and replacement costs.

Student Emergency Information Student Emergency Information

Student Emergency Information should be updated through ParentVUE. Each year parents/guardians are required to complete the Annual Verification of Information through the Online Registration portal (in the right corner of your ParentVUE home screen). We highly recommend that you complete this as soon as possible. It is critically important that we have accurate parent contact information on file with the school and system as soon as possible. Here are links to the ParentVUE Support Guide and directions for completing the annual verification of information.

MCPS News MCPS News

New this year: Amplify Desmos Math.

This school year, students in Pre-K through Algebra 1 will use Amplify Desmos Math, MCPS’ new mathematics curriculum. The curriculum is designed to help students not only learn how to do math but also understand why it works and how to use it to solve problems.

Students will explore math through engaging problems, discussion and collaboration, real-world connections, and opportunities to explain their thinking. Teachers will provide support when students need it and enrichment and advanced learning when they are ready for more challenges. The goal is for every student to build strong math skills, deepen their understanding, and grow as a confident and capable math learner.

Families are important partners in that learning. At home, simple questions like “What did you learn in math today?” “How did you figure that out?” or “How do you know your answer makes sense?” can help students strengthen their thinking. Throughout the year, families will also find resources in the Caregiver HUB that explain what students are learning and offer easy ways to support math learning at home.

Title I News

Our school is fortunate to receive supplemental funding through Title I, a federal grant program for schools that serve communities with high numbers of students who are directly certified for free meals. The federal legislation that establishes Title I regulations is known as the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA). ESSA requires Montgomery County Public Schools to inform you that you have the right to request information about the professional licensure qualifications of your child’s teacher, long-term substitute teacher, or paraeducator.

If you wish to request licensure information about your child’s teacher, paraeducator, or
long-term substitute teacher, please submit a written request to the principal at your school. Your written inquiry may include information about the following qualifications:

● Degree status and subject area of licensure.

● State of Maryland licensure status.

● Qualifications of paraeducators or long-term substitute teachers who may be working with your student.

Your request will be forwarded to the Department of Talent Acquisition, and you will receive a written response from that office within thirty (30) business days.

Please contact the principal if you have any questions.

Saturday School Registration Is Now Open

Taught by certified teachers, Saturday School provides Kindergarten through Grade 12 academic support programs in math and English/Language Arts. There are in-person and virtual options. Tutoring begins Sept. 26. Fees increase Sept. 1. Register early!
