☕ Supporting Your Child From Home: Coffee Chat Follow-Up
Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for our recent Digital Learning Principal Coffee Chat! Your engagement and thoughtful questions regarding technology in your child's education are incredibly valuable to us. It was wonderful connecting with you all and sharing information on how we are leveraging different tools in the classroom. Below is the video recording and slides along with some additional support for navigating Google Classroom. These are also found on our school website.
Google Classroom Guardian Notifications
We heard from many families during the chat that navigating Google Classroom and understanding its features is a common area where support is needed. We want to ensure everyone feels confident supporting their child's digital learning experience so below are some highlights of how you can support with Google Classroom.
Receiving Google Classroom Summaries
Google Classroom Guardian Summaries are an excellent way to stay informed about your child's progress. These summaries include information on:
Missing work
Upcoming assignments
Class announcements
If you are currently NOT receiving these important email summaries for your child's classrooms, please use the form below to submit your information, and we will work to resend the Guardian invitations to the email address we have on file for you.
Quick Tips for Supporting Google Classroom at Home
Here are a few tips to help you and your student navigate Google Classroom:
Set a Check-In Routine: Ask your child to show you their Google Classroom dashboard and "To-Do" list at least once a week. This helps them manage upcoming and missing assignments.
- Use Google Calendar as a Digital Planner: Students can use their school Google Calendar to see all their class assignments (which automatically populate from Google Classroom) and then add personal "events" or "tasks" for study time, homework blocks, or reminders for big projects.
- Encourage Self-Advocacy: If your child is struggling with an assignment or finding a resource, encourage them to initiate an email to their teacher and CC you.

Digital Learning Day for BHMS Students was a Success!
8th Grade Science/Trees Atlanta/Legacy Park
8th Grade students and parents stepped outside for a meaningful service learning project with Trees Atlanta! About 30 amazing participants joined an educational walk to learn all about the Legacy Park ecosystem. We connected our classroom learning on stream chemistry directly to real-world issues like local water quality and the preservation of native habitats. 💧🌿
After our enriching walk, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work! Students and parents worked together to remove invasive species from the forest, clearing the way for future native tree plantings. This is a powerful step towards a healthier environment!
A huge thank you to Mr. Bauer for organizing, to Ms. Glenn for supporting this important effort, and to Trees Atlanta for the partnership. It was a wonderful way to spend the morning connecting learning to service.
Ballots & Beyond: A 6th Grade Civic Activity
Digital Learning was a balance of non-digital and digital activities! It was a civic engagement kind of day for Digital Learning Day for Ms. Coyles' I&S classes! As part of BHMS Digital Day, Mrs. Coyle’s students were encouraged to visit the poles with their parents and snap a selfie to celebrate civic engagement in action!
A big thank you to our parents and families for supporting this initiative and helping build future voters.

Gratitude Reading; Changing the Tone
November is a natural time to slow down, reflect, and express gratitude, and yes, reading can play a part in that. For students who feel disconnected from reading, gratitude journaling through literature can shift mindset from “I have to” to “I get to.”
Try This 10-Minute Gratitude Reading Routine
Have your child pick a short article, poem, or story.
After reading, ask: “What idea or quote are you thankful you read today?”
Write that line on a sticky note and post it where they’ll see it daily.
Extend It
Over the month, collect their “gratitude notes” in a jar or on a wall. Revisit them before Thanksgiving to reflect on what they’ve learned or how their thinking has grown.
This simple act reframes reading as reflection, not a requirement, and helps students see how words can shape perspective.
When gratitude meets literacy, comprehension deepens. They begin reading not just to get through it, but to get something from it.

District News
On October 30, Education Planners sent an update about the K-2 School Consolidation and Redistricting Process to the community. The letter is copied below:
"Based on the input received, Education Planners recommends that the City Schools of Decatur proceed with a community-based process to explore additional solutions before the Board of Education makes a final decision. This updated approach will be presented to the school board at the November 11 meeting.
Our recommendation is that four committees guide this next phase:
- Facilities & Finance – enrollment, costs, and capital planning
- Student Experience – instructional programs, transitions, and early-learning access
- Safety & Operations – traffic, walkability, and daily operations
- Culture & Communication – transparency and ongoing engagement
Community members are invited to participate in one of the committees by clicking this link: K-2 School Consolidation Committee Sign Up."
