Message From Superintendent Leatherwood
🥰A Week of Professional Learning🥰
Dear Coupeville families, neighbors, and friends,
Next Tuesday, September 8, is our first day of school, and we could not be more excited to begin a new year.
Our staff spent this past week in professional learning focused on social emotional learning and collective efficacy. Collective efficacy is the shared belief among a staff that, working together, they can make a real difference for every student. It is not a slogan. It is what happens when teachers, paraeducators, bus drivers, food service staff, office staff, custodians, coaches, and administrators all trust that their combined effort matters and that no one is carrying the work alone. Researchers who study schools have found it to be one of the strongest influences on how well students do.
That belief is also what protects well being. When adults in a building know they are part of a team, the job feels less isolating and more sustainable, and that steadiness carries straight through to our students. Children learn best when the adults around them are supported, connected, and confident. This is why we spent our week on both the social emotional skills our students need and the culture our staff needs in order to teach them well. We used a carabiner as our image for the week, a simple reminder that we clip in to one another and hold together.
I was in our buildings every day this week, welcoming staff back and leading that learning alongside them. On Tuesday evening I also led our Facilities Planning Task Force open house at the elementary school, where families and community members walked the building and learned about the work ahead.
If you missed Tuesday's open house, please do not worry. We are holding another one on Wednesday, September 17, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the elementary school. You will find more information below, and we strongly encourage every family to come, take a look, and give us your input. Decisions about our facilities belong to this whole community, and your voice matters in shaping them.
We cannot wait to welcome back our Wolves and Wolf Pups.
We would also love to see your first day photos. Watch for our post on the Coupeville School District Facebook page and reply with pictures of your children heading off to school. We will share them with the community.
There is excitement in the air, and I am proud to serve the Coupeville School District as superintendent.
Sincerely,
Shannon Leatherwood
Honors at school Board meeting
Congratulations!
At Thursday night's board meeting, the board recognized three staff members whose work goes well beyond what any job description asks of them.
Grace Castle was honored for her dedication to theater at Coupeville Elementary. Grace has spent countless hours working with students to stage full productions at the elementary level, which is an enormous amount of work and not something every district can say it has. Principal Ferguson shared that she has already heard from staff about how much they appreciate Grace's professionalism and her commitment to the arts.
Elizabeth Bitting was recognized for her work as our cross country coach. Elizabeth runs alongside our athletes rather than watching from the sideline, and she brings a positive presence to every practice and every meet. Athletic Director Willie Smith spoke about the many ways she has strengthened our program.
Megan Austin was honored for her work with the Leo's Club. Megan volunteers at community events throughout the year and provides the guidance and support that keeps the club thriving. Principal Cays described the club's contribution across our community and Megan's role in making that happen.
We Need Your Input!
Please provide us with your input
1. We are taking a hard look at our aging facilities and have developed options - not a decision. Information describing what we are considering can be found on our Facilities Planning Task Force page, and there will be real opportunities to ask questions and tell us what you think. You can find a feedback survey and you are invited to a community open house on Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. at the elementary school library.

Transportation News (Repeat)
Dear Coupeville Families,
I want to give you a heads-up about our change to an updated version of the app you use to register for transportation and track your student’s school bus. This summer, our software company listened to suggestions and requests made by users and worked hard to put together a new app called EZ Arrival.
What this means for you:
It combines many of the different features of our previous apps, Bus Quest and EZ A2B, into one streamlined tool.
EZ Arrival still continues to provide real-time bus tracking as before and now provides enhanced proactive parent notifications, added a broad foreign language support, and many other upgraded features.
Best of all, your existing account and settings will work automatically in EZ Arrival; no new registration or additional setup required!
The transition is simple — same login, same password, no re-registration.
Important Notice to Families:
All students who wish to ride a school bus to or from school are required to register for services. Due to the large number of changes to the routes this year, no previous year riders have been rolled over for the coming year. You can register via the EZ Arrival app, visit the Transportation Department page of the District website, or contact the Transportation Department Dispatcher directly.
We have limited space on buses so students needing services must have a regular riding schedule of at least 1-2 times every 2 weeks.
You can find additional information regarding all transportation related services on the newly updated Transportation Department page of the district website.
To download EZ Arrival:
Write down your current login information, if you have one, and then uninstall previous versions of Bus Quest or EZ A2B.
Next search for and download “EZArrival” in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store
Log in with your current EZ A2B username and password — same login, no new account needed.
If you need to create a new account simply follow the few quick steps once you click on the “Create an Account” in the app.
