Superintendent's Message Violet Nichols

November 2, 2023 November 2, 2023

It’s hard to believe we are already two months into the school year! Thanksgiving is just around the corner, but first, Daylight Savings Time ends this Sunday, so don’t forget to turn your clocks back!

Congratulations to the SB Wolves for their big semifinal wins this week! The Girls Field Hockey team, Boys Soccer team, and Boys Volleyball team all have Championship games this weekend and the Girls Cross Country team is heading to Maine for the New England Championships next weekend. Field Hockey is Saturday at 10 am at UVM, Volleyball is Sunday at 3 pm at St. Michael’s and Soccer is 7 pm at UVM. GO WOLVES! Our pack is strong!

Our Climate Action Committee recently met to discuss how our district can decrease its environmental impact. We have a developing Climate Action Plan that catalogs all the initiatives we have already engaged in, including our ebuses, Zero Energy Modulars, and print reduction. The committee includes members from across the community, including the school board, teachers, students, family members, city council members, and other staff.

Last week, School Board Member Laura Williams and I attended the Vermont School Boards Association Annual Fall Conference whose theme was Supporting Student Success Through School District Governance.

Last night, the School Board chose a new member, Tim Warren, who will attend their first board meeting on November 15th. Warren is a native of Vermont and has lived in South Burlington for 25 years. He attended the University of Vermont and was a paraeducator at South Burlington High School. Currently, he is Lead Instructional Designer at GE Healthcare, where he has been since 2006. He has three children who have had their entire education in the South Burlington School District. Warren regularly attends board meetings and engages with the board frequently. He already received a warm welcome from the board and they look forward to giving him a robust onboarding as they hit the ground running.

Thank you to Erin Sutherland and Wendell Coleman for applying and interviewing for the board seat as well. I know it was a difficult decision for the board as you are both valuable members of the community who have lent your voices and knowledge to the district in myriad ways. I look forward to continuing to work with both of you.

Now that the board is whole and we head into budget season, they will continue their governance training and work towards assuring the district is meeting our ENDS policies.

And speaking of our budget, at our administrative meeting this week, we continued conversations about the specific needs within the schools, which included a student-teacher committee presenting recommendations for devices to best meet student needs. And yes, that is our student Board Representative, Rama AL Namee sharing her findings.

Budget Feedback: Survey, Community Forum, Donuts and Discussion Budget Feedback: Survey, Community Forum, Donuts and Discussion

We are eager to hear the community’s priorities for the upcoming year. Earlier this week, we shared our Equitable Budgeting Feedback Survey. Please take a moment to fill this out to share your ideas on making our system more equitable, as defined by our ENDs and Equity Policy.

In addition, we are holding a Community Forum on Monday, November 6th from 6-7:30 pm at 577 Dorset Street or you can attend via Zoom. We look forward to hearing your thoughts!

There will also be a budget-focused Donuts and Discussion on Friday, December 1st at 9-10 am at 577 Dorset Street (no virtual option).

All FY25 budget information can be found at www.sbschools.net/budget.

Staff Spotlight: Tim Jarvis Staff Spotlight: Tim Jarvis

This week’s staff spotlight is Tim Jarvis, Senior Director of Finance and Operations. Tim is a special spotlight for me to showcase because he exemplifies what it is to be a thriving, community-minded SBSD graduate; attributes I wish for all of our graduates. A graduate of RMCS, FHTMS, and SBHS, Tim exemplifies our District ENDs through his successful career in finance, connection to our community, and now service to the District in his current role. ENDs Policy 1.1 is Disposition for Lifelong Learning, after a most successful career in corporate finance, Tim has, overnight, adapted his skills and knowledge to propel his beloved alma mater forward through shepherding our budget, bond, ZEMs project, transportation department, and school safety initiatives, just to name a few of his projects. ENDs policy 1.2, Academic Proficiency; well, he went to Dartmouth, need I say more?! 1.3, Personal Development: Tim has long-standing personal relationships with many in our community that span decades. He was close with beloved football coach Paul Jordan and is now forging relationships with community partners to move forward a Climate Action Plan, Safe Routes to School programs, and electric buses. 1.4, Citizenship: “being proud of our shared experience and having fun along the way.” There is no graduate that I know who is more proud of their time at SBHS, from being captain of the football team to being childhood friends with our business manager’s sister, to attending prom with an employee who shall remain unnamed! Tim is honest, humble, and always has good humor, 1.4.2 in a nutshell. So, here’s to one official year (November 7th) of one of our very own graduates leading incredible progress each day in our exceptional District. Thank you, Tim!

Student Spotlight: SBHS student Patrick Richardson Student Spotlight: SBHS student Patrick Richardson

Patrick Richardson is a student in the high school’s Transition Academy. Patrick, who is neurodiverse, also runs cross country for the SB Wolves. This past weekend at the JV State Championships at Thetford, Patrick ran his personal best, taking 40 minutes off his previous time! An enormous accomplishment and we are all exceedingly proud of you. Congratulations Patrick! We look forward to seeing what you do next!

He is also up for Burlington Free Press’s Athlete of the Week! You can vote for him here.

School Safety School Safety

Last week, City Manager Jessie Baker sent out this letter to the community outlining what the City has done to improve safety near our schools. We have made progress with the temporary Traffic Monitor at Rick Marcotte who will stay throughout construction at Catamount Run, as well as the four-way stop at Marcotte, which is now a school zone. There is also a school zone at Chamberlin that has been underway. We look forward to seeing the data from a Dorset Street study and have requested that costs associated with school zone be included in the City’s FY25 budget. We hope to partner with the City to get school zones, traffic monitors and safer lighting implemented at all our schools. There is nothing more important to the safety of our students!

There are a few last pieces to be finalized at RMCS including finishing some landscaping and adding a railing, but with that project complete, it is all hands on deck at Orchard to finish there within the next few weeks.

The roofers are finishing up, gutters are being installed, and exterior and interior painting is beginning. Cabinetry and flooring are being placed in the classrooms, IT and electricians have been on site, and landscaping has begun. The final walkthrough is scheduled to take place on Friday, November 17th before the Thanksgiving Recess and then students should be able to move in the week they return. More information will come soon about our planned Grand Opening at Orchard.
