WPS Middle and High School Orchestras
Updates
Concert Date: January 25, 2023
We are combining the high school and middle school orchestra concerts this year.
Calling all high school students and middle school students playing the high school music: We will have a couple of after-school rehearsals at Watertown Middle School to prep for the concert. High school students already know this music but it would be awesome to have you for a few rehearsals to play through it with the middle school students.
High school music rehearsal dates (time is 3:10 - 4:00) at WMS
High school students arrive as soon as you can; I know this is a quick turnaround if you're walking over to WMS!
- Tuesday, January 3rd
- Thursday, January 5th
- Tuesday, January 10
- Tuesday, January 17
- Tuesday, January 24
Schedule Updates:
- Festival Orchestra will take a winter "break" and start up again the first week of February
- All City Orchestra will start up again on Tuesday, January 10th (taking off January 3rd)
Friends of Watertown Music
The Friends of Watertown Music is a parent organization which has been a major support of the fine arts program in Watertown for over ten years. FoWM is beginning to plan for our first MusicFest since 2019 and invites all parents who would like to help in any way. Email HelloWatertownMusic@gmail.com or call Chris Lowry at 617-923-0502 to learn more.
Concert Dress
For our performances, we ask students to dress "professionally" with black dress clothes on the bottom and a white dress top, or in all black (black dress pants/skirt/dress and black top). Black shoes are also preferred if possible.
We Love Music!
We are so fortunate to be able to maintain an in-school instrumental lesson schedule. This makes it possible for all of our students to participate! We strive to be able to support our students in their musical endeavors in the most equitable ways possible. Here are some reasons why music learning is so beneficial to our students and why it's so important that everyone has the opportunity to explore their musical interests:
Preparation for the creative economy: Investing in creative education can prepare students for the 21st century workforce. The new economy has created more artistic careers, and these jobs may grow faster than others in the future.
Music can develop spatial intelligence: Students who study music can improve the development of spatial intelligence, which allows them to perceive the world accurately and form mental pictures. Spatial intelligence is helpful for advanced mathematics and more.
Development in creative thinking: Kids who study the arts can learn to think creatively. This kind of education can help them solve problems by thinking outside the box and realizing that there may be more than one right answer.
WHS to NYC Spring 2023
Local Symphony Performances
Being near the city we have lots of amazing orchestras performing all of the time! These groups are made up of community members; all musicians, but not all musicians in a professional sense. It's always amazing to see the Boston Symphony, but our local groups showcase how we can continue being musicians as a hobby throughout our lives, while still working in our chosen fields.

All City and Festival Orchestras: Every Tuesday!
- Festival Orchestra (6 - 8th grade): Festival Orchestra club will meet right after school on Tuesdays, from 3:05 - 4:15 or so. Open to all string students at WMS who are in at least their fourth year of playing, this group will perform for assemblies, field trips, Six Flags, etc. 7th and 8th-grade students who are not in this group but want to attend the Six Flags trip (likely May 19, 2023) will be given the opportunity to learn the music.
- All-City Orchestra (First, Second, and Third Year Players): We will also continue to have All-City Orchestra, which will primarily be first and second-year players, as well as 6 - 12th-grade mentors. WMS and WHS students interested in earning community service hours can join us on Tuesdays from 4:30 - 5:30 to mentor the younger players, offer sectionals, etc.
MMEA District Festivals
Students in 7th - 9th grade can audition for the MA Music Ed Association's Junior District Festival. I highly recommend that students interested in auditioning for this group look into private lessons, as the audition is quite competitive in this area. That said, this is a really cool ensemble to try out for, is a low, one-time commitment, and is a minimal fee (I think $30-40 total for audition and participation). Auditions and festival both happen in the greater Boston area.
