Unified Encore at Northern Elementary
Just 3 years ago, NES started a program called unified PE. This pilot program began with 9 grade 5 students, and the autism support classroom. The following year the program doubled in size with 20 grade 5 students signing up to participate. This year we hit another amazing milestone with nearly 30 grade 5 students and the growth of unified PE into 2 additional encore classes. With the support of Miss Carlson, Mrs. Barrick, Mrs. Moore, Miss Rowand and all support staff, NES students have been able to provide a unique inclusive experience to our self-contained classroom. The unified program quickly grew into something much bigger and more beautiful than we could have planned.
During this experience, grade 5 students volunteer to come into either PE, Health, Library and Discovery during their recess time. They spend time in the autism support classroom running small groups, demonstrating motions, engaging, and INCLUDING!
Grade 5 leaders were also responsible for teacher inclusive lessons to the student body. They created a presentation to cover their topic and passed around informational or engaging handouts when their presentation was played. One student leader took it upon herself to request that each student receive a small fidget during their ADHD presentation. Student presentations are linked below.
We are so proud of the leadership and inclusion these students have shown. If you would like to start your own unified program but aren't sure where to begin, please reach out!

Mastering Multiplication - A Third Grade Celebration
Third-grade students recently celebrated a major milestone—mastering their multiplication tables—with a well-earned ice cream party! They were joined by our math coach, Connie Bleiler, along with Math Max, adding to the excitement of the occasion.
Students enjoyed vanilla ice cream with a selection of toppings, including hot fudge, sprinkles, and whipped cream. While they savored their treats, they also took on a fun math challenge: figuring out just how many different topping combinations were possible. This sparked great discussion and showed that even during celebrations, our students are thinking critically and applying their math skills.
In third grade, learning never stops—we are always growing, exploring, and making connections in math. A special thank you to our wonderful teachers, Miss Corbett and Mrs. McSherry, for consistently making math engaging and meaningful for our students!

Through hard work, thoughtful research, calculated risk-taking, and a desire to make money up until the very end, seniors Ewan Clark and Noah Seidel - better known by their team name: $uper Money Bro$, placed 7th in the state-wide high school division and first in York County with $132,499.99. Building for Those Who Served
Each year, the USDA hosts a special hunt for disabled veterans on the Lancaster/Lebanon Landfill property, providing hunting tags, blinds, and on‑site assistance to support the veterans throughout the experience. This year, the USDA approached NHS Tech Ed teacher Troy Summey to see if his students would be interested in building a new hunting blind for the event.
The project began in January after materials were generously donated by ReMod Squad. Students completed every phase of construction—from framing to roofing—gaining hands‑on experience while contributing to a meaningful cause. The finished blind offers veterans a spacious, comfortable, and heat‑ready environment to enjoy their hunt.
It was an honor for our students to support the men and women who have sacrificed so much in defense of our freedoms, and we are proud to play a small role in giving back to those who have served.
Pictured below are participants in the recent Ag Building and Construction class project. From left to right: Jordan from the Lancaster Landfill; students Preston Brightbill and Brady Mitchell; and Zack Bair from the USDA.

The Addams Family's Final Performance
Several cast members of The Addams Family musical recently attended ENCORE - a showcase for York County Musicals, held at the Pullo Center at Penn State York. The students had 8 minutes to highlight two songs from the show in front of a packed audience of fellow student performers from 16 other York County High School productions. This was the first time Northern has participated in ENCORE, which has been recognizing high school theater talent since 2008. Our Northern students wowed the audience and judges who were impressed with their fun characters and enthusiastic performance. Northern students also joined nearly 100 others on stage for a Finale featuring songs from Mamma Mia! In addition to performing, Avery Lusk (Gomez) received Northern's "Director's Award" given for Outstanding Performance or Outstanding Contribution to the Production. Avary Falck (Morticia) was one of six seniors from across the county selected to receive a scholarship based on her academic achievement, community service, and participation in the performing arts.
