LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Arts and Literacy Night
Arleta’s 4th annual Art & Literacy Night is tonight, beginning at 5:30PM and we hope your family will join our staff for this fun All Community Connect (including pizza!). Your child’s art will be on display, local musician Alex Addy will perform West African drumming, and you can enjoy creating, learning and connecting with our own local author Andrew Coltrin and Arleta staff hosting literacy or arts activities at tables along the main hallways. 5:30-7PM.
Rightsizing
Thank you to our Arleta parents who attended the Rightsizing and SEGC listening sessions last Saturday. It was inspiring to listen and think together about ways Arleta programs stand out and support our community. Those in attendance raised several thoughtful points including the consideration that closing schools can incur further funding losses, as funding follows students, while closing schools incurs costs. Parents had noticed that while individual schools work hard to increase enrollment they haven't yet noticed a system-wide effort to address dropping enrollments in PPS and wondered whether there were opportunities to do that before closing schools. Your feedback is welcome and vital. You are a very important part of this conversation. Please don’t hesitate to continue to use your voice! There are two additional sessions coming next week: a virtual session on Monday April 20 and in person at Ida B. Wells on April 22. Both begin at 6:00 PM.
Centering Inclusion and Kindness at Arleta
Our Arleta community and culture is so special. Centering ways we navigate the differences between ourselves as adults, and ways we support our children to do so, is an important part of kindness and inclusion in our community.
We are noticing times at Arleta where students are being unkind to each other. You can help us by talking to your student about the impact of actions like whispering, joking, sarcasm, and excluding from play. Remind them, also, of the positive impact of inviting peers to play, speaking up for others, and using kind words. Our students are wonderfully diverse in their personalities, strengths, and ways of experiencing the world which we all value and protect. Every child should feel safe, respected, and valued—not just in words, but in everyday experiences.
Thank you for being part of our caring and thoughtful community! See you Thursday night!
Warmly,
Lisa Hawking

SAVE YOUR BOOKS TO SWAP AT ARTS AND LITERACY NIGHT
Do you have some once-loved kid books around that don't get the attention they deserve? Let's change that!
Starting today April 9th, through the 16th, we're collecting gently used, age/school-appropriate books to be donated to the Arleta Book Swap table. During Arts and Literacy Night on April 16th, students and their siblings will have the opportunity to choose a new favorite book to take home.
📚 We encourage kids who donate their books to include a little note for the next reader.

ALLERGY TIPS FROM NURSE JENNY
Hello everyone! As the seasons change, so do pollen counts. I would like to offer some tips for those who may experience allergy symptoms.
Drink plenty of water. Doing so helps to thin mucus.
Wash face and hands after playing outside to remove pollen.
Wash sheets and pillow cases often.
Discourage scratching of eyes. Use clean, wet compresses for relief of itching instead.
If possible, when temperatures permit, wear a jacket to protect clothes from pollen.
Allergens can worsen asthma symptoms so make sure that your child follows their home maintenance program (antihistamines such as Zyrtec or Claritin) and has access to their rescue inhaler.
Kind Regards,
Nurse Jenny Hefele

CELEBRATE MUSIC DURING NATIONAL ARABIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH!
This week for National Arabic American Heritage Month, consider sharing music from the Middle East with your child.
An important concept in much of the music from the region is maqām. Each performance of Arabic classical music is said to be cast in a maqām. Maqām involves scales of notes separated by the half tones and whole tones also found in Western music, as well as by three-quarter and five-quarter tones. Maqām provides motifs (repeated musical phrases) which an improviser or composer consistently returns to and ways to modulate notes that are immediately recognizable to people familiar with the art.
Each maqām scale is built by chaining together two (or in some cases, three) scale fragments or building blocks called a jins (pl. ajnas) Maqām scales are grouped into families. If you're curious to learn more Middle Eastern music theory, click here!
Below are videos of music featuring different instruments that you can explore with your child. To see a more comprehensive but child-friendly list of musical instruments that these videos were pulled from, click here!
This delicately beautiful piece of music in the YouTube video below is played on the Qanun or kanoon, a traditional stringed instrument that’s either played solo or as part of an Arabic music ensemble. Traditionally, it was first used in the Old Assyrian Empire, where it was made of a box of elephant ivory.
In Arabic, qanun means “rules.” It comes from the fact that this instrument usually sets the pace for other instruments in an ensemble.
The Riq (sometimes spelled as riqq) may look like a tambourine but is played very differently, more like a drum that is held close to the head.
Traditionally, the Riq had a wooden frame, but today the frame is made of metal. It is usually 9″ in diameter. It also features five double jingle pairs and a thin head made of goat and fish skin. The Riq was historically used in worship ceremonies to support the voices of singers. It was widely used in Egyptian, Lebanese, Sudanese, and Iraqi music. The riq was also an accompaniment in takht ensembles in Egypt, Syria, and Iraq.
This wind instrument is called the Ney. It is a type of end-blown flute that has been used in the Arab world for more than 4500 years making it one of the oldest instruments in the world.
The traditional Ney was made of a hollow cane or reed with six holes for the fingers and another for the thumb. The modern ones are made of metal or wood. The mouthpiece is made of either horn, brass, or plastic to protect the wood.
The Oud is probably one of the oldest Arabic musical instruments. It’s called the “grandfather of the guitar” because it is one of the precursors to the modern guitar. This type of lute is a fretless stringed instrument shaped like a pear. It is short-necked, consisting of 11 strings grouped in twos and a single bass string. Here, Avin Ahmadi plays a beautiful, calming Iranian piece of music called "Gar Tīgh Bārad."

SCHOOL YEAR 26-27 OBOB BOOK OF THE WEEK
The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a yearly, statewide reading competition sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries. Students regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. This is a part of a short series where we'll be featuring a different book each week from the 2026-2027 Oregon Battle of the Books Grades 3-5 reading list! Check out the book below!
FRINDLE, BY ANDREW CLEMENTS
Nicholas Allen has plenty of ideas. Who can forget the time he turned his third-grade classroom into a tropical island, or the times he fooled his teacher by chirping like a blackbird? But now Nick's in fifth grade, and it looks like his days as a troublemaker are over.
Everyone knows that Mrs. Granger, the language arts teacher, has X-ray vision, and nobody gets away with anything in her classroom. To make matters worse, she's also a fanatic about the dictionary, which is hopelessly boring to Nick. But when Nick learns an interesting tidbit about words and where they come from, it inspires his greatest plan yet: to invent a new word. From now on, a pen is no longer a pen — it's a frindle.

April
The roofs are shining from the rain,
The sparrows twitter as they fly,
And with a windy April grace
The little clouds go by.
Yet the back yards are bare and brown
With one unchanging tree--
I could not be so sure of Spring
Save that it sings in me.

INVITE HOPE: MARCELO FONATANA AND WAVE CONTEMPORARY AT THE COLLINS GALLERY - NOW THROUGH JULY 5
Central Library is transforming into a space for poetic resistance. Marcelo Fontana and Wave Contemporary invite the viewer to see hope as an active power rather than a passive wish. Eighteen artists will create small and shareable acts of hope displayed in the Collins Gallery. The title for the exhibition, Invite Hope, comes from a Maya Angelou quote: “Hope and fear cannot occupy the same space. Invite one to stay.”
The Collins Gallery, at the top floor of the Central Library, is used for exhibits created by library personnel or by community members in cooperation with library personnel. Use of space by a community organization does not constitute an endorsement of the organization's beliefs by the library.

The answer is you are. And now is the time to help make it even better. You are invited to join in.
