Class of 2027

It's hard to believe it's already October! With September in our rearview and November 1 ahead of us, all things post-secondary planning begin to pick up a notch. In this newsletter, we'll highlight the following:

  1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  2. Letters of Recommendation and Deadlines
  3. Transcript Request Forms and Deadlines
  4. International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 150 Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) application.

FAFSA is Now Open

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now open.

The FAFSA qualifies you for grants (free money) from both the Federal Government (PELL Grant) and the State of Illinois (Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant). Also, FAFSA completion is required if you plan to use any of the government affiliated student loan programs (Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized).

Completing the FAFSA is also a State of Illinois high school graduation requirement.

Letters of Recommendation

Requesting Letters of Recommendation is a 3 part process:

1.) Ask the recommender (counselor/teacher) in person.

- This request must be made three weeks in advance of the first due date is needed. For example, if your first due date is November 1st, your in-person request needs to be completed by 3:30 pm, Tuesday, October 13th.

2. Complete the appropriate recommendation form: Counselor, Teacher

- The appropriate letter of recommendation form is due two weeks before the first required due date. A November 1st deadline requires submission by 3:30 pm, Friday, October 16th.

3.) Thank your recommender!

- A handwritten thank you is always a nice touch.

Notes:

1.) Send only what is required for letters of recommendation. If you feel compelled to submit letters of recommendation that are not required please consult with Mr. Bargar first. More is not necessarily better. You can find letter of recommendation requirements by doing a search for ("name of institution" undergraduate admissions). Please do not just do a search for "Does x university require letters of rec?" I have seen that be incorrect on many occassions.

2.) Teacher letter of recommendation requests should be of core course (English, math, science, social studies, world language) teachers. Please note that not all colleges/universities consider world language to be a core course. Check with the college/universities you are applying to before submitting.

Transcript Request Forms Reminders

Transcript Request Form Reminders:

1.) A separate transcript request form is REQUIRED for all colleges/universities that you are applying to.

2.) To ensure that all materials are delivered on time transcript request forms are due two weeks before the deadline of the institution you are applying to.

- Transcript Request Forms for November 1st deadlines are due by 3:30 pm, Friday, October 16th.

3.) When completing transcript request forms you should be following the guidance of the specific institutions undergraduate admissions page. Those websites can be found by doing a search for ("name of institution" undergraduate admissions).

Notes:

1.) November 1st is a Sunday this year which means counselors and Mr. Bargar will not be available after 3:30 pm on Friday, October 30th.

2.) Due to November 1st being on a Sunday has your college/university extended their deadline to November 2nd or 3rd to allow for the weekend?

3.) Your application does not have to be complete to complete the transcript request form. When the forms asks about submission date just use today's date.

4.) At this point in time, most of your are applying using the following Decision Types: Early Action/Priority or Rolling. Early Decision is binding (ie if you are admitted to that institution that is where you are going, see Mr. Bargar with questions), and only select schools offer Restrictive Early Action (ie Stanford University and University of Notre Dame).

5.) You are all sending an Initial Transcript.

6.) If you are applying Common App your Common App must be linked to your SchooLinks account for any materials to be sent.
