School Readiness Tip: Concepts of Print School Readiness Tip: Concepts of Print

How Can You Increase Your Child's Concept of Print?

Core Elements of Concepts of Print:

  • Book Handling: Knowing how to hold a book correctly, identifying the front and back covers and turning pages one by one.
  • Directionality: Understanding that English text is read from left to right and top to bottom, with a "return sweep" to the next line.
  • Print Meaning: Recognizing that the printed wordsβ€”not just the picturesβ€”tell the story and carry a message.
  • Text Structure: Differentiating between letters, words, sentences, as well as recognizing basic punctuation marks.
  • Book Parts: Identifying the title, author and illustrations.

Ways to Build Readiness at Home:

  • Point to words: Slide your finger under words as you read aloud to show directionality.
  • Talk about books: Ask your toddler to help turn pages and point out the front cover before starting.
  • Use environmental print: Point out familiar words on street signs, store signs and logos!
