JANUARY 2026
A few words from Mrs. Guillory...
Welcome to a brand-new semester—a fresh start and a brand-new chance to shine! This is the perfect time to set goals, try your best, and believe in yourselves. As we move forward, we’ll also begin getting ready for our state test. This is your moment to show off all the hard work and learning you’ve done, and we know you’re up for the challenge!
As we work hard and push ourselves, let’s remember one very important thing: kindness matters. Smile at someone new, encourage your classmates, and treat everyone with respect. A positive attitude and a kind heart can make a big difference.
Let’s bring energy, effort, and kindness into every day and make this semester the best one yet!

FEATURE STORY
Making a Comeback
Braelyn Hebert, one of Moss Bluff Middle School's 8th graders, is the definition of perseverance and inspiration to work through hard times.
Like most teenagers, Braelyn was very active; she participated in gymnastics and even had 25 foot rope climb named after her; the "Braelyn's Monkey Climb", where she climbs the rope upside down with her feet! There were no indications that something was wrong until our school nurse, Nurse Renee McCall, did the school's annual scoliosis screening in February 2024.
Her mother recalls this screening result as a "shock" as X-rays showed that Braelyn didn't just have one curve in her spine, but two! Surgery is required for curves at a 40 degree angle, and both Braelyn's curves were at 50 degrees and surgery was scheduled for May.
“I was very scared and very, very anxious because I didn’t know if I was going to be OK, but I also knew that I was going to be OK. I was overthinking it, and I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll be fine, but also, ‘What if something happens?’ ”
Three months after surgery, Braelyn was back at gymnastics and even made MBMS Cheer, but it didn't come without a few lessons, hard work, and determination along the way.
Braelyn and her mom can't recommend getting screened enough and have some advice for those who may find that further tests may be needed.
“Stay strong." “Don’t be too afraid. Don’t overthink it. You are more capable of doing this than you might think.

New Year's Resolutions by Charlee Hagan
The celebration of the New Year has come and gone, and I would love to say that I'm a new person. But...I'm still me, but there are others around campus, in my family, my friend group, and in my neighborhood that have changed-all thanks to New Year Resolutions. Did you make any Resolutions for the new year? Have you stuck with them? It's ok if you didn't, a lot of people don't, but let's hear it-Resolution or Not? Because you are already pretty fabulous as you are 😉
Did you make a New Year's Resolution for this year?

🥎 Interview with Coach Adams 🥎
What inspired you to become a coach, and how long have you been coaching at our school?
•I was never originally inspired to become a coach. About ten years ago, our school’s softball team needed a sponsor, or the program would have been shut down. I didn’t want to see the softball program end, especially given how successful the high school team was, so I stepped in.
What do you think makes a successful athlete, both on and off the field?
•A successful athlete is someone who works hard, stays disciplined, and is willing to learn from both success and failure. On the field, that means showing effort, being coachable, and supporting teammates. Off the field, it means managing time well, maintaining good character, respecting others, and taking responsibility for academics and personal choices. The best athletes understand that how they act off the field is just as important as how they perform on it. Every member of our team, including the coaching staff, is considered part of our 1% Club. The 1% Club represents our commitment to becoming 1% better each day—both on the field and in the classroom. Over the course of a season, and throughout your softball journey, those small daily improvements add up and help you become a better athlete and a better person. The graph below illustrates how improving by just 1% each day can lead to exponential growth.
How do you motivate your team during challenging games or seasons?
•We believe most of our team’s motivation comes from the preparation we put in during practice. We intentionally place players in challenging situations so that, when game time comes, winning habits become second nature. That preparation helps build confidence and makes tough games feel more manageable.
Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your coaching career here?
•Any achievements throughout my coaching career are a direct result of the dedicated, hardworking players who put in the effort every single day, as well as the fellow coaches who have volunteered their time over the years to support the softball players of our small town of Moss Bluff, Louisiana. It is truly an honor to stand on the sidelines and witness each player’s growth, from the beginning of their sixth-grade year through the end of their eighth-grade career. Many of those athletes I have stayed in touch with and continued to follow throughout high school and even into Division I college softball.
What advice would you give to students who want to join your team?
•Never give up on working toward your dreams each day. Achieving your goals takes hard work, but don’t let the challenges or effort discourage you from pursuing what you want. Stay committed, trust the process, and keep pushing forward.
How do you balance academics and athletics for your student-athletes?
•Academics ALWAYS comes first. There is a reason it is called a "student athlete" because being a great student must come first.
