Spring Testing
Pre ACT Testing Day
This is a reminder regarding upcoming testing date:
April 10, 2024: No School for 11th and 12th grade students. Only 9th and 10th grade students on this day to take the PreACT test.
Forward Exams for 10th Grade
Wisconsin students in grades 3-8, and 10, will be participating in the Forward Exam during the March 20 – April 28 testing window. State assessments, including the Forward Exam, are required by both State (Wis. Stat. § 118.30) and Federal ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) Law.
At SHS, 10th grade students will be taking the Social Studies Forward Exam on Tuesday, April 2 and Wednesday, April 3 in their Social Studies class. There are two social studies sessions, approximately 35 minutes each (however the test is untimed).
Please make sure your child gets a good night of sleep and comes to school prepared with their device and charger.
The Forward Exam tests students in the areas of English language arts (ELA), mathematics in grades 3-8, science in grades 4 and 8, and social studies in grades 4, 8, and 10. One or more subtests may be administered daily during our selected time frame. Students not in school on testing days will be scheduled for a make-up test prior to the close of the testing window.
Click Here for the Forward Exam Information for Families brochure that gives more information about the assessment. The Forward Exam measures the knowledge and skills students should have for their grade-level. Their performance on the assessment will not affect their grades. Please encourage students to take the test seriously and do the best they can. The results of these tests will be used to help school staff make determinations regarding curriculum, placement, and services to best support students.
Students will have opportunities to become familiar with the testing platform, called DRC Insight, during school, however you are also encouraged to log in at home. Click HERE to see the Online Tutorials and Practice Test Items for the Wisconsin Forward Exam.

Family Engagement Opportunities
All Night Grad Party Planning
SHS has an annual tradition of an all-night party for our graduates, organized and hosted by parents. This year the party will be held on the evening of graduation on Friday, May 31st. We need all hands on deck to pull off this celebration! Interested in helping? Here are a few ways:
- Sign up to help set up or help at the event. Please sign up by filling out your info on this form. Our school district is requiring that all volunteers in our buildings pass a two part background check. Once you complete the sign up, you will be sent info for completing the background check. We do want to get a jump on this to complete it so that we are ready to go by the time May comes around, so please sign up asap.
- Join the planning committee if you'd like to help even further. The committee meets at 6pm on the first Wednesday of the month at the SHS Library Conference Room. The next meeting will be Wednesday, April 3rd at 6pm. Parents of underclassmen are encouraged to join the committee to learn more and be able to carry on this tradition. I promise you, you can take on as much as you are comfortable with and it is a great way to mingle with other SHS parents. Connect with Nicky Wilson at nickyw2433@gmail.com and she can assist you with meeting dates.
- Support: Birds Bar will be hosting a meat raffle on April 10th at 6pm. All proceeds go toward the party fund. Save the date to visit Superior DQ on May 1st from 5-8pm and mention the flyer below for a percentage of your purchase to be donated toward the party fund. The more that can be raised, the better experience we can give the students this year, and also start a nest egg for next year.
- Donations: If you know a businesses or individual that would like to make a donation, they can be made directly HERE.
This event is a really awesome tradition that is unique to SHS. Thank you for any way you are able to help this fun and safe way for our students to celebrate!
Teacher Appreciation Week
We will be helping celebrate our SHS teachers and staff during national Teacher Appreciation Week May 6th-10th. We will be putting together a variety of prize baskets for staff to do a drawing during this week. Do you know an individual or a business who would like to donate a prize basket or gift cards to show their appreciation? Contact SHS Family Engagement Coordinator, LeAnn Egnash, at leann.egnash@superior.k12.wi.us for details.
Volunteers
If you plan to help out at Superior High School, please visit the link below and complete the 2 PART process. If you need assistance with the fee associated with the background check, please email leann.egnash@superior.k12.wi.us and she can help you. We do not want this fee to deter you from making a positive difference at our school. You can specify in your application if you want it to include multiple schools within our district. This check is valid for one year from the date it is complete.
"Ask The Expert" Community Event
Educating and bringing awareness to the Spartan community is always at the forefront of the School District of Superior. Continuing the great Hidden In Plain Sight event held earlier this month, Superior is set to host "Ask the Expert: Opioid Awareness in the Spartan Community." This event will welcome a panel consisting of experts from Essentia Health, Vivant Health, Superior Police Department, Douglas County Health & Human Services, and Douglas County District Attorney Mark Fruehauf.
Ask the Expert is a special discussion in which five presenters will speak on the dangers of drug and opioid use. Shortly after, the experts will answer submitted questions from the audience. This event is made possible by the continued support of the Douglas County Drug Prevention Coalition, Essentia Amberwing, Lake Superior Community Health Center, and the School District of Superior Health Services Coordinator. The Discussion event will be live-streamed on the district's YouTube channel.
"Opioid use is a major concern in the Northland and our community," said Jane Larson, Superior High School Social Worker. "We look to educate all our Spartans on the potential dangers of opioid usage. I'm excited to welcome all our panel experts and listen to the questions from our community."
Ask The Expert event will begin on April 4th at Superior High School. A free dinner will be provided in the Commons at 6 p.m. and a panel discussion at 6:30 p.m. Those attending are invited to ask questions during the Q&A-resource table session at 7:30. For more information, please contact Jane Larson by email or phone at 715-394-8720 Ext 41270.

Lionheart Student Assembly
On April 17th, all SHS Students will be gathering for a second fun and exciting visit from The Lionheart Experience.
Specializing in worth-infusing performances and speaking in schools nation-wide, Joe
Vercellino and the Lion Heart Crew create waves in the world of education by placing the
spotlight on identity and worth. Through masterful original music from the city of Detroit
alongside visual-art and a powerful narrative; Joe and The Lion Heart crew show how both
worth and identity are the core influence in everything from school violence, bullying, teen
anxiety/depression all the way to high teacher turnover in schools and issues at home.
Throughout the year, Joe and The Crew travel, speaking and performing in schools and
conferences as The Lion Heart Experience; a school assembly designed to infuse young
people with a sense of self-worth and purpose.
With strong themes of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), mental-health awareness, drug,
alcohol and suicide prevention, The Lion Heart Experience has significant impacts on both
preventing and alleviating teen-anxiety in schools nation-wide.
Get a sneak-peak and further information here.

Contact Ms. Elaine at elaine.holmberg@superior.k12.wi.us with any questions or assistance with attendance needs. Please remember that our school day starts at 7:55am every day, on Wednesdays our day starts at 8:25am.
Summer School
Summer School 2024 is just around the corner! Registration will officially begin on April 15th, and we would love to welcome all our Spartans to a summer of fun! In the meantime, check out the summer school webpage for details! More details will be added as we get closer to summer.
This year, we will host four locations (Cooper, Northern Lights, Superior Middle School, and Superior High School). SHS will begin classes on June 10th, while the rest of the district will start on June 17th.
Along with the many classes offered at our schools, we have partnered with the City of Superior Parks and Recreation Department which offers outdoor playground programs throughout the area. Of course, these programs depend on if the weather cooperates. In preparation for the 2024 season, the Parks and Recreation program is asking our Spartan community to fill out this brief survey for location preferences.
The Summer Playground Program is a weather-dependent program scheduled from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, starting in the middle of June and ending in the middle of August. The program's goal is to provide supervised play and outdoor fun in a safe environment for children ages 5-11 in Superior.
