The Sandy Run Spotlight
November 16, 2025
Principal's Message
Hello Sandy Run Families,
Thank you for another great week at SRMS! Our students are off to a strong start in the second marking period, and it has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they transition into new learning experiences. Students have rotated into their next Allied Arts classes, and our 6th graders are beginning to explore a new world language—an exciting milestone in their middle school journey. Report cards will be posted to Infinite Campus on Wednesday, November 19th by noon.
Important Announcements for the Week:
- Holiday Food Drive: We are continuing our efforts to support local food banks during the holiday season. Please consider sending canned goods or holiday meal items to school with your child. On Tuesday, any student who donates a food item will receive a homework pass. Thank you for your generosity and support—your contributions truly make a difference.
- SRMS Turkey Trot: We are excited to host our annual SRMS Turkey Trot! Students have been preparing in Health/PE class by practicing the mile run. Students may sign up in class for $5.00 to participate in the race on Tuesday, November 25th. This is always a highlight of the season, and we welcome parent volunteers to help make the day special. Please consider signing up to volunteer your time or donate items.

Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead. Go Birds! 🦅
Warmly,
Jennifer Nuskey
Principal, Sandy Run Middle School

American Education Week Sponsored by our SRMS PTO!
This week, we celebrate the incredible staff of Sandy Run who show up every day with dedication, compassion, and a commitment to helping our students grow. Our SRMS value for November is gratitude. In the spirit of gratitude—and in recognition of American Education Week—please take a moment, if you are able, to fill out our SRMS Staff Gratitude Form to share a message of appreciation for any member of the Sandy Run staff. 💡LEARNING HIGHLIGHTS
8th Grade ELA~Two-Pager Assignment
Students in Karen Miller’s 8th grade ELA classes wrapped up the fall with a vibrant celebration showcasing their hard work and creativity. Each student presented a two-pager highlighting their independent reading book of choice—an opportunity to blend analytical thinking, visual design, and personal reflection.
The event served as a powerful way for students to introduce their peers to a wide range of books and genres, sparking curiosity and building a stronger reading community. As students rotated around the room for 1:1 book conversations, the discussions that emerged were rich, thoughtful, and authentic—rivaling the best of adult book clubs.
6th Grade Science & Makerspace Partnership
Students in our 6th grade science classes recently stepped into the roles of doctors and biomedical engineers during a hands-on activity designed to deepen their understanding of human body systems. Teachers Mike Nelms, Daveda Henegan, and Tina Tofel partnered with our librarian, Sam Connelly, to bring this experience to life.
Using patient case files, students worked to diagnose various conditions, identify the body systems involved, and cite evidence to support their conclusions. They then brainstormed solutions to support treatment, prevention, or potential cures. To cap off the experience, students headed to the Maker Space, where they created prototypes of their innovative designs.
