News and Notes from Ducketts Lane Administration News and Notes from Ducketts Lane Administration

đŸ©”Greetings DLES Families & Community Partners! đŸ©”

Although it was a short week, we certainly packed a lot into our three days together! We continued our celebration and learning in honor of Black History Month, our second graders enjoyed an exciting field trip experience, and students quickly returned to focusing on the important standards we are continuing to master before the end of the school year.

We now have several full five-day weeks ahead of us, and consistent attendance will be especially important. Please continue partnering with us to ensure students are present each day, ready to learn and grow. Every day truly matters.

As a friendly reminder, report cards were recently sent home. If you have any questions about your child’s progress, we encourage you to reach out directly to the teacher for that content area. We deeply value our partnership with families and appreciate your ongoing support.

Thank you for all you do to support your child and our school community.

đŸ§€ Don’t Let It Disappear — Check Lost & Found This Week! đŸ§€ Don’t Let It Disappear — Check Lost & Found This Week!

We currently have a large number of items in our Lost and Found. Please encourage your child to check for any missing belongings as soon as possible. Families are also welcome to stop by and look through the Lost and Found table next week between 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. each day.

Any items that remain unclaimed will be removed at the end of the school day on Friday, February 27th. Thank you for helping us reunite students with their belongings!

Black History Month Spotlight Black History Month Spotlight

In honor of Black History Month, one of the many ways we are uplifting this important and meaningful time for our students is by highlighting individuals they may or may not have learned about before. Each day during morning announcements, we share interesting and “cool” facts about influential Black leaders, innovators, and trailblazers.

This week, our students learned about Marley Dias, a young author, activist, and literacy advocate who began making a national impact at just 11 years old. Students were inspired to learn that Marley launched the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign to collect and donate books featuring Black girls as the main characters—helping ensure more children could see themselves reflected in the stories they read.

They also learned that Marley is a published author, has been recognized on national platforms for her advocacy, and continues to use her voice to promote representation, equity, and the power of reading. Her leadership reminds us that age does not limit impact and that one determined learner can spark meaningful change.

The image below highlights some of the facts and accomplishments our students explored together.

March Attendance Contest

We are getting excited to start our March attendance contest- running from March 2–March 27!

Here’s how it works:

Each day that a homeroom reaches 95% attendance or higher, that class earns one point. Every day counts!

There’s a little friendly competition involved—classes within each grade level will compete against one another, and the class with the highest number of points at the end of the contest will win a special award. But that’s not all! Grade levels are also working together, because the grade level with the highest overall total of points will earn a celebration as well.

It’s teamwork, responsibility, and school spirit all rolled into one! Let’s build strong attendance habits and show up ready to learn each and every day. We can’t wait to see which class—and which grade level—comes out on top! 🏆✹ Remember: Every day matters. Every student counts.

Let Your Child Be the Math Teacher!

One of the best ways to strengthen math skills is by talking about math at home! When children explain their thinking, they deepen their understanding and build confidence. We encourage families to invite their child to “teach” them something they’ve been learning in math.

Try asking questions like:

  • “What strategy did you use to solve that problem?”

  • “Can you show me a different way to solve it?”

  • “How do you know your answer makes sense?”

  • “What is a tricky type of problem you’ve been working on?”

  • “Can you make up a problem for me to solve?”

Ask your child to grab paper, a whiteboard, or even household objects to model their thinking. Whether they’re explaining addition strategies, fractions, multi-step word problems, or measurement, letting them be the teacher builds ownership and pride in their learning.

When students can teach it, they truly understand it!

Higher winter bills are often tied, in part, to increased energy use during extreme cold. There are steps you can take now!

This includes scheduling an HVAC tune-up, using a programmable thermostat, lowering water heater temperatures, and tracking usage with online tools and alerts. See the available resources at www.bge.com/winter.
