York High School Weekly Memo

Some thoughts for the starting school year

York High SchoolWeekly MemoSome thoughts for the starting school year

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are having a wonderful week. November is one of those months that flies by due to the holidays, so we are already into week one of Quarter 2. Midterms and final exams will be here before we know it (January). We look forward to seeing you and your student this evening for our first round of Parent-Teacher Conferences. There's still time to sign up for next Thursday's conferences.

York Robotics did great at their first tournament of the season, held at Scarborough High School last week. All eight of our teams advanced to the elimination rounds — an impressive accomplishment for the first event of the year. Even more exciting, two of our teams brought home judged awards:

  • Team 5156G “Bagel Bytes” – Isaac Wheeler ('28), Ned Spaulding ('28), Gabe LeBlanc ('28), and Ben Cipoletti ('28) – received the Innovate Award for documenting and implementing a unique design element that was key to their robot’s success in both design and gameplay.

  • Team 5156E “Snap. Crackle. Bot.” – Tim Eager ('28), Willow Staley ('28), Cooper Woods ('30), and Andrew Meader ('30) – earned the Halloween Costume Award for their creative “Cereal Killers” team theme.

It was a great start to the season, and the students represented York Robotics with enthusiasm, teamwork, and professionalism throughout the day.

Last week, we had our first "Wildcat Walk" throughout the building to support and encourage our student-athletes who were competing in state championships over the weekend. We look forward to continuing this new tradition each season. It was great to see our student body and staff cheering for their classmates as they celebrated their awesome accomplishments.

Enjoy the rest of your week. If you have any questions or need anything, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Thanks,

Amanda

A Reminder about Personal Devices

This morning, during Block 2, all of our students were told the following information regarding our district’s Electronic Communication Devices Policy, JICJ. Please help us by following district policy and remind your students about this.

As you know, this policy was updated over the summer with revised language regarding cell phone use in schools. District policy prohibits the use of any electronic device with internet or cellular network connectivity that receives notifications. While you’re all familiar with our expectations around cell phones - and doing a great job following them - this policy also applies to personal laptops. Students are not permitted to use personal laptops at any district school, including York High School. Students should only use school-issued devices.

Beyond communication concerns, this update is also an important step in strengthening our district’s cybersecurity and maintaining our cyber liability insurance coverage. Our goal is to ensure a safer, more secure digital environment for students and staff by protecting sensitive data and essential instructional tools from growing cyber threats.

To review - personal laptops are not permitted at school, effective immediately. If you have your personal laptop with you today, please put it away. Teachers have been asked to collect personal laptops if they are visible, following the same procedures as with cell phones, and any consequences will be handled through the main office. This is not a change in expectations, but a clarification to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Moving forward, please leave personal laptops at home.

York High School is proud to recognize senior Nya Avery as our Seacoast Student of the Week. Both teachers and coaches commend Nya for her ingrained work ethic, which is contagious to all. One teacher remarked, “Nya is the epitome of a growth mindset; she seeks out challenges to learn and grow in every aspect of her academic and athletic life.” Another noted, “She is easily one of the nicest, most mature, and hardworking students I’ve ever met.”

A true standout both in the classroom and on the field, Nya excels in several Advanced Placement courses while shining as a multi-sport athlete in field hockey, basketball, and softball. Beyond her impressive academic and athletic commitments, she also serves as a leader for TIDALWAVSE (Teens In Drug Awareness Leading Working And Valuing Self Esteem) and is a proud member of the National Honor Society.

Her talents extend into the creative arts as well. Visual Arts teacher, David Shenett, shares, “Nya works tirelessly on her projects, devoting hours of focused effort and making it all seem effortless. She has tremendous talent and a distinct artistic style, especially in her drawing and painting work.”

York High School is honored to celebrate Nya’s many accomplishments and the integrity, kindness, and determination she models each day. We can’t wait to see where her talent and drive take her next.

Parent-Teacher Conferences Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held tonight and next Thursday, November 13, with teachers being available between 2:30-7:00. This time is another way for you to get feedback about your student’s learning, aside from PowerSchool. Log in to our online scheduling platform, PTC Wizard, to schedule conferences. You can begin scheduling today and will be able to schedule until 2:00 the day before.

Key points regarding conferences:

  • Conferences are set for 12 minutes each.

  • Students are expected to attend with parents, as they are critical participants in their learning.

  • Conferences will be held in person. If you need an alternative accommodation, please reach out directly to the teacher.

I strongly encourage you to reach out to school personnel anytime, not just at conferences. Staff are always available by email, and would be happy to talk via phone call or meet in person at a mutually agreed-upon time as well.

If you have any questions regarding PTC Wizard or signing up for conferences, please reach out to Stephanie DeMartini -- sdemartini@yorkschools.org

College Rep Visits

Sometimes, the reps you meet with are the same admission counselors who will be reviewing your application!

There are many colleges and universities visiting, so be sure to check out all the available slots in Naviance. For virtual visits, it's important to be in a quiet space so you can have a clear conversation.

Juniors and seniors can sign up and reserve their spot through Naviance by clicking on the "What's new" window on your Naviance home page. If you need a quiet place to participate, please let Student Services know ahead of time. If you have any questions, please reach out to us in Student Services.
