Rooted in Gratitude. Rising Together.

Ram Fam,

As we enter November, I find myself reflecting on the many reasons we have to be thankful for our Galesburg-Augusta school community. Every day, I see examples of staff going above and beyond, students demonstrating kindness and perseverance, and families and community members supporting the work we do together. As we celebrate 75 years of Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools, I am reminded that our district's greatest strength has always been its people. Generations of Rams have helped build the foundation we stand on today, and together, we continue creating opportunities for the next generation.

November is a wonderful time to reflect on how far we have come, celebrate the work happening in our classrooms, and look ahead to what is possible.

🏗️ Bond Update: Planning for Our Future

Our work continues on the projects supported by the May 2026 bond. We remain committed to thoughtful planning, responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars, and creating safe, efficient, and welcoming environments for our students and staff. See Transportation Facility Planning below.

📚 Teaching and Learning: Growing Together

Across the district, our educators continue strengthening instructional practices that support student learning. This year, our focus includes formative assessment, flexible small-group instruction, and using student learning data to guide instructional decisions. Our teachers and instructional leaders have been collaborating to examine student needs, share effective practices, and make adjustments that help every student grow. This work is not about adding another initiative. It is about strengthening the quality and consistency of the instruction our students experience every day. Our goal remains clear: Every student deserves meaningful learning opportunities, appropriate support, and the opportunity to experience success.

💛 Building a Culture of Belonging

October was National Bullying Prevention Month, and our staff worked together to create learning opportunities focused on kindness, respect, inclusion, and positive relationships. We know that building a safe and welcoming school culture requires more than a single month of activities. It requires intentional work every day. We continue emphasizing the importance of understanding the difference between conflict and bullying, using respectful communication, seeking adult support, and making choices that keep ourselves and others safe. I am grateful for the staff members who have helped lead this important work.

🐏 Student Voice: RAM Council

One of the opportunities I am especially excited about this year is our RAM Council.

Our students have important perspectives about their school experiences, and we want to make sure those voices are part of our improvement efforts. Through RAM Council, students will have opportunities to explore school culture, belonging, student engagement, and ways to strengthen their schools. I look forward to hearing their ideas, learning from their experiences, and working together to turn student feedback into meaningful action.

🍂 A Season of Gratitude

As Thanksgiving approaches, I encourage all of us to recognize the people who make a difference in our lives. To our teachers, support staff, administrators, transportation team, food service employees, custodians, and every individual who contributes to our district: thank you. To our families: thank you for trusting us with your children and partnering with us in their education. To our students: thank you for the energy, curiosity, creativity, and joy you bring to our schools. And to our community: thank you for continuing to invest in the future of Galesburg-Augusta. Our roots run deep, and our future is bright because of the people who make up this Ram Fam.

Rooted in our history. Rising toward our future.

Thank you for RAMMIN' with us!

Family Engagement Survey

Thank you for taking the time to share feedback about your family's experience with Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools.

Your anonymous feedback helps us identify what is working well, celebrate areas of strength, and determine where we can improve communication, culture, systems, student and family support, and the overall experience of our G-A families.

We will administer the Family Engagement Survey each fall and spring so we can monitor progress, establish goals, and determine whether the actions we take are making a positive difference.

Please provide honest, constructive, and solution-oriented feedback. Results will be reviewed at the district and building levels and used to identify celebrations, priorities, and next steps.

Goal #1: 90% completion of the Family Engagement Survey by 5pm, Friday, October 30th.

Goal #2: 75% Highly Satisfied on "Overall, how satisfied are you with your family's experience at G-ACS?"

Goal #3: at least 90% Highly Satisfied on "My student feels safe at school."

Goal #4: Demonstrated growth in identified priority areas from fall to spring.

Rating Scale:

  • 5=Strongly Agree
  • 4=Agree
  • 3=Neutral
  • 2=Disagree
  • 1=Strongly Disagree

The results of this survey will be analyzed to identify what is working well and to determine areas where we can continue to grow and improve. Thank you for your participation. Your input truly matters to us!

Transportation Facility Update

Planning for our new transportation facility continues to move forward! To date, district representatives and our project partners have participated in approximately eight planning sessions, along with visits to other school transportation facilities to explore layouts, operations, equipment, and best practices.

Through these planning sessions, we have made important decisions regarding the design, layout, and functional needs of the new transportation facility. Our next step is to evaluate potential locations and ensure that the costs associated with each option align with our available bond funding.

We are currently exploring several important logistical and infrastructure considerations, including student arrival and dismissal traffic patterns, existing electrical services, sewer connections, and the underground gas tank. Each of these factors can influence site feasibility, construction costs, and long-term operations.

Our next planning meeting is scheduled for November 2, when we will explore an additional potential location adjacent to our current transportation facility, near the end of the former football field.

While we have made progress on the building's design, we are not yet close to selecting a final location. The accompanying image highlights some of the early considerations being evaluated. There are still several options to explore, costs to analyze, and logistical factors to work through before making a final decision.

We wanted to share where we are in the process and provide our community with a glimpse into the thoughtful planning happening behind the scenes. Our goal is to ensure that the facility we have designed can be constructed within our financial resources while meeting the transportation needs of our district for years to come.

We look forward to sharing more as this project progresses! Reach out to Superintendent Lindsey Newton at Lindsey.Newton@garams.org or Facilities Director Frank Couach at Frank.Couch@garams.org if you have any questions.

Building Healthy Relationships

Healthy relationships are an important part of a student's emotional and social development.

During the middle school years, friendships can change quickly, peer pressure can increase, and

students are learning how to communicate, manage disagreements, and set boundaries.

Families play an important role in helping students understand what healthy relationships look like

and how to recognize when a relationship may be unhealthy.

October 1, 2026

Dear Seniors and Parents/Guardians,

Happy College Month!

October is an exciting time for our seniors as you begin making plans for life after high school. Whether your goal is a four-year college, community college, trade school, career training, or another postsecondary pathway, October is a great time to begin exporting your options and learning how you can make your education more affordable.

One of the most important steps seniors and families can take this year is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

FAFSA is More Than Student Loans

Many families hear “FAFSA” and immediately think about student loans. However, the FAFSA is not just for loans.

Completing the FAFSA can open the doors to grants and scholarships that may be available to help pay for college or career training. Unlike loans, grants and scholarships generally do not have to be repaid. You may qualify for assistance you do not realize is available. Completing the FAFSA is the best way to find out what financial aid your student may be eligible to receive.

Michigan Achievement Scholarship

One example is the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, which provides multiple pathways to financial assistance for eligible Michigan students pursuing postsecondary education or career training. The scholarship can provide thousands of dollars in financial assistance, helping make college or career training more affordable.

To be considered for all three Michigan Achievement Scholarship pathways, completing the FAFSA is an important first step.

A New Requirement for the Class of 2027

Beginning with the Class of 2027, every student in grade 12 is required to complete one of the following:

  1. A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  2. A District waiver form indicating that the student and family understand the available financial aid opportunities and have chosen not to complete the FAFSA

Don’t Leave Money on the Table

As we begin Michigan College Month, we encourage every senior and family to explore the financial aid opportunities available before deciding not to complete the FAFSA.

Completing the FAFSA does not mean that a student has to attend college, accept a student loan, or commit to a particular school. It simply allows your family to find out what financial assistance your student may be eligible to receive.

Taking the time to complete the FAFSA could open the door to grants, scholarships, and other financial aid that can make a meaningful difference in the cost of your student’s education or career training.

If you have questions about completing the FAFSA or the new Class of 2027 FAFSA requirement, please contact Bethany Stanton at bethany.stanton@garams.org or 269-484-2103.

Thank you for partnership during College Month and throughout your student’s senior year.

Sincerely,

Bethany Stanton

Great Things to do as a Parent

  • Encourage and motivate: Be a "cheerleader" with a positive attitude, show genuine interest in their education, and praise their effort.

  • Establish routines: Create a consistent time and quiet space for homework and reading.

  • Teach essential skills: Help them develop organizational skills by checking backpacks with them, using a homework log or calendar, and teaching them to make "to-do" lists.

  • Make learning relevant: Connect what they are learning to real-life situations.

  • Promote healthy habits: Ensure they get enough sleep, eat well, and limit screen time.

  • Encourage independent learning: Allow them to learn from mistakes and take ownership of their work, while providing support and guidance.

Fire Safety Highlights

The 3rd graders and the Preschool students visited the Galesburg-Augusta Fire Department this month to talk about the importance of having a fire safety plan. They taught our students that if there is a fire at home to stay low and crawl fast, leave everything behind, and to never hide. All students got to see and hear what a fully dressed firefighter looks and sounds like and learn about all of the tools and supplies that can be found on a fire truck. Does your family have a fire safety plan and meeting place? Make one today!

Presidential Fitness Test

During the month of October, our primary focus in physical education has been on developing the skills of the underhand toss and overhand throw. These are important lifetime skills that students can utilize in a variety of sports and recreational activities.

We have also continued to emphasize physical fitness and the five components of physical fitness, with a continued focus on flexibility. Students have been introduced to new stretching exercises and warm-up activities to help improve flexibility and develop healthy habits that can benefit them throughout their lives. In addition, we continue to reinforce appropriate behavior, expectations, and procedural routines to ensure that our gymnasium remains a safe, positive, and productive learning environment.

Schools are now expected to administer the Presidential Physical Fitness Test. Over the past two weeks, I have begun preparing students by introducing and practicing some of the skills associated with the assessment. Our initial focus has been on sit-ups and push-ups, with students practicing planks to help develop the core strength necessary for these activities.

Our annual Walk to School event was held in early October and was very well attended, with nearly 300 students and parents participating. It was encouraging to see so many families supporting physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

Looking Ahead to November: Our primary skill-development goals will focus on catching and dribbling, while continuing to reinforce physical fitness, flexibility, appropriate behavior, and positive participation.
