2. What is the MSAA and Who Takes It?
MSAA (Multi-State Alternate Assessment) is a statewide assessment designed for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities who are eligible for alternate assessments.
MSAA measures student achievement on academic content that is aligned to Arizona's academic standards. The assessment allows students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills using supports and materials that are familiar to them whenever appropriate.
The assessment is designed to promote meaningful participation and provide opportunities for students to show what they know and can do as independently as possible.
Who Takes MSAA?
Students participate in MSAA if:
- They have a significant cognitive disability.
- Their Individualized Education Program (IEP) team has determined they are eligible for alternate assessments.
- They receive instruction aligned with alternate academic achievement standards.
Eligibility for alternate assessments is determined annually by the student's IEP team.
What Subjects Are Tested?
The MSAA is administered in:
English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics
- Grades 3–8
- Grade 11
Science
- Grades 5, 8, and 11
How Does MSAA Support Students?
MSAA includes built-in accessibility features and supports that help students participate in the assessment.
These supports may include:
- Familiar testing materials and formats
- Multiple ways for students to communicate responses
- Accommodations identified by the student's IEP
- Opportunities for students to demonstrate learning as independently as possible
The goal is to provide students with an assessment experience that reflects their knowledge and skills while meeting their unique learning needs.
3. Why Is MSAA Assessment Important?
MSAA helps educators:
- Measure student progress toward Arizona academic standards.
- Identify strengths and areas for growth.
- Support instructional planning.
- Ensure students with significant cognitive disabilities have meaningful access to statewide assessments.
The assessment is part of Arizona's commitment to providing high-quality educational opportunities for all students and preparing them for future success.
