Message from Principal Tesch
Greetings Spartan Families:
It is hard to believe that the first quarter has come to an end. Here are a few reminders as we begin the second quarter.
SHS students are receiving progress reports on November 7. Grades on these progress reports are considered in-progress grades and are not final until the end of the semester(January 16th, 2026). It is not uncommon for students to have not yet achieved grade-level proficiency (3) on standards as they are working toward proficiency over the course of the semester.
In order to pass the course at the end of the semester, a student must have earned 1s or higher on all of the standards assessed in the course. While they still have until the end of the semester to improve the score, I encourage you to speak to your student if they have received a NEE on any standard. A score of NEE indicates that a student has not demonstrated evidence of progress toward meeting a standard. Most frequently students receive a NEE when they have not completed a summative assessment. Please encourage your student to connect with their teacher to address any NEE on their progress report.
At Superior High School, we have an “away for the day” policy in regards to cell phones and mobile devices. We have been seeing more and more personal devices that can connect to the internet, at school. As a reminder, our policy for all Personal Devices (including laptops, Ipads, earbuds, gaming devices and phones, is “Away for the day in a backpack/out of sight”. Students are issued a school district laptop and that is the only device that should be accessing our network within the building during the day. Please see this document for more details.
Thank you for your continued partnership! Go Spartans!
Sincerely,
Kate Tesch

The Northland Program is now taking orders for our handmade Christmas Wreaths. This fundraiser is very important for the Northland Program because this is how we are able to fund our experiential education program.
Your purchase of a wreath or swag helps our team build our student's skills and creates real value in their lives. Please consider buying a wreath or a swag by using this order form. Wreaths and Swags cost $25 each. We harvest the materials sustainably by hand and hand make the products. This is our tenth year doing this fundraiser and we could not do any of this without your support.

Johnny's Ambassadors Visits SHS
On October 21st, 9th and 10th grade students at SHS attended an educational presentation about the harms and risks of using marijuana presented by Laura Stack from Johnny's Ambassadors.
Laura Stack’s son, Johnny, was a computer whiz with a perfect math score on the SAT and a 4.0 GPA. He started vaping THC at a party at 14 years old and died by suicide five years later after becoming delusional from dabbing. Soon afterward, Laura started a nonprofit organization, Johnny’s Ambassadors, to educate parents and teens about the dangers of youth THC misuse.
By weaving Johnny’s story throughout her science-based presentation, Laura educates teens on how THC can disrupt brain development. Laura’s presentation reviews the newest research on the potential harms of vaping, dabbing, and edibles in a teen-friendly way. More than anything, Laura wants to help teens understand the science and potential harms of today’s marijuana.
Why the big concern about marijuana? The marijuana used during the 1960s to 1980s had THC contents of less than 2%. That is not the case today. The cannabis industry has developed strains of marijuana and concentrated marijuana products with much higher concentrations of THC, the psychoactive component that causes addiction. The more potent a drug is, the stronger the possibility of addiction and the more likely the person will continue to purchase and use the product.
According to the National Institute of Medicine, THC levels in cannabis today contain THC levels of up to 28%. Additionally, we now have concentrated THC products such as oil, shatter, dab, and edibles that have been able to get the THC concentration upwards of 95%. There is absolutely no research that indicates this level of THC is beneficial for any medical condition. The purpose of these products is to produce a high, and the increased potency makes them potentially more dangerous and more likely to result in addiction.
If you wish to learn more about Johnny's Ambassadors or find education and prevention resources related to THC and THC concentrates and teens, click here.
Health Office
Caffeine may be harmful to our students. According to self-report surveys, energy drinks are consumed by 30% to 50% of adolescents and young adults. Frequently containing high and unregulated amounts of caffeine, these drinks have been reported in association with serious adverse effects, especially in children, adolescents, and young adults with seizures, diabetes, cardiac abnormalities, or mood and behavioral disorders or those who take certain medications.
Pediatricians advise against caffeine for children under 12 and against any use of energy drinks for all children and teens. They also suggest limiting caffeine to at most 100 mg daily for those 12-18 years old. One 16-oz Monster (160 mg) or two 12-oz cans of Mountain Dew (110 mg) already exceed this threshold. Caffeine may also be in certain foods and there are now caffeine pouches. Please be aware of caffeine intake in your child and what is safe to send to school.
