Week 9
Dear Elmore School Families,
We had another great week at the Elmore School. The days and weeks seem to be going by so quickly as we are so busy with activities, lessons, and learning! I can't believe I'm already reporting on our 9th week of school!
Literacy:
During literacy this week we had an array of lessons and activities. Students continued working on suffix endings in phonics and spelling. During writing students worked on revising and editing their personal narratives, and 3rd graders spent some time practicing using a graphic organizer and drafting paragraphs in preparation for the On Demand Writing Prompt (ODWP) assessment they will take next Tuesday. And, We are beginning a reading unit which will focus on Colonies.
Math:
During Math the 1st and 2nd graders took and end of unit assessment and they started their second unit which will focus on Adding and Subtracting bigger numbers with in 100. 3rd graders completed their 1st unit and took and end of section checkpoint. Next week they will take the end of Unit assessment before moving onto their 2nd unit.
Science / Global Citizenship
This year we are participating in the Discover Dairy Program. Part of this program is adopting a calf. Our "adopted" calf will continue to live on its Dairy Farm in Addison Vermont, but we will receive calf updates throughout the year to track her growth and health. This week students participated in a Discover Dairy Lesson where they learned a little about raising calves and what the farmers do on a farm to keep their animals "happy" and healthy, as well as all the other related responsibilities Dairy farmers have. This year, our calf is a holstein heifer named Maple!
We are Gorgeous day for ECO this week. The sun was shining which helped take the chill of the cool morning air. We have moved our campsite to a different location in the campground this week which will offer us a new experience. Our old site was on the back side of the campground and was surrounded by large pine trees. The new sight is closer for us to get to and offers a lot of deciduous trees, and it is near a stream. I think it will make a great outdoor classroom. This week our focus lesson was about using our senses while at ECO to notice and wonder about things, and then we walked the area and marked boundaries and potential hazards . During Forest Choice students played in the leaves, built fairy houses, explored the area, and we roasted cinnamon apples in foil pouches which everyone enjoyed eating before we ending our morning. Thank you to the Yeatmans for a large donation of firewood and to Paige Bowen and Tina Lyon for volunteering their time this week!
We also celebrated 4 birthday's in the last week! Happy Birthday to Kaya, Hallie, Birdie and Woody!
Hopefully, you all found your school photos which went home on Thursday. If anyone desires retakes, please let me know ASAP as this will need to be arranged.
