Special Note:

Hello, October!

What a wonderful start to the school year it has been! As we head into October, we are excited for another month filled with learning, growing, and making memories together as a Country Lane family.

This month brings many exciting opportunities for our Tigers, including special classroom experiences, school events, and Fall Break from October 14th–16th. We hope this break gives our students and families a chance to rest, recharge, and enjoy some time together.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for being such an important part of our Country Lane family. We are so proud of our Tigers and all they are accomplishing each day!

Here’s to another great month at Country Lane!

With Tiger Pride,

School Wide Goal School Wide Goal

At Country Lane Primary, our goal this year is to ensure every student has access to strong, high-quality Tier 1 instruction—the grade-level instruction students receive in their classrooms each day. While our teachers work to meet students where they are through small groups, interventions, and other targeted supports, they are also intentionally providing strong, content-driven whole-group lessons that give every student access to grade-level learning.

Our goal is to protect this important instructional time and make sure it is used effectively. Our teachers are being intentional with instruction, and our leadership team is being strategic with scheduling to help protect this time for learning.

Families can help us support this goal by helping students arrive on time, attend school regularly, and avoid early checkouts whenever possible. Together, we can protect valuable instructional time and ensure every student has the opportunity to learn and grow each day.

Supporting Our Goal Beyond the Classroom

Another way to support these efforts is by building strong literacy habits at home. We know many of our families are wondering how they can help their students grow as readers, and one of the greatest tools is simply making reading a part of everyday life. Check out the article below for strategies to support your child and encourage a love of reading at home.

🍂 October with the School Counselor

October is here, and I’m excited to continue building social - emotional skills with our students! In September, we focused on some important skills that help children understand themselves, handle challenges, and communicate with others.

🌟 What We Learned in September

Kindergarten- Color Monster Feelings
Our kindergarteners learned about different feelings and how to recognize and name them. We talked about how all feelings are okay, even though we may not always like how a feeling feels. Students practiced identifying feelings in themselves and others and discussed healthy ways to express and manage big emotions.

1st Grade – Bubble Gum Brain & Brick Brain
First graders learned about having a “Bubble Gum Brain”—a brain that can stretch, learn, try new things, and grow! We talked about the difference between a “stuck” mindset and a growth mindset and practiced using encouraging phrases such as, “I can’t do it YET!” and “I can try a different way.”

2nd Grade – Size of Problems & I-Messages
Second graders learned that problems can come in different sizes and that our reactions should match the size of the problem. We also practiced using I-Messages to communicate feelings and needs respectfully.

Students learned the format: “I feel ___ when ____. Can you please___?”

🏡 How Can You Help at Home?

You can help reinforce these skills through everyday conversations and situations:

  • Name feelings: When your child is experiencing an emotion, help them put a name to it: “It looks like you’re feeling frustrated. Does that sound right?”
  • Encourage a Bubble Gum Brain: When your child says, “I can’t do this,” try responding with, “You can’t do it YET! What could you try next?” Celebrate effort, persistence, and trying a new strategy—not just getting the answer right.
  • Talk about problem sizes: Ask, “Is this a small, medium, or big problem?” Then discuss what reaction would match the size of the problem. This can help children practice staying calm and problem-solving before emotions take over.
  • Practice I-Messages: Encourage your child to use “I feel…” statements when they are upset with a sibling, friend, or family member. You can model this yourself in everyday situations.
  • Model the skills: Children learn so much by watching the adults around them. Let them hear you name your feelings, work through a frustrating moment, try again when something is difficult, and communicate your needs respectfully.

Thank you for partnering with me as we help our students develop the social-emotional skills they need to grow, learn, and build positive relationships. I’m looking forward to a wonderful October! 🍁
