Dear Hirsch Hawk Parents and Guardians,

As we enter a new week of learning and discovery, I want to share some important updates and exciting celebrations happening at Hirsch Elementary.

Benchmark Assessments This Week

This week, our students will participate in important assessments designed to evaluate their learning and guide future instruction. Here's what you need to know:

  • Kindergarten through 2nd Grade: Students will take benchmark assessments that cover content they’ve learned since the beginning of the school year. These benchmarks help teachers understand how well students are mastering essential skills and concepts and determine any areas where additional support may be needed.
  • 3rd through 5th Grade: Students will take the Interim Assessment, developed by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). This assessment serves as a practice STAAR exam, providing valuable insight into how well students are prepared for the upcoming state assessment.

Unlike the MAP and mClass assessments students took in December, which measure growth and specific literacy or math skills, these benchmarks and interim assessments focus on mastery of grade-level content and readiness for state testing. Teachers will use the results to gauge the effectiveness of their instruction and plan next steps to ensure all students continue to grow and succeed.

Please ensure your child gets plenty of rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and arrives on time each day to set them up for success during testing.

Celebrating Black History Month

February marks the beginning of Black History Month, and at Hirsch Elementary, we recognize the importance of celebrating the rich diversity that makes our school community so special. This month, students will engage in meaningful lessons, discussions, and activities that highlight the contributions of Black leaders, innovators, and changemakers throughout history.

Here are a few fun ways you can celebrate with your family:

  • Read Together: Check out books that celebrate Black stories and authors. Titles like Mae Among the Stars by Roda Ahmed or Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly (Young Readers’ Edition) are wonderful choices.
  • Music Exploration: Listen to music by iconic Black artists and discuss how their work has influenced music today.
  • Local Events: Attend cultural events in our community to celebrate and learn more about Black history and culture.

At Hirsch, we believe Black History is a part of American History, and we are better when we honor and celebrate the diverse stories that shape who we are.

Thank you for your partnership in your child's education and for supporting the inclusive culture we strive to build every day.

Wishing you a wonderful and inspiring week ahead!

Warm regards,
Principal Patterson

Don't forget that Parent-Teacher Conferences are on Friday, February 14. This is a student holiday, but teachers will be on campus, ready to meet with you to discuss your child’s progress. Please reach out to your child’s teacher via Class Dojo or email to schedule a time for an in-person or virtual conference.

Celebrating Ms. Fuentes for Counselor Appreciation Week!

This week, we celebrate the heart and soul of student support at Hirsch Elementary—our incredible counselor, Ms. Fuentes! Her unwavering dedication to our students, families, and staff is truly inspiring. Whether guiding students through challenges, supporting teachers with social-emotional learning strategies, or ensuring our campus is a positive and welcoming environment, Ms. Fuentes does it all with compassion and grace.

We are so grateful for her efforts to empower every student to SOAR, and this week is the perfect time to show our appreciation for all she does.
