Message from the Principal, Dr. Andre Bala Message from the Principal, Dr. Andre Bala

Smoky Hill High School Community,

As we approach Thanksgiving, I find myself reflecting on all that I am grateful for. Outside of my family and my health, I am most grateful to serve as the Principal of Smoky Hill High School. This season is a meaningful time to pause and recognize the people, moments, and opportunities that have shaped our year so far. I hope each of you has the chance to take a moment to reflect on what you are most thankful for, whether it’s a supportive friend, a caring teacher, a hard-earned achievement, or simply the chance to be part of this incredible school community.

Serving as the Principal of Smoky Hill High School is one of my greatest blessings. Every day, I am humbled by the dedication of our staff, the curiosity and resilience of our students, and the steadfast support of our families and community partners. Thank you for trusting me with the privilege of leading such an amazing school. Your partnership, encouragement, and belief in our work mean more to me than I can fully express.

As we head into Thanksgiving Break, my wish for each of you is simple: rest, recharge, and reconnect. I hope your days are filled with safety, peace, and the kind of joy that comes from time spent with those who matter most. Please take good care of yourselves and one another. We need you back healthy, refreshed, and ready to finish the first semester strong.

With gratitude,

Dr. Andre Bala

Smoky Hill STRIDE Clinic Relocation

The Smoky Hill STRIDE Clinic is being relocated to the southeast parking lot, just outside the Smoky Hill Cafeteria and Nurses' Office. Because of this, the southeast parking lot will be closed for construction and will reopen on Monday, November 24th.

Here is the Smoky Hill STRIDE Clinic relocation timeline:

-Wednesday, 11/26 – During Thanksgiving break, the construction company will complete infrastructure work.

-Saturday, 11/29 – The construction company will demobilize from the site until Winter Break.

-Friday, 12/19 – Stride begins relocation; Construction company re-mobilizes to the site.

-Monday, 12/22 – Wednesday, 12/31 – Stride modular relocation construction activities (to be completed during Winter Break).

-Friday, 1/2 – Sunday, 1/4 – Stride moves back into the clinic; construction company demobilizes from the site.

We ask that community members not enter the construction zone and be respectful of the relocation process. I appreciate your patience, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Attendance Clarification from Assistant Principal, Rosita Tantao Attendance Clarification from Assistant Principal, Rosita Tantao

Hello Smoky Hill Families,

Thank you for all of the thoughtful feedback you have shared over the past week regarding our attendance policy and several of its specific components. We appreciate your partnership and want to ensure that our policies are clear, consistent, and supportive of our students and families. Based on the concerns we have heard, we would like to provide the following clarification:

  • Club Sports:

    • Moving forward, absences for club sports will be excused when verification and documentation are provided by families at least one week (7 days) in advance of the competition date.

  • College Visits:

    • All college visits will be excused with verification and documentation submitted at least 24 hours in advance.

  • Vacations:

    • Vacations will have the first three (3) days excused with appropriate documentation. Any vacation days beyond the initial three will not be excused.

As previously communicated, all absences and tardies must be reported to the Attendance Clerk (via Talking Points), Rosita Tantao, or the Dean’s Office , as these are the only individuals who can excuse absences requiring verification and documentation.

Thank you again for your continued communication and support as we work together to uphold a system that best serves our students.

In Partnership,

Rosita Tantao, Assistant Principal | Smoky Hill High School

Final exams are December 16-18

Final exams are December 16-18. Final exams allow students to demonstrate what they’ve learned and to finalize their grades; they also reinforce a culture of academic excellence by setting high expectations, honoring sustained effort, and emphasizing true mastery of course content. To reinforce this belief, all teachers are expected to provide students with a final exam, culminating activity, or in class presentation on their designated exam day. In turn, students are expected to attend and participate in final exams. In the instance a student misses an exam/s, the Student Make-up/Late Work Policy applies, and if eligible based on that policy, would be able to make up the exam during the remainder of finals week or when school resumes after the winter break.

The More You Know…

Keeping Your Home Safe

Keeping your home a safe space for your teen involves securing any potentially harmful substances, such as alcohol, prescription medications, or vaping products. Consider implementing a system for monitoring your teen’s use of substances, and regularly talk about your expectations regarding use. Discuss the consequences of violating household rules and explain why these rules are in place. Having a locked storage space for medications and other substances can also help prevent misuse.

Did you know Cherry Creek School District has an Adolescent Substance Use Prevention, Intervention, Resources & Education (ASPIRE) Team of school health professionals that supports students and school communities with substance use prevention, intervention and education? If you feel your child is in need of support, reach out to your school for more information.

Smoky Hill Buffs Pantry

What is Buff's Pantry?

As a class, we have aimed to make a difference in our Smoky Hill community, and we decided to do this by creating a safe space where students can receive the food and hygiene products they need on a weekly basis. We offer multiple types of food, whether it’s canned/boxed or just quick snacks, hygiene products, baby products (diapers/wipes), and clothes/shoes. We receive donations from SECOR, the local community, students, and our CCSD district Food Pantry Liaisons. Last year, we were able to serve 70 families in total. Our goal is to limit food insecurity and strengthen our school holistically.

How it runs:

Weekly, as students scan the QR codes that are placed in every classroom and around the school and we receive orders in the Google Form, Call 2 Action students will create individualized bags for each student. They will then deliver them to the counseling office. Students will be called to the counseling office to pick up their bags. Our hope is to reduce any shame that comes with needing support by keeping this process as anonymous as possible.

Here is the Buff's Pantry Google form link for you to fill out with your needs:

Financial Literacy

Smoky Hill Counselors are working with students to teach them financial literacy. Why is teaching financial literacy important? Financial literacy is essential for all students, regardless of their background or future career path. It equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of personal finance, make informed decisions, and achieve financial security. The Importance of Campus Visits

Exploring campuses is a key step in your college or trade school journey. It’s not just about touring buildings—it’s about experiencing the environment, meeting the people, and discovering where you feel most at home. While many families choose to visit during summer or school breaks, there’s also great value in visiting while classes are in session. Doing so allows you to get a true sense of the energy, community, and day-to-day life on campus. Both options can help you decide which schools may be the best fit for you. To help you get started, we’ve included links to campus visit opportunities at colleges and universities across Colorado. You can also Click here for tips on how to get the most out of each visit.
