FOCUS Care Coordination Program Launches at Southwest School Corporation
The Southwest School Corporation is launching the FOCUS Program, an evidence-based initiative funded by a $902,000 grant from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute's 2025-2027 Juvenile Behavioral Health Competitive Grant Pilot Program.
This program aims to support students with moderate behavioral health needs by providing early intervention, connecting families with community resources, reducing disciplinary issues, offering wraparound services, and strengthening family involvement. Implementation will occur in two phases: Year 1 (April 2025 – March 2026) focuses on staff recruitment and training, partnership establishment, and service launch; Year 2 (April 2026 – March 2027) emphasizes service expansion, summer program development, and sustainability assessment.
The program is currently hiring a Care Plan Supervisor and Care Plan Coordinators, with applications due by Friday, April 11, 2025. For more information, contact Samantha Phegley at sphegley@swest.k12.in.us.

Integrating Career Exploration in Elementary Education
On March 20th, Southwest School Corporation 3rd through 5th grade students were introduced to a wide variety of jobs and careers in a fun, engaging, and age-appropriate way . Integrating career exploration activities, such as career fairs, into elementary education lays a foundational framework that aligns with Indiana's Graduation Pathways requirements. These early experiences introduce students to various professions, fostering an understanding of the skills and knowledge associated with different careers. This early exposure supports the development of Employability Skills, a key component of the Graduation Pathways.
The Graduation Pathways initiative in Indiana comprises three main requirements:
-
High School Diploma: Completion of the required coursework for a diploma.
-
Learn and Demonstrate Employability Skills: Engagement in experiences that cultivate essential skills through Project-Based Learning (PBL), Service-Based Learning (SBL), or Work-Based Learning (WBL).
-
Postsecondary-Ready Competencies: Achievement of specific academic or technical benchmarks to demonstrate readiness for college or career pursuits.
By participating in career fairs and related activities during elementary school, students begin to develop the foundational skills and awareness necessary for future Project-Based Learning experiences. These early engagements encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, which are essential for PBL projects in later grades. As students progress through their education, the early exposure to various careers and the understanding of associated skills can enhance their readiness to meet the Employability Skills requirement of the Graduation Pathways.

National Honor Society Induction at SHS
Senior NHS Members
Junior NHS Members
Sophomore NHS Members
The National Honor Society (NHS) is a prestigious organization that recognizes high school students who exemplify excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, and character—the four pillars upon which NHS is founded. Established in 1921, NHS has grown to include over 17,000 chapters across the United States and internationally, engaging more than 1.4 million students.
Membership Criteria:
To be eligible for NHS, students typically must:
-
Scholarship: Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or an 85% average). However, individual school chapters may set higher GPA requirements.
-
Service: Demonstrate a commitment to community service through voluntary contributions to the school or community without compensation.
-
Leadership: Exhibit leadership qualities such as resourcefulness, problem-solving abilities, and being an active contributor to ideas. Leadership roles can be within the school or the broader community.
-
Character: Uphold high standards of honesty, reliability, courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and maintain a clean disciplinary record
It's important to note that while these are the national minimum standards, local chapters in Indiana may have additional or more stringent criteria. For instance, The Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities requires a minimum GPA of 3.80 and specific community service hours for membership consideration.
Benefits of Membership:
Joining NHS offers numerous advantages, including:
-
Scholarships: Access to the NHS Scholarship Program, which awards over $2 million annually to outstanding members.
-
Leadership Development: Opportunities to participate in leadership events and conferences, such as the Leadership Experience and Development (LEAD) Conferences.
-
Community Engagement: Involvement in meaningful service projects that positively impact schools and communities.
-
College Preparation: Enhancement of college applications by showcasing a commitment to the four pillars of NHS.
