Dear Bobcat Families,

As we conclude the first quarter of the school year, we have much to celebrate across our school community. Homecoming brought students, families, staff, and alumni together, with the parade, powder puff game, and bonfire showcasing the pride and spirit that connect us. Our student-athletes have also given us plenty to cheer about through their success, hard work, and dedication. Thank you to the coaches, advisors, staff, and families who make all of our extra-curricular experiences possible.

We are also pleased to see continued progress on the high school renovation as we invest in spaces that support learning and create new opportunities for our students. Alongside this work, we remain focused on school safety and our responsibility to provide welcoming, secure environments where learners and staff can thrive.

Looking ahead, our upcoming Veterans Day recognition will provide an opportunity to honor those who have served our country and help our students understand the meaning of service and sacrifice. We look forward to expressing our gratitude to the veterans in our community.

Finally, stay tuned for our Blueprint for Excellence, which will help guide our district’s work and priorities for the future. Your partnership is essential as we build on our strengths and continue to grow. Thank you for your support and for the many ways you contribute to the success of our schools.

Warmly,

Dr. Jason Bottiglieri

Superintendent of Schools

As a reminder all students are able to receive a free breakfast thanks to the Free Breakfast initiative from Governor Shapiro’s office. To comply with the guidelines, students who pick up a breakfast meal in the morning are asked to take a fruit and/or juice. If a student does not want to consume one of the required breakfast meal items, we encourage them to place it in the community collection basket set out at the registers. The extras will be set aside for other Bobcats to pick up if they would like something extra. We love when Bobcats support Bobcats!

Keeping School Meals Safe: What Pennsylvania Food Safety Keeping School Meals Safe: What Pennsylvania Food Safety

Inspections Mean for Your Child Inspections Mean for Your Child

Food Safety Clipart
zoom_out_map

School meals do more than feed students. They fuel learning, growth, and health. That is why our school nutrition program follows strict food safety standards set by Pennsylvania and USDA.

What happens during a food safety inspection?

Pennsylvania requires school cafeterias to meet food safety rules based on the FDA Food Code. A certified food safety inspector visits our kitchens to check:

  • Proper food temperatures during receiving, storage, cooking, holding, and serving

  • Correct cooling and reheating procedures

  • Cleanliness of equipment, surfaces, and handwashing stations

  • Staff illness policies and hygiene practices

  • Pest control and facility maintenance

  • Safe food sources and proper labeling

How does this connect to school nutrition requirements?

Our meals must also meet USDA school nutrition standards. That means every breakfast and lunch includes the right amounts of fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and milk for each age group. Food safety and nutrition go hand in hand: safe food is the foundation of a healthy meal.

What you should know

  • We keep a written HACCP-based food safety plan at every school.

  • Temperature logs, cleaning checklists, and production records are completed daily.

  • Our staff are trained in safe food handling and follow standard operating procedures.

  • The most recent health inspection report is posted where the public can see it.

Questions?

If you ever have a question about food safety, allergens, special diets, or school meals, contact your school cafeteria manager or the district child nutrition office.

Thank you for trusting us to feed your child safely every day.

Exploring, Creating & Thinking Beyond the Classroom!

Students in Northeastern's Elementary, Intermediate, and Middle School Gifted programs are expanding their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills through monthly, day-long Enrichment Summits!

Elementary students explored creative architecture by designing unique buildings and became detectives through mystery-solving activities involving fingerprinting, chromatography, and cybercrime investigations.

Intermediate students traveled the world through hands-on learning, exploring South American cultures by creating robotic floats and musical instruments before heading to England to write and perform their own Shakespeare-inspired plays.

Middle School students investigated global trade and shipping through coding and robotics challenges, then unleashed their imaginations by designing fictional kingdoms complete with governments, economies, cultures, and geography.

These engaging experiences encourage our Bobcats to collaborate, innovate, and think beyond the traditional classroom!

Shallow Brook Bobcats Take on BizTown!

Our Shallow Brook 6th graders recently worked hard all day long "on the job" at JA BizTown. In this awesome experience, kids made the town run smoothly by filling jobs like architect, construction manager, video game designer, newscaster, radio DJ, and more! Along the way, students learned real-world skills such as how to write checks, manage a debit card, balance a checkbook, and make deposits into their bank accounts. Also learning the importance of voting, the students voted to support a charity that helps local cancer patients and their families. A special thanks goes to the 35+ parent volunteers who made this trip possible!

Future Doctors in Action!

First graders at York Haven Elementary are getting an inside look at the amazing human body! As they explore the circulatory, digestive, nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems, students are discovering how each system works together to keep us healthy. Bringing their learning to life, these young “doctors” scrubbed in with their surgical teams and rotated through four classroom “operating rooms” for an exciting, hands-on learning experience. This creative activity helped our Bobcats better understand the human body while gaining an appreciation for the important work of medical professionals. Who knows? We may have some future doctors among us!

Young Entrepreneurs at Work!

The big day finally arrived! Over the past two months, our Spring Forge 6th graders have been diving headfirst into the world of economics to prepare for their unforgettable trip to JA BizTown. Along the way, students learned the ins and outs of financial literacy and welcomed inspiring guest speakers from a variety of professional careers. Taking their learning to the next level, our young entrepreneurs crafted resumes, filled out job applications, and tackled real-world interviews. A few brave candidates even took to the podium to deliver campaign speeches before voting for their town leaders! All that hard work paid off on October 20th and 21st during their culminating visit to JA BizTown. Students stepped up as true young professionals, operating a bustling mini-community complete with its own functioning economy. It was an incredible, hands-on experience, and our 6th graders walked away with memories—and valuable life lessons—that will last a lifetime. Way to go, future leaders!

A Fantastic Start for Our Bobcats!

The first quarter at Orendorf Elementary has been filled with learning, excitement, and plenty of Bobcat pride! Our students and staff have been hard at work building relationships, establishing routines, and creating a positive school community where every student can thrive.

Learning is in full swing across all grade levels! Our Kindergarten students are building foundational skills through letter and number identification and letter sounds. First graders are continuing their journey of learning to read, practicing tricky words and blending sounds to form words while exploring exciting topics such as fairy tales, the human body, and different lands. In math, they are developing foundational skills in simple addition and subtraction. Second graders are making the exciting transition from learning to read to reading to learn, focusing on reading fluency while exploring fairy tales and Ancient Greece! In math, they are tackling multi-digit addition and subtraction. Our third graders are developing foundational multiplication skills and exploring a variety of multiplication strategies. In literacy, students have explored classical tales and are transitioning into animal classifications while also learning cursive writing and refining their sentence structures.

Beyond the classroom, Bobcat pride is everywhere! Our third graders have been building confidence, perseverance, and teamwork through the Bobcats on the Run club. Our PTO also hosted Celebrity Scoop at Rita's, providing another wonderful opportunity to connect with our families. We enjoyed a successful Fall Fest, bringing families and staff together for an evening of community fun. Thank you to Officer Brice, Union Fire Co. #1, NHS 4Diamonds, and everyone who helped make this event a success!

We celebrated our Marking Period 1 Bobcat Bash, recognizing students for demonstrating our schoolwide T.R.A.C.K.S. expectations and making positive choices. The fun continues with our annual Trick or Treat Trail on October 22, another favorite Orendorf tradition!

As we head into the second marking period, we look forward to continued academic growth, schoolwide celebrations, and opportunities to strengthen the connections that make Orendorf so special. Thank you to our staff, families, and community for a fantastic start to the school year!
